Chapter 2- Lost World
The World of the League of Legends. Her words echoed in my head as I realized where I really was. I had not only been transported to another world. I had been summoned to a world that I knew very well about. I suddenly remembered the hundreds of hours spent on my computer- by day, at night, even nights before exams. Now it was clear to me that the game that I had played so often was not just entertainment. It was a real world- a real world!
I was curious with a burning question that I wished to ask. "Why am I here, and why have I been summoned?" I questioned her. You are the Ultima. The immortal guardian of balance that is supposedly summoned from another world to preserve the current workings of our realm and to prevent the entropy from breaking down our lives into chaos. Let me tell you a tale from long ago…
Thousands of years ago, the people of Runeterra were battling. They had primitive weapons, even so, the battles killed thousands upon thousands. The two main rivals, Noxus and Demacia, fought in the name of patriotism and for power. Eventually, the losses were mounted so high that even the Grand Commands of both empires sought peace. The League of Legends was formed for this purpose, to allow battles in a closed manner without harming the innocent majority. I am one such participator- a champion. However, just a few years ago, a shocking discovery was made by the Archmages and High Summoners- that the high amount of magic use was accelerating the entropy rate of our universe. At this rate, we will soon have a lifeless and barren world within less than a decade. That is why you are here. The League has calculated that you alone are capable of reversing the trend and slowing down the rate of entropy. You alone are the one who will save us.
I felt the burden of the message come down upon me. I was the only one who could help prevent disaster in an entire world. And yet I felt so sad. Perhaps it was both the pressure of the task, and the loneliness that compounded it.
Immortal sighed as the plight of Sona's world was described to him. It all became too clear to him now, suddenly, as he finally understood. The anomalies of his childhood, detracting averageness from his otherwise quite ordinary childhood, came to light. His magical abilities had begun to express themselves early on in mundane, nearly unnoticeable ways. But instead of understanding himself further, he only felt as if he was pressured, not only by the need to return home but also to preserve the being of the world in a way that he did not even know of.
Sona looked down sadly at the young man, whose journey to her world had been so long. So young to be forced to shoulder such responsibility- he must miss his world very much, she thought. Her thoughts were proven to be correct when Immortal asked "Will I be able to return home someday?" She sighed and shook her head no, removing the light from his face. It was the unfortunate truth.
The magic crystal began to energize itself even further as the portal opened every wider, harnessing every last unit of force as the portal began to summon the beginning of the warp process. As the figure being summoned slowly materialized in the new world, the crystal itself began to overflow with power. When the figure was finally fully teleported, the crystal itself, the only one that could be created to open such portals, began to collapse on itself before becoming an inert particle of mass. Now useless, it shriveled away from the lack of magic and disappeared. The link to the other world was gone.
Trapped forever in the unknown world, he was told. Well, not forever, he reminded himself. Unlike normal humans, he would be able to live for the three thousand years for the mineral to be mined and resurrect the portal creator. He was a near god, he reminded himself, still somewhat doubting Sona's assurance of his form. But he wasn't sure if he wanted to return after so long.
Sona delicately placed one of her hands upon his shoulder before embracing him. The sun began to set slowly off in the distance, a ball of fire being tamed to a mere torch. They parted before Sona smiled at the now revigorated youth next to her. She spoke to him through the telepathic connection that was now between the two of them. Tomorrow we will set off for the Institute of War.
