Chapter Two

Jim watched the beautiful, mysterious girl disappear into the section reserved for first class as he followed his family into the section reserved for third class. Of course he had no chance with her, so he put her out of his mind, for now.

Jim followed his family to their stateroom; a small room with two bunk beds and two small dressers at the end of each bed. The twins immediately raced in and claimed the top bunks. Sinbad and Marina took the right bottom bunk and Jim took the left bottom bunk, flinging his pack onto the bed. He left the room, explaining to his surrogate mother and father that he was going to explore the ship.

He was walking down a hallway of the F Deck when two small blurs bumped and ran past him. Jim was about to shout when he heard, "Come back you little brats!" Jim looked behind him as he saw another blur bump into him, the person tripping and falling hard to the ground. Jim quickly bended over and helped them up.

"Hey, you alright?" The person nodded their head.

"Yeah, sorry about that. Shanti, Mowgli! Get back here! By the way, I'm Aladdin. SHANTI, MOWGLI!" And Aladdin sped off as Jim stared after him, confusing upon his face.

Shrugging, Jim wandered up to the B Deck section set aside for third class passengers, the name being the Poop Deck. He leaned against the railing as he watched the sun set beyond the horizon.

Winry was sitting on a lounge chair in the parlor suite, starting into the sea. The sun was soon to set, meaning dinner will be ready in an hour, but Winry hadn't yet changed out of her day dress. Aurora walked into the room, all dressed in her light golden evening dress with white cloves reach above her elbow; her blonde hair was tied up in a fancy bun. Seeing Winry ditting idle on the lounge, Aurora sighed heavily.

"Winry, it'll be dinner soon. You should get ready."

"I'm not going tonight." Winry mumbled and sunk lower in the chair. Aurora huffed and strictly walked to her, roughly grabbed her hand, and stubbornly dragged her surprised sister to her bedroom. She closed the door and turned towards Winry, giving her a strict look.

"Winry Jessica Rockbell. My husband and I didn't pay this £870 suite for you to mope all the way to America. Now I want you to dress for dinner tonight, for you are coming." Aurora left the room as she called their handmaid.

Winry sighed, leaning against the bed pole. Her sister had the audacity to speak her full name; only parents have that privilege, not siblings. Seeing the long, auburn hair of their handmaid entering with the evening dress, Winry resigned to her fate.

Jim was on the Poop Deck for a long while. The twins managed to find him, followed by their parents. They stayed with him awhile, but soon let him be. He respected that about them. They knew when he wanted have some alone to himself. Marina came up once more to bring him some dinner, which he appreciated, since he was getting a slight chill. She stayed with him for a bit longer, before returning to the stateroom, reminding him not to stay up too late, which he promised.

Jim returned his gaze back to the sea, its surface reflecting the night sky. He would miss Ireland, but he was ready to have change in his life. Perhaps one day, when he got a job that paid decent wages, he could return. Meet a girl, marry her, and settle down, raising a family of his own. Jim shook head of the happy thoughts. He needs to first focus on what he's going to do in America first. Sighing, he looked up the twinkling stars, believing his parents are watching over him.

He heard footsteps walking towards the section his in; probably another third classer. But fate had a surprise, for he saw it was girl all dressed fancy-like, walking—no gliding towards the back of the ship. He felt the shimmer of familiarity and quietly followed her.

Winry walked silently towards the back of the ship; The Poop Deck if she remembered correctly. Honestly, she thought the name was ridiculous. Why name a deck after waste produced by every living creature? She knew the answer of course, but that didn't make the name less ridiculous.

