Will POV.
"What the hell?" Kate says. She has just said aloud what everyone had been thinking.
"We have to find out." I say standing up.
"How?" Luke says, throwing his arms up.
"We can't ask them because they won't tell us but we can always eavesdrop." I look to everyone and they're nodding in agreement.
"A mission." Lydia says quietly she lifts her head. "We will find out what they are hiding. We can figure out a plan."
We all have a look of determination. We will find out what our parents are trying to hide from us.
"C'mon," Finn says standing up. "Let's find out when dinner's ready. I'm starving." Leave it up to Finn to think about food in a time like this.
We all smile and follow Finn down the stairs. Rose walks beside me. I glance at her. Her eyebrows are furrowed and her lips are pursed.
"What do you think it is?" I ask, she looks to me and shrugs. I want to ask her what she thinks about me but I don't. It's stupid.
Finn barges in the door and we all follow. The parents are laughing, obviously over their previous conversation.
"Mother," Finn begins. "When's dinner ready?"
"Probably half an hour," Annie says. "Could you lay the table, Finnie." I stifle a laugh.
"I'll help." Rose pipes up and follows Finn into the dining area. I can't help but feel a little jealous.
"Thank you." Annie smiles. I'm debating whether to follow Finn and Rose.
"Let's go upstairs." Lydia says. We walk back to the girls room and sit on the bed. We stay in silence, wondering what is so important about our parents past?
"I've an idea." Kate says, we all turn around and look at her expectantly. "You know how Gale and Peeta like, hate eachother?"
It was obvious that they had something going on earlier today. We all nod. Why is she bringing this up? I think.
"I think that might be something to do with that secret." She sits up, throwing her legs over the side of the bed. "If we get them alone, maybe they'll start talking and we'll be there to listen in." She looks up to all of us, scanning our faces for a reaction.
"That might work." I say after a long pause, Luke and Lydia nod in agreement. "How would we get them alone though?" I say. We all think.
Maybe we could get all the women to go on a women thingy, but what about Thresh and Finnick? Do they have anything in common that Peeta and Gale don't?
My lose my trail of thought when I hear laughter coming from the stairs. Rose and Finn. I had a good time with Rose and I thought I had a chance but with Finn in the picture there is no hope. I mean Finn is hot. I don't mean it in a weird way I just… Will. Stop.
They walk in the door.
"Thanks Finnie." Rose says with a mischevious smirk on her face. Finn groans.
"Would you stop calling me that." He laughs and I suddenly feel really annoyed at him. Finn is a nice guy, I tell myself. But I can't help the envy bubbling up within me.
I see Kate and Lydia look at eachother and smirk. I know what that's about. I'm not stupid. They obviously like the idea of them two together and all I want to do is storm out of the room and never come back.
When did I become such an emotional wreck? It's just a girl that you happen to like, that might just like your friend. It sounds so simple but the feelings rage inside me.
"Guys, we have a plan." Luke says beckoning them to sit down.
"Go on." Finn urges.
"Gale and Peeta have something against eachother and we think if we can find it out maybe it will tell us something."
"I thought maybe we could get all the girls to do something… you know, something that the guys couldn't really do." I say struggling to from my sentence.
"Like a spa day?" Lydia suggests. I hear Rose groan.
"Yeah," Kate says enthusiastically. "That's a great idea!"
"No!" Rose exclaims. She doesn't seem like the type to be into her looks. She doesn't need to. She could be wearing a plastic bag and still look beautiful.
"C'mon," Lydia pleads. "It'll be fun." Rose looks at them in disbelief.
"Fun?" she scoffs.
"I heard there was a good place like 45 minutes away." Luke says. Rose glares at him but everyone else raises their eyebrow wondering how he knew that. "The girls in my class always talk about it." He says quickly, defending himself from the accusing stares.
"Children!" Annie calls from downstairs. "Dinner's ready!"
We all plummet down the stairs. I didn't realise how hungry I was until I could smell the stew wafting through the door.
We all sit down and shovel the food into our mouths. I blank out the conversation until I hear voices rise. Gale.
"Thank you Johanna." Finnick says.
