"More souls" spoke the pre-kishin in a gruff voice as it had just finished feasting on another innocent victim's soul.

Pulling its lance from the victim's body, its hungry eyes darted in all directions, searching for more prey.

This particular pre-kishin had been lurking the streets of Germany's rural areas at night for some time now. It looked human, that is if you didn't count the grotesque demon arm it had in place of a human arm. As a result, many people feared leaving their homes once the sun had set, lest they be eaten.

"Demon knight of Ostrheinsburg" spoke a boy as he sat atop the roof of a small building; a girl stood by his side.

The pre-kishin craned his head at the two who dared approach it.

"Frederick Schtauffen…..Your soul is mine" finished the boy with a grin as he jumped down from his perch.

The pre-kishin grew angry at this declaration, and readied its lance.

The girl, still on the roof, jumped down and began glow brightly. Holding out his hand, the boy caught the girl, who had now become a sword and assumed a stance.

Roaring in pure bloodlust, the evil soul charged at the boy, lance at the ready. The boy jumped quickly out of the way as the demon obliterated the building behind where the boy had been standing previously.

Still in the air, the boy front flipped over the pre-kishin, slashing at it in the process. The pre-kishin saw the attack and guarded with its deformed arm as the boy landed behind it.

"Hardened skin eh? That's not gunna be enough!" yelled the boy as he charged again.

The monster kept the boy at a distance with its lance until the boy found an opening and exploited it as he closed the distance, knocking the lance out of the creature's hand. Before he could strike, the boy was caught by the neck with the monster's misshapen arm and raised him in the air.

"Nightmare…"uttered the creature viciously as he began to strangle the life out of the boy. Its mouth began to water at the thought of the meal to come until it felt something embed itself within his chest.

Looking down in confusion, it noticed the girl had left the boy's hand as her arm, half-transformed, was elbow deep in its chest.

"You're fighting two people remember?" said the girl as the pre-kishin burst into a floating red orb.

The girl took the orb and swallowed it whole; sighing in content at her meal.

"That makes it #15 Varro" smiled the girl

A few weeks had passed since the duo's duel with the senior, Jason. Apparently, he was one of the popular students who were always known for bullying lower-classmen and his natural strength. As a result of the fight, Varro and June had become idols of some sort in the eyes their fellow lower-classmen for standing up to the beast.

As Varro walked down the halls of the DWMA, he was met with cheers and high-fives as fellow classmates greeted him enthusiastically.

"Hey, Varro! What's up?"

"How's it goin Varro?"

"Good morning Varro!"

"Varro Marek! Mah nigga!"

Varro returned each with a smile and a wave, although he wasn't sure how to respond to the last one. Reaching his seat in homeroom, he looked around for any sign of June.

Weird, she's usually here before me.

The bell rang before he could dwell on it any further. "Alright everyone, in your seats, let's get started". The teacher began to jot down the day's notes as he began his lecture.

Varro looked back to the vacant seat next to him. It felt weird sitting in class without her diligently scribbling down notes next to him.

By the time the class was already half-finished; a knock came to the door, and was opened by the person in question.

"Ah, Ms. Kento, how nice of you to join us" greeted the teacher with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.

"Sorry I'm late sir" replied June hastily, already making her way to her seat and plopping down next to Varro without a word. Her clothes had scuff marks everywhere; dirt and grass stains covered her jeans. Once the teacher continued his lecture, Varro leaned in to whisper to June. "Hey, you alright? You look like you just trekked through a forest" asked Varro genuinely concerned.

"Oh it nothing, I tripped on the sidewalk on my way here" June joked, gesturing to her cheek.

Varro cocked an eyebrow, obviously not buying it.

June started sweat bullets at the sight of the look he was giving her.

"Alright..." said Varro, turning his attention back to the teacher

She'll tell me when she's ready

June let out a breath of relief.

"Attention class! Come up when I call your name to receive your test scores from last week's biology test" announced the teacher.

"Ughhh, I probably did horrible on that" groaned June slamming her head on the desk.

Once everyone had received their tests, June looked disappointedly at hers.

