Steve's P.O.V

Bucky was being shipped out in an hour so I decided to walk over to his place to tell him goodbye. The sun was just starting to climb over the horizon as I closed the front door behind me. I turned the corner and was greeted by the blinding orange gold rays of the sun. The streets were still quiet since it was early in the morning. It was peaceful, not the loud crazy noises you expected to hear when you walked down the streets. It was a nice change in pace, for me at least. Some seemed to live, thrive, off of the vibrant bustling city but not me.

I turned down another corner and finally reach the doorsteps of Bucky's apartment building. I walked up the winding steps, zig zagging back and forth before reaching the door belonging to Bucky. I knocked on the door and heard the shuffling of feet and a loud thump of a bag, or at least I assumed it was a bag I wasn't sure.

"Hey, Steve you made it." Bucky's voice rang out. I nodded my head while smiling at him and replied.

"Yeah, I wouldn't miss it for the world. You know it I'm with you till the end of the line." I said to him. Bucky grinned and clamped his hand on my shoulder. He picked up his duffle bag and slung it over his shoulder as I made room for him to step outside and lock his door.

"You ready for this Buck?" I asked, concern slightly lacing my voice. Bucky smiled at me.

"More than ready, I wanted to be over there since last fall. You know that Steve." Bucky said to me. I nodded my head. Yeah I did know that. We both wanted to be over there, making a difference, helping the cause. That was when Bucky was accepted by the army and I was rejected for the first time. However that didn't stop me from trying again to enlist.

"Be safe over there Buck." I told him. Bucky looked over to me. He knew that he was the only family that I had left. I didn't want to lose him too. He swung his arm over my shoulder and grinned at me.

"You know I will be. I still need to find you a date." Bucky teased me. I shoved him off as we continued our way out of his apartment building and down to the loading docks. I wasn't the only one saying goodbye to my best friend. People were saying goodbye to brothers, sons, fathers, cousins, grandsons, uncles, nephews, and friends. I tried to keep a stiff upper lip about it but once I got home I cried like a baby. I would miss my best friend. I wouldn't know where he was going, what he was doing, what was going to happen to him. But I had little time to think about that. I had to get ready for Dr. Erskine.

Serena's P.O.V

"Howard, are you ready?" I shouted out for the fifth time. I rolled my eyes at his tardiness. Dr. Erskine was already at the training camp with Peggy. Jarvis would be driving Howard and I to the basic training camp.

"Almost," he shouted out. I couldn't help but roll my eyes once more.

"You said that the last four times I asked." I shouted. I was pacing back and forth. I was already late and Howard was not helping the matter whatsoever. The Colonel would not be pleased with are tardiness. And frankly neither was I, but it wasn't my fault that Howard was always running late.

"Mr. Jarvis you really need to work on his punctuality." Mr. Jarvis nodded his head in agreement but I wasn't the one that had to live him so I guess that was something that I should've been happy about, but for the last few weeks I did have to live with him and it set me back. I finally gave up pacing back and forth on the marble floors and sat down on the chaise in the living room. Mr. Jarvis shook his head.

"I do wish that you had left with Ms. Carter and Dr. Erskine." Mr. Jarvis said to me. I shook my head.

"It's my job to make sure that Howard arrived to Camp Lehigh safely and on time. Obviously the latter isn't going to happen today." I said as I leaned back on the chaise. I started rubbing my temples. The stress was starting to get to me.

"Howard, if you don't get your arse in here this instant I'm leaving with Mr. Jarvis and you can deal with the Senator later." I threatened. Mr. Jarvis couldn't help to suppress the smile that formed at my words on his face. I smirked at Mr. Jarvis.

Five seconds later Howard came stumbling through the foyer. I sat up instantly at the sound of Howard stomping to the room. I looked him up and down, rolled my eyes, fixed his tie and placed his hat on his head after throwing his coat in his face.

"You've made us very late Howard. He will not be happy about this." I said as I walked over to the open door and stepped out to the front driveway. Mr. Jarvis and Howard followed in suit and then Mr. Jarvis helped Howard and I get into the car before driving us off to Camp Lehigh. Sadly the whole ride there Howard and I were bickering. But that was nothing too new for us. We did it almost every single time we were close to each other. I could hear Mr. Jarvis sigh under his breath. I felt bad for him. The poor man had to put up with this hooligan day after day.

"Well it's about damn time. You're late Agent." I saluted the Colonel and held my tongue. I wasn't about to screw myself over by trying to make excuses to him because I knew it would do nothing for me in the long run.

"I know sir, I apologize for our tardiness. It was my fault." I said with a straight face, looking the Colonel right in the eye. Howard must have overheard us because the next thing I know he's standing next to me, in his usual manner, telling the Colonel that it was his fault not mine that we were late. I felt anger boiling inside of me. The one time that I wish that Howard would just shut up would be now. The man, as charming as he might be, could be a total annoying prick. And smart as he is he really was stupid at times.

"I don't care Stark. Agent Dover was in charge of getting you here on time and she failed. End of discussion." I held my tongue once more and didn't move for a moment after the Colonel left. Once the Colonel was gone I left my ridged stance and started walking over to the Bunker where everyone that was working with Howard would be.

"Serena I'm sorry. I didn't know-" I snapped at Howard.

"Of course you didn't know. You never listen. I'm amazed with how much Mr. Jarvis can tolerate you. You don't deserve him. It's a wonder that he's stuck around with you this long." I spat out to him. He looked like he was slightly wounded by my words but I just rolled my eyes at him and dismissed him so he could get to work.