She reached the stern of the ship and placed her arms against the railing, staring out at the sea. She briefly thought of the dinner she left. There many of people of course and everyone did the old 'meet and greet' while simultaneously trying to rub elbows with each other. Winry shook many hands and had her hand kissed many times. She wanted to blend in the background but her sister had other plans and introduced her to many friends and partners of her husband's company. She met Vanessa and Jafar Bahar, both having a sweet smile, but their eyes seemed to hold an evil glint in their eyes. The Bahars introduced their daughter, Jasmine Bahar, who introduced her fiancé, John Rolfe. Winry liked the betrothed couple better than the parents; their eyes shown honesty and their smiles were genuine. Then Vanessa introduced her brother, Gaston Barbeau, who had more of the evil in his eyes. He kissed Winry's hand and asked somewhat politely if she wished to keep him company for the rest of the dinner. She politely answered no and turned to the next people to greet. They were Lady Angelina Phantomhive and her son, Ciel Phantomhive. She heard about them from her sister and now understood why Lady Phantomhive was called Madam Red; her whole evening dress was red, including her hair and eyes. Her son was the opposite; his hair navy blue and his eyes—eye, blue. His right eye had a black patch over it. Winry remembered her sister saying something about him being in an accident, but didn't dare bring it up. It be very rude if she did. After the Phantomhive introduction, the Michaelises stepped up. Now these two were an interesting pair. The husband and wife, Sebastian Michaelis and Yuuko Michaelis both had wine red eyes. Something about them made Winry think they were supernatural and they looked at her as they did their greetings, she couldn't help but feel their eyes are staring into her soul. Then they moved on. Winry let go a breath she held, then she compose herself for more greetings. Next were John Smith and his two children, Eilonwy Smith and Cody Smith. The children greeted her then quickly moved on to Alice. John was polite and caring, talking enough to not seem rude, but always not dragging into pointless conversations. After the Smiths went to greet other people, a few more people greeted her and her family, Winry politely excused herself, and walked back to the stateroom. Upon there, she deposed of her jewelry and her gloves, freed her hair from the fancy hairdo, and made her way to the stern of the ship.

The chilled night air brought comfort to Winry; dinners and parties were always a furnace, she couldn't understand how the adults could stand that much heat. As her eyes looked upon the sea, wishing to dip into the deep, cool water, a grunted noise was made behind her and she quickly turned, holding onto the railing. She blinked her eyes as she saw the boy from earlier that day stand before her, eyes wide like hers and his mouth agape. His mouth moved a few times before words came out.

"Uh, hi."

"H-hi." The boy scratched his neck and Winry let her eyes wander around the ship. The boy then spoke again.

"Um, so… What is a first class ticket doing here in the third class section?" Winry instantly got defensive; how dare this low class question her!

"It is not your place to question my being here; be gone third class." The boy then chuckled which soon turned into a full laugh. Winry's cheeks turned red. First this boy questions her, now he laughs at her? She squared her shoulders and held her head high as she said, "Well, I don't know what's funny peasant, but you should know not to disrespect the higher classes, which are practically royalty compared to you." And at the, she brushed past him, keeping her eyes forward. But soon she stopped in her tracks. She expected to heat anger and spiteful words from him, but in fact was more laughter.

She turned around and gave him her best glare. "Why are you laughing? What do you find so funny?"

"Y-you! Hahaha, you're funny! You-ou're trying, hehe, to act all high and mighty, bu-uu-t, it's so, hehehe, snob-less!" Winry stared at him.

"How do you know I'm not being all high and mighty and snob-less?" The boys laughter soon died down and he looked into her eyes.

"Because, if you were true snob, all high and mighty first class ticket, you've slapped me, yelled for help, and have me arrested." Winry tried to speak but stuttered. She couldn't believe he saw through her. Yes, she was a bit annoyed and upset that he questioned her being there, but in all honesty she didn't care if he laughed at her. She didn't give a damn about the whole social class.

Winry soften her face and gave a small smile. "You're not like other… Um… Other people who don't…" He chuckled.

"It's ok to say it; I'm poor."

"Ah, well… You're not like other poor folks. Most would either cower or yell. But you laughed. Oh my goodness! Where are my manners? I'm Winry Jessica Rockbell." She held out her hand which the boy the boy took and shook.

"I'm James Pleiades Hawkins, but you may call me Jim. So why are you out here? Don't you have a rich party to go to or something?"

"I was at one, but those never interested me, so I came out here to enjoy the night."

"A beautiful lady like yourself, out on her own?"

"There's no rule or law that I have to be accompanied. I prefer to by myself, thank you very much."

"So I shall take my then, toodles!"

"Wait! You don't have to lea-" Then a woman's voice rang out in the night, calling Winry's name. Jim sadly smile.

"Alas, it seems it's time both of us to go. Shall we meet here tomorrow afternoon?" Winry nodded.

"Yes, we shall."

"Then I'll see you tomorrow, Winry." He turned to her, took her hand, and lightly kissed her bare knuckles, and with a smirk, walked away. Winry was shocked; she never knew a third class would have such manners… And for him to kiss her glove-less hand… It brought a warm blush to her cheeks and a soft smile to her lips, as she thought of tomorrow and the mysterious Jim Hawkins.