"Oh man, a 75? What'd you get Varro?"

"90"

"What?" yelled June. Snatching up his test, her eyes slowly widened in shock.

"THAT'S HORSE-SHIT! YOU DIDN'T EVEN STUDY!"

After class had ended, the two began to make their way to the outside practice area for their next class, 'Resonance training 101'. The practice area was located outside, behind the school, and was complete with a track, field, and various obstacle courses. Since the area was so big, it was used by multiple classes at once.

Maneuvering around the other classes practicing also on the field, the pair walked together where a teacher stood in a sweat suit with a whistle around his neck; a group of students sat together in front of him.

"Good morning Mr. Forza" greeted June

"Sup teach" added Varro informally

"Good morning June! Varro! Go ahead a take a seat with the others" as Mr. Forza gestured to the group of students in front of him.

Once everyone had arrived, He began his lecture. "Alright everyone pipe down!" as Mr. Forza signaled everyone to stop talking. "Same drill as yesterday, you'll be attempting to achieve resonance with your partner" All eyes were on the teacher.

"Since some of you have seemed to have trouble achieving resonance, how about a demonstration?"

Mr. Forza looked over his shoulder to one of the other classes. "Franken Stien! Spirit Albarn! I need to borrow you!"

From across the field, Varro and June could see two of the students the teacher had called over turn and begin walking over.

"Class, you're looking at one of this year's most promising miesters to graduate this year" as he gestured to Stien.

The student Mr. Forza called Stien stood there looking as bored as can be. He wore the school uniform but it was obvious he made changes to it since it was riddled with stitches everywhere. Varro stared at Stien oddly as he scanned across the group of students but as soon as eyes rested on Varro, Varro saw his eyes widen a bit as he stared back. Varro felt compelled to look away, but he couldn't. It was almost as if this Stien guy was looking right into his soul.

"Hey Mr. Forza! Don't I get a mention?" complained the other student that came with Stien

"…..Hm, did you say something Spirit?"

The student, 'Spirit', stood shocked with his mouth open before hanging his head in defeat.

"Anyway, please demonstrate for the class, Soul Resonance"

The senior student, Stien, continued to stare at Varro before looking to his partner, holding out his hand expectantly. Spirit without any response, began to transform in Stien's hand and assumed a scythe form. Spirit's scythe form was surprising simple; it looked like just a regular scythe. The shaft was a deep shade of brown, it almost looked like wood, and the blade had no design on it; just plain.

A creepy little smile spread across Stien's face, "Soul Resonance…" and at once, the blade grew instantly into a jagged and ruthless-looking shape; it looked as if it had stitches running across it.

"Your weapon reflects and intensifies your soul wavelength during resonance, increasing the power of both you and your weapon. The stronger the resonance rate, the stronger you both become." Lectured Mr. Forza. "Each weapon is unique; therefore, your abilities will be unique as well. It's up to you and you're your partner to develop these abilities".

"Thank you, you can return to your class now" Mr. Forza dismissed the two and they began to walk away; Stien giving one last look to Varro before moving on.

"Alright, let's give it a try people! Try to reach out and feel each other's soul" commanded Mr. Forza.

Transforming in his hands, June felt for Varro's soul as he did for hers.

As June searched Varro's soul, she wasn't surprised to what she found. It was kind of hard to miss a soul like his, as it burned bright like the sun within the darkness of her mind's eye. As she got closer, she felt warm feelings engulf her, and she stood there in basking in its warmth.

"This is….his soul" June held out a hand over Varro's soul, feeling herself mold and become a part of it.

Within his mind's eye, he felt a presence connect to his own.

There you are June

A small soul pulsed gently through the darkness of his mind. When he focused on it, he felt….pride. She was proud to be his partner. Varro smiled at the thought.

What else…?

Varro tightened his brow further in concentration, and found something out of the ordinary. A small irregularity within June's soul…shame? At who?

As he got closer, he felt the resonance begin to slip and felt a small jolt go through his body, making him jump. Varro looked at June through the blade's reflection. June tilted her head to the side, crossing her arms, unable to make eye contact.

