Chapter 3 – A Million Thoughts

Olivia started laughing as soon as she shut the door. The look on Billy's face was priceless.

"What exactly did you do to him in there?" Fitz asked.

Olivia whipped around and came face to face with President Grant. "Nothing, I just had a little bit of fun."

He smiled. "Do you mind if we talk for a moment?"

"Sure," she said returning it.

Fitz led them through a hallway and then into the rose garden which is still a beautiful sight at night.

"It's quite lovely out here."

His gaze never left her. "Yes, it is."

She tried to ignore his subtle innuendo, but every time he brushed against her arm she held her breath.

"Tell me about yourself, Ms. Pope."

She held his gaze. "What do you want to know?"

He smiled. "I suppose I could go inside and have my secretary google you, but what fun would that be?"

"I'm surprised you know about Google."

"Well, Al Gore did invent the internet."

"Are you saying you invented Google?" she asked giving him a look.

"Are we off the record?" He leaned closer.

She momentarily held her breath. "Are you flirting with me, Mr. President?"

"Fitz," he said firmly.

"What?"

"Please, call me Fitz."

She backed up a step. "That would be highly inappropriate."

"What are you two doing out here?" Cyrus said walking towards them.

Olivia quickly composed herself and greeted him with a smile. "Oh, we're just getting some air. It got a little stuffy in there."

"How did it go?"

"Mellie was lovely," she said smirking.

Cyrus laughed. "I'm sure she was. Listen, there's a gala this weekend. It's actually a fundraiser. Would you like to go with?"

Olivia raised her eyebrows. "Are you asking me?"

Cyrus laughed. "Yes. My husband is out of town and I would love it if you would accompany me."

She smiled. "Of course, I would love to." It will give them a chance to reconnect further.

"Great, I'll pick you up Friday night at 7:30 P.M."

"Sounds good. Well, I better get back to my office."

"It was nice seeing you again, Ms. Pope," Fitz said.

"Likewise."

Cyrus watched her walk away and then turned back towards the president. "Were you flirting with her when I came out here?"

"Maybe," Fitz said.

"Are you crazy?"

"Maybe."

"Would you stop saying that. You're already in a shit load of trouble and you're making eyes at the first woman—"

"She's not just any woman Cyrus, and you know it."

He shook his head. "Look, don't mess with her head okay. She is beyond too good for you."

"What is that suppose to mean?" Fitz asked glaring at him.

"You know exactly what I mean. She is off limits," Cyrus said firmly.

"Yes, dad."

Cyrus glared as the President grinned at him. There is no way the President has any intention of leaving Olivia alone. He is on a mission.

Olivia entered the lobby of her office holding her computer and purse.

"Boss, I have something for you to see," Huck yelled from within the war room.

She followed the sound of his voice and looked at the screen on the wall as she entered.

"This is from two nights ago. It's surveillance video from Billy's apartment building."

The video showed Billy kissing a man goodbye and then turning to go back into his building.

"Okay, not much shocks me, but I was not expecting that," Abby said as she joined them.

Olivia eased onto a chair. "She's lying. It was all staged and she knows that he is gay and is blackmailing him. There is no way that Sally Langston would ever stand for that with her high moral code. She is everything to Billy and Mellie knows that if this is reported by the press, it will destroy Sally and she used that against him."

"That's freaking brilliant, but kind of scary," Stephen said under his breath.

"What are you going to do?" Abby asked.

Olivia tapped her pen on the table. "Nothing to him."

They stared at her blankly.

"Stephen and Abby, I need you to try to get some information from the First Lady's aides. She's clearly seeing someone else that she doesn't want the President to know about."

They left the room.

"Harrison, we need you to think like Mellie. Where would she meet this person? What is she willing to risk? I taped my meeting with her and Billy this afternoon. Listen to it and see if you get anything."

She went out in the hallway with Huck and whispered instructions to him before returning to get her things.

"What about me?" Quinn asked eagerly.

Huck appeared and handed Olivia a piece of paper.

"Come with me," she said as she grabbed her keys and purse and headed for the elevator.

Olivia parked her car and headed into See's candy.

"Why are we going here?" Quinn asked.

"You'll see."

She bought a pound of chocolate candy and then they got back into the car.

Quinn lifted the cover of the candy but Olivia smacked her hands making her jump and then smile.

They drove for a half hour outside D.C. before Olivia pulled into a nursing home and turned the car off.

"Are you going to tell me what we're doing here?"

Olivia turned to her and smiled. "I watched an interview with the First Lady last week. She mentioned her mother and how she didn't always recognize her, but that she visited her often. She also said that her mother is addicted to chocolate covered cherries."

Quinn smiled. "Brilliant."

They hopped out of the car and went inside.

"May I help you?"

"Yes, I'm here to see Millicent Agnes Barnes please," Olivia said.

"Your name?"

"Candace Williamson."

The nurse checked her computer and then looked at Olivia and smiled. "She's out on the porch in the back."

"Thanks!"

Quinn whispered. "How did you do that?"

"Huck."

She approached a lady on the porch and said, "Millicent?"

The older woman turned and smiled.

"I have something for you."

When Millicent spotted the candy, her eyes grew wide and then she held her hands out and Olivia gave her the box.

"I'm friends with Mellie."

Millicent looked at her blankly for a moment and then smiled. "My Mellie?"

Olivia smiled and nodded. "How is Mellie?"

"Oh, she's fine. She just came to visit me the other day. She's going to have a baby you know," she said excitedly.

Olivia tried to hide her shock. "Really?"

"Oh yes, I'm gonna be a grandma and I can't wait."

"Did she say who the father was?"

Millicent seemed confused. "The President, of course."

"Of course."

A nurse came by. "Millicent, it's time for your medicine."

Olivia observed as the nurse pushed her away and then turned towards Quinn.

"You don't think Mellie is pregnant, do you?" Quinn asked.

A million thoughts are running through Olivia's head and none of them are good.