"Dover!" I heard my name being shouted. I turned instantly and saw the Colonel glaring at me. I knew that instant that he wanted me to follow him and so I did. No questions were to be asked as I knew it would push him over the edge.

"Yes sir?" I said the moment I was within hearing range. He looked up from the manila folder his was holding and motioned for me to follow him. I obliged and walked about four paces behind him. Soon I realized that I was being led to him office. I did not have a good feeling about what was to come next.

"You're not in trouble with Stark, Dover." Colonel Phillips said. I let out a silent sigh of relief. The Colonel let out a snort of short laughter. I couldn't help but crack a grin at his reaction. It wasn't a very well kept secret that everyone found Stark to be annoying at times. But being stuck around him 24/7 was rather annoying.

"Pack your bags Dover. You're being sent back to England." Colonel Phillips said to me. I opened my mouth to speak but he raised his hands to stop the words.

"This isn't a punishment. You're being sent back to England to prep things for Dr. Erskine and the results of this science project of his." The Colonel said, rolling his eyes as he said project. I knew that he didn't really approve of Project: Rebirth, but I knew that with Steve as the test subject then it would surely work. I had faith in both of them.

"Understood Colonel, what about Agent Carter? Is she coming with me as well?" I asked. I knew it probably wasn't the best time or place to ask such kind of questions but I had to know that someone would be watching out for Steve. Dr. Erskine could look out for himself and so could Stark, but I was more worried about Steve not being strong enough. Knowing him he would get into trouble within five minutes of being on the Camp Base.

"Agent Carter is staying here. She'll be taking over your role here and then when the project moves to England you'll have your job back." The Colonel explained. I nodded my head and then took my leave. He didn't say a word as I left so I expected he didn't need my services any further. I walked down the hallway and down a flight of stairs that led to the lab where Stark and Dr. Erskine were working side by side. In the middle of the room was a long silver gray tube like coffin. I walked around it as I inspected it from head to toe. No doubt that this is where Steve would most likely go under the transformation. Unfortunately I wouldn't be here to see it. But I'm sure I'd still be able to recognize him even after her undergoes the project serum.

"Fascinating, isn't?" Dr. Erskine asked me as he approached the platform. I smiled at him and nodded my head. It surely was.

"Indeed, Doctor. But I'm afraid I won't be able to see it in action. I have orders to leave and go back to England. I'll just have to settle for the results instead." I informed Dr. Erskine. His kind smile made the corners of his eyes wrinkle which in return made me smile once more.

"A shame indeed, I will miss you my dear."

"And I you, Dr. Erskine." I said with a sad smile. He patted my hands and we parted ways. I went to go look for Peggy and Stark and tell them the news. I knew Peggy would understand but I wasn't sure how Stark would take it. Although I would be glad to finally be rid of the pest; he had grown on me. I guess that was why Mr. Jarvis stayed around. I'd have to ask Mr. Jarvis that one day.

"There you are Sunshine," a voice called out. I turned around and saw Stark walking next to Peggy. She had an annoyed look on her face. I realized that I was his saving grace from Peggy's wrath. "Where'd you go?" Stark asked. I met them half way and asked if we could talk in private. Stark led both Peggy and I to his makeshift office.

"I have orders to go back to England. I'll be leaving tonight. It was a pleasure to work with you Howard; even if you did get on my nerves most of the time." Stark flashed me that pearly white smile of his and I rolled my eyes and I shoved him away. I turned back to Peggy. She was shaking her head at us. I shrugged my shoulders and grinned at her.

"I guess I'll be seeing you back London, if it's still standing by the time I get back." Peggy said. I nodded my head in agreement.

"I promise I'll do my best to prevent that." I told Peggy, winking at her. She leaned over to give me a hug and whispered good-bye before I left them behind. Stark followed behind me and Peggy went in the other direction. He walked beside me in comfortable silence as I made my way back towards the entrance door.

"I don't think I'll miss you in the slightest Mr. Stark." I teased him as I spoke with my British accent.

"Very funny Serena; I'll miss you sunshine." He said with sincerity. I could see it in his as well. I leaned in to place a kiss on his cheek. And this time he didn't try to play any of his tricks. He just stood still beneath my lips.

"I'll miss you too Howard. Don't be a stranger Stark." I told him before I moved away to open the door and left him standing in my wake. I was sad that I was forced to leave my friends behind but in the middle of war there is no time to be selfish. I had to do what needed to be done. But before I could fully leave my home behind I had to tell Peggy one more thing.

"Wait Peg, there's one more thing I need to tell you." Peggy looked over her shoulder as she stopped in her track.

"Anything." Peggy said with a smile. I knew I could always trust her. I walked up to her and pulled her aside so no one else could hear our conversation.

"The man that Dr. Erskine picked for Project Rebirth," I started off saying so Peggy would be on the same page. Peggy nodded her head. "Please look after him. He's an old- good friend of mine. I don't want to see him get hurt." Peggy nodded her head and smiled at me. She grabbed my clasped hands and gave me a reassuring pat.

"I promise to look after him the best I can." I couldn't help but pull Peggy in for a hug. I was going to miss her the most. She reminded me of home, before the war started. I pulled away from the hug and walked back over towards the door that we had entered through to make my exit. Things were going to change, I could feel it. Hitler wasn't going to win the war. We were going to win some and lose some, as we all do when war comes but in the end the good would always win out.