"Stop." Gale says firmly toward Finnick. Peeta looks up, confused.
"Are you okay?" he asks slowly.
"Fine." Gale says quickly. He glances toward Finnick again. Is that a warning glance? What is up with this? Finnick slams his fork down and opens his mouth about to speak before Annie grabs his hand and strokes it. His face softens and he smiles down at her. He shoots a glare at Gale before digging into his food again. What had Finnick done that had bothered Gale so much? The silence is so unbearable I can't take another second of it.
"This is delicious, Mrs. Odair." I say. Annie smiles.
"Thank you," she says. "And you can call me Annie." We exchange smiles and begin eating again. The silence creeps up on us and this time nobody bothers to break it until Lydia speaks up.
"We heard that there is a nice spa retreat and we were wondering if we could go some time?" I glance at Rose and she scowls. She sees me smiling and returns it. My heart flutters but I remind myself that there is no point.
"That's a great idea." Rue says.
"It will be nice and satisfying." Madge agrees nodding her head.
"That's what she said." Finnick snorts. The whole table erupts in laughter and Annie hits him in the arm giving him a stern look but ending out chuckling with the rest of us.
"Good one." Finn laughs. The tension lifts from the table and multiple conversations bloom. I stay silent, still completely focused on my food. Katniss and Johanna are having a conversation across the table.
"I know." Johanna says, laughing.
"Lydia Mellark has a nice ring to it, don't you think?" Katniss laughs.
Even the parents are in on this. I smile to myself. I finish the last bit of my food and lean back onto my chair.
I look at the people talking. Peeta and father. They are talking about work. My father works in an office. Something to do with the Districts and communication or something. We live in District 11 in a cottage. It's nice an homey but I always feel something that looms over us. Like the hushed conversations over the table and the forbidden attic. I know it isn't a health precaution with the unstable floorboards.
Suddenly I know what to do. I turn to Finn beside and shake his shoulder. I smile at him and he knows what I mean. I have an idea.
00000000000000000
The minute everone has finished their meal we bound up the stairs and rush into the room.
Once everyone has seated I jump up.
"I have an idea." Everyone looks at me eagerly. "In my house I have always been forbidden from the attic." That's is all I needed to say. Everyone's eyes widen. Rose and Luke looks at eachother.
"Same." Kate says.
"I think that goes with everyone, am I right?" I ask. Everyone nods and I turn to Finn. "Do you have an attic?" He nods and smirks.
"How are we going to get up there without the parents noticing?" Lydia asks.
"We need a distraction." Rose says. "A really big one." We stay silent, thinking.
"Oh!" Luke says jumping up. "What if we all went down to the beach and someone pretends to drown?"
The plan processes and we all know it will be perfect.
"Yeah." Finn says. "Who is the worst swimmer?"
We all stay silent.
"I'll do it." Lydia says. "I'm the smallest and they would expect it from me." It's true.
"Are you sure?" Finn asks and she nods. Finn stands up. "I'll be back in a second." We all wait patiently until he comes back with a piece of paper and a pen. He sits at the desk and we all crowd around him. Trying to get a look at what he's doing.
Day 1.
Girls go to spa.
Thresh and Finnick
He looks up at me.
"What does Thresh like to do?" I think.
"Golfing?" I say. He does like golfing but he never has time to.
"Great, they can do that. But someone will have to go with them or they will think it's suspicious."
"I'll go." Me and Luke say in unison.
Finn turns back to the piece of paper.
Thresh and Finnick, Luke and Will golfing.
"How about two people eavesdrop with a notepad and two people will be hiding somewhere as backup if something happens." Finn says. We all nod.
Lydia and Kate backup and Rose and Finn eavesdroppers.
He stops writing.
"Is that okay?" he asks.
No. I think as I stare at a sentence.
Rose and Finn eavesdroppers.
After a while we end up lying on the bed and talking.
"What was up with Gale and Finnick at the dinner table?" I ask.
"I dunno." Rose says. I get a flutter of excitement, knowing that she acknowledged me but I suppress it when I see Finn glance and her and they exchange fond smiles.
So… Team Will or Team Finn?