Walking back home, June wondered what Varro felt during their soul resonance attempt. She knew it bothered him because for one: he still would keep giving her this weird look.

I'll have to tell him eventually

June snapped out of her reverie when she realized they reached the corner where they parted ways.

"Well, I'll see you tomorrow June" said Varro with a smile.

"Yeah…"

Feeling depressed at not being able to share with her partner, June began to walk in the opposite direction.

Curiosity eating away at Varro, he decided to follow June home, without her consent of course.

As she rounded the corner, Varro stealthily ran up to the corner and pressed his back to the wall.

He traced her shadow as it moved slowly up the street until it came to an abrupt halt. Hoping he hadn't been spotted, Varro stayed absolutely still.

"Nice to see you again, brat"

Ears perking at the sound of the unknown voice, Varro poked his head out slowly to see the same three gang members he'd beaten up a week ago plus 7 more, block June's path.

"When Big Boss told us some girl owed money to the gang, I was surprised to find out it was the same brat that bumped into us a week ago" said the head thug with a smug smile "What luck huh?"

"I'm sure then that your Boss has told you that I'd have the money soon, I just need more time"

"Oh you don't need to worry about that anymore" The thugs began to close in. "The boss is done waiting. We're just here to collect, whether you have it or not."

June took a step back. "Back off! I'm warning you!" transforming her arm into her blade.

"Heh, how much do you think you can accomplish without a miester?"

June stood her ground.

This only seemed to annoy the gangster

"Work her over fellas"

The thugs began to pull out their short-hand axes from inside their coats.

"June!" Varro came out of his hiding place.

June looked back surprised "Varro get out of here!"

"Like hell I will, we're partners remember?" said Varro sternly as he reached her side. "Now hurry and transform!"

June stood there for a moment smiling inwardly as she began to fully transform.

"So you're her miester huh?" said the thug leader as Varro assumed a stance.

"Get him!" he commanded as the others rushed forward.

The first one to reach Varro brought his axe down upon him only to miss and end up with a deep gash on his side

1 down…

Three more came rushing toward him in unison and Varro rushed into them, coming out unscathed as the three fell, from mortal wounds.

4 down…

Another came right after the three fell and began to swing his axe wildly. He slashed left, but missed and paid for it as Varro countered with a backhand from with his left followed up by his sword as it slashed at the thug's neck, spilling his blood all over the pavement.

5 down…

Another fell after having his knee caved in from a kick and another kick to the head, sending him crashing into a nearby fire hydrant.

6 down…

One thug attempted to throw his axe but Varro simply caught it and threw it back, lodging it into the thug's head

7 down…

Two thugs attacked as a pair, blocking and attacked for each other. Varro waited for an opportunity and parried one of the two's attack's, sending his axe into his partner's face; scratching it. As the thug clutched the wound on his face, Varro kicked the other into a nearby lamppost and slashed him across the chest.

As soon he to turn to face the other, Varro was caught in a bear hug and lifted off the ground by the thug leader that had been standing back the whole time.

"Agh, get off me dammit!"

The leader called out to the thug Varro cut across the face. "Get him now while I'm still holding him!"

Hearing this, Varro struggled even harder, closing his eyes from the strain of the thug's vice grip.

"Heh, its useless kid! "said Varro's captor victoriously. As the thug was about to gloat some more, he noticed the boy's weapon to glow a faint blue, and the boy himself was beginning to vibrate a bit within his grip. Before he could react, he found himself suddenly feeling in free fall before crashing through a window.

9 down…

Confused, Varro turned his head to look for his captor but was astonished to find him stuck in the window of a building three floors up. Before he could dwell upon it, Varro twisted his head back to face the last thug, only to find him missing. Varro felt his face curl into an angry scowl.

He got away...

Letting the adrenaline leave his system, Varro stood there in the midst of the carnage for a moment before tossing June in the air as she transformed back into human form. June looked to Varro. He crossed his arms and stood there silent, waiting for an explanation.

Looking guilty, June took a deep breath.

"I can explain..."
