It was a hot and busy day for most students, especially when it's their last year as senior classmen. Stalls were up and a stage was being prepared in the hall, prior to a concert in the evening.
Éclair watched as a crowd poured through the school's gate. She thought she'd take a short break and look around the other stalls. Despite being dressed in a bartender get-up, she did make a few heads turn.
"I'm back! Here's your ice cream," Trevor said, handing over a vanilla ice cream cone to her. He seemed nervous for some reason.
"You didn't get one for yourself?" she asked.
"I thought the maid outfit looked great on you. Who'd have thought you could pull this one off too. You look good in anything don't you?"
He looked softly at her and watched her as she ate the dessert.
"I'm not sharing this, Trevor!"
He smiled and inched closer to her face as her lips touched the dessert. Éclair froze and flushed. No words came as her green eyes captured the boy's close-up face in front of her. Trevor pulled away and backed away slowly while still facing her.
"Gotta go now," he grinned. "I'll be singing later in the hall, hope to see you there."
After awhile, he stopped and added,"The song's for you, Éclair. So... I really hope you'd come."
- In the evening -
The hall was already crowded when Éclair got there. Some were standing while others sat around the floor. Familiar faces littered the place as lights flickered in rhythm.
An MC took to the stage, soliciting cheers aloud as the crowd thrived. Éclair found a spot not far from the stage, among some people she knew.
She looked on earnestly at the stage as the next performance began. She was eager to catch Trevor as she never heard him sing before.
The crowd roared as a familiar boy came on and turned the heat up. As he sang to the crowd, Éclair followed every word and meaning that came out. For that brief moment, she felt swept away while their eyes met. It felt like that moment not too long ago, earlier that day.
The beat and lyrics resonated in her still as the music faded. The crowd roared again, bringing her back on her feet.
"What's the title of the song?" asked someone nearby.
"It's called 'Just The Way You Are' by Bruno Mars!"
Éclair breathed deeply and turned to make her way to the backstage but a hand grabbed hers and she spun round.
"Trevor!"
The boy pulled her away and they ran from the screaming crowd to the rooftop, where no one would reach them briefly. Below them, students were lighting up towers of bonfires beneath the purple skies.
"Éclair, I er..." he stammered between short breaths, placing one hand at the back of his head.
"I've liked you... for a long time now actually. I...can't find another way to tell you this... so I thought I'd...I thought I'd sing it to you!"
There was silence. He swallowed.
"Would you...want to go out with me, Éclair?"
