The Secret Saturdays
The Seventh Saturday
Ch. 3-A New Enemy They Didn't Expect...
As they were nearing their destination the airship quickly made its descent and landed just outside the city. Once they were on the ground the family grabbed the necessary gear they would need to track down the creature in question, descended out of the craft, and enter the metropolis. While they walked down a street Doc suggested as he was scanning the area, "I'm not really getting anything. Maybe we better split up and search in different areas."
"Good idea," Drew agreed. "Splitting up might get better results. Zak and Zazia, make sure that you keep your communicators on in case you get into trouble."
"Right," the young boy replied, putting his device into his ear, his sister doing the same then taking off on her own, then he walking away with Fisk, Komodo, and Zon soaring above.
A few hours later the wielder of the Tibetan Fire Sword was down in the sewers scouring the tunnels when she heard the familiar beep coming from her communicator, meaning that a family member was trying to reach her. Answering the call she asked, "Find anything?"
"Nothing so far," the half-blind scientist informed. "But from what I've been getting there is a definite cryptid signature in the city somewhere."
"Well, at least we know we're on the right rack," the mystic surmised. "I'll check in with the kids and find out how they're coming along."
"Got it," her husband agreed, hanging up.
After hearing the line going dead the scientist called her son and daughter on a two-way link, a few seconds later the siblings had answered and their mother asking them, "Did you guys find any clues yet?"
"Hey, Mom," the salt and peppered haired boy commented. "We haven't found anything on our end so far."
"Same here on my side," the young woman reported. "I think I'm going to try another locat-"
Suddenly at that moment a noise went off behind her, in the background to the others, causing the elemental mage to stop talking and start cautiously looking around for a sign of what made the ruckus. While on her search she warned her family members, "Wait, hang on everyone. I think I may have found something but it could just be a stray cat getting skittish."
Checking her scanner to see if it was the cryptid in question she started to move out of the area when another noise came from behind her. Turning around to see what it was she coudn't find anything but a third noise rang from behind her again. Whipping back to search for the source this time around the thing that made it had made itself known. It was a young man, probably a couple of years older than her at best, with a pale white face complimented with handsome features and wearing 18-century styled clothing covered with a black cloak. The only thing that was unnerving about him was his glowing red eyes that felt like they were buring straight through her soul. Starting to get a little scared she asked him with a slight shaky voice, "Can I help you with something?"
"Why, yes," the man replied, his voice making her feeling chilled to the bone. "Yes, I think you can. I was wondering if you can tell me where I could find a beautiful young woman, such as yourself, who hold an immense amount of power that could be one of the keys to one of the greatest powers on this earth."
While he was answering the question Zazia was slowly starting to edge to the wall to her left, an attempt to make a successful escape since every alarm in her was telling the lass that this guy was seriously bad news. Hoping to keep him distracted she inquired, "And why would you want to know this?"
"Well, I was hoping to find her quickly for my employer who really wants to find that great power. So, do you know of such a person so I can locate her?" he responded, clearly seeing that she was trying to get away the mysterious gentlemen was prepared for this and began to follow her every movement, his gaze glowing even brighter.
The cryptid expert, her fear starting to rise a bit more, was starting to feel something prod in her mind a strange feeling wanting her to tell him about her abilities but she blocked it back and told him, "No, there is nobody like that I know who has that kind of strength."
"Oh, but you must," the strange person pushed. "Surely someone, like yourself, would know such an...honored being."
This time the prodding was a bit stronger, it trying all it can to force her to say that it's her. Using a stronger mental defense to fight back against it she decided to change the subject she wondered, "You said you were working for an employer. Who is it that you are looking for?"
"Ahhh, nosy aren't we?," he replied slyly. "Well, since it can't possibly be you, I guess it'll be alright to tell you if you can answer this question. Do you know who hosts the famous TV show "Weird World"?"
As soon as he asked the question the manipulator of the elements knew exactly who the evil young man was working for and knew that she had to get away from him fast. During this whole situation Drew and Zak were listening to the open line that was still on and were both getting concerned for their close relative. Needing her husband in on this the white-haired woman tapped Doc into the link so that he could hear what was going on. Wanting to know if she was alright the mother asked, "Sweetie, are you okay?
When no answer came the father asked, really getting worried, "What's happening Zazia? Is it the cryptid?"
"Doc, I don't think she's able to reply," the man's wife suggested. "She was able to speak before I called you in so I think she's alright at the moment, but there's also a male's voice so she might have run into some trouble."
The black-haired woman, hearing her parents' voices, was relieved that they were able to hear the entire conversation but was afraid that if she spoke to them the enemy would discover that her family was hearing what was going and go after them too. After a few seconds of thinking she decided to dash off around the corner and make a break for it. But when she tried to move her feet they wouldn't budge an inch. Looking down she saw that her shadow darkening and start to crawl up her legs just as the sun was sinking behind the buildings in front of her. Glancing at the man she had noticed that there was something more beastly about him than before. Taking a chance she used her device and scanned him and to her shocking discovery it showed that he was the cryptid they were looking for. While the ball of light continued to set behind the horizon the more the creature's true self began to show. When the last bit of light faded away the monster smiled evilly and hissed, "Ah, about time that aggervating thing went down. Now I can fully use my powers without having to waste precious energy. However, having to use a lot to keep my strength up I'm going to need something to restore what I had to waste."
Moving towards her the new species of vampire created a darkness that stretched out from him, covering the ground and quickly rising up trapping the woman's legs in its murky shadow. As he came closer and closer he informed his prey while baring his fangs, "I know that you are the one I am searching for. I knew it by the information that I have collected and how you fought my mental attacks. Only someone with that much power could push me away like that. Argost will be pleased to know that he will be one step closer to finding Kur."
After hearing this key piece of information the rest of the Saturdays' anxiety levels were well over the edge. Seeing the need to rescue her daugher Drew frantically said, "Someone's got to get Zazia out of there. Who's the closest to her location?"
"I am," the woman's son responded. "Me and the others can-"
"No, Zak," the boy's father interrupted. "We can't risk you getting in the crossfire as well. I'll head over and-"
"Sorry, but I've got this one," a new voice suddenly cut in, one that was very familiar to the family. "For one, you won't be able to reach her in time and two I've got dibs."
Just as the man/cryptid hybrid was about to grab the girl's arms a concussion grenade came out out of nowhere and hit him square in the chest and exploded, sending him reeling back into the opposite wall. The power of the explosive had caused his mental focus to falter and the black cement-like hold disappeared setting the mage free. The creature falling to the ground he looked up to see an older man land next to his target and say, "Sorry dude, but you been benched from the game."
The rescuer then picked up the almost victim, fired up his jetpack and took off over the rooftops to safety. As the dust cleared from the afterburners the monster slowly stood up while rubbing the area where he had gotten hit and growled, still smiling his evil grin and countered, "Just you wait. I will have something tonight. One way or another."
And there you have it! I know you've pretty much figured out who saved Zazia but it's the way I want the story to be told. Well, until next time my wonderful readers!
