A/N: Thanks for your reviews! I think we can all agree that Kylo isn't the brightest when it comes to keeping Rey safe, but what can we do? Here's Chapter three I hope you enjoy it.

Chapter 3

Kylo had made it for three weeks before Rey started asking him about leaving his apartment. He couldn't blame her, if he had been in her shoes he wouldn't have made three days let alone weeks. He was relieved to see her looking healthier than when he'd first set eyes on her, she had gained some weight and strength. He spent his free time teaching her about the force, he found her to be a good student. She was eager to learn as much as he could teach and would exhaust herself trying to perfect the techniques he showed her. She would work until she fell asleep on the floor and he would pick her up and put her in his bed while he slept on the couch in his living room. Thankfully Snoke hadn't made anymore appearances in her mind, Kylo thought his finding her that day was just bad luck all the stress she must have gone through put crack in her defenses and he had slipped in.

He had laid Rey in his bed with a sigh. He was getting tired of the couch it was hard and too short for him to spread out, his joints made ugly cracking noises when he woke up and stretched and it left him feeling sore.
"Benny" She'd started call him that after she witnessed a memory of him and his mother baking a cake. "Will you lay with me?" Ren was surprised and confused.

"Is something wrong Rey? Have you been having bad dreams again?" He sat down at the edge of the bed beside her.

"No, I just want you to be happy" Kylo let out a laugh. She was also so bluntly honest with her thoughts and feelings no matter how many times he witnessed her candor it always surprised him.

"I want you to get some sleep" He said in response ruffling her hair. "I am fine on the couch"

Reyna shook her head. "No you're not, I can feel the pain it gives you to lay there all squished together." He forgot about how sensitive she was to him. He blamed it on the fact that she only ever spent time with him. "Plus, I like to be close to you. It makes my heart beat slow" There was that candor again.

"Maybe just one night, for the sake of your little heart" Her eyes shined up at him and he could see the flakes of gold sparkle. He wanted to keep that sparkle in her eyes forever.

He stepped into the refresher and changed into his night clothes a simple pair of pajama shorts and soft cotton tee shirt. When he came back into the room he was surprised to see that Rey had slid over closer to the wall and was still awake looking at him.

"I had to make sure you didn't sneak off to the couch like you planned to if I was asleep when you came out" She said giving him a look that spoke of innocence. She had no clue how invasive it was to read someone's mind the way she always read his, but it had been part of her for so long and no one had ever taught her not to do it. She wasn't sure if she could control it anyway, plus this gift had saved her many times back on Jakku.

Ren sighed and in defeat and slid under the blankets on his bed. He let out a groan in happiness as his muscles responded happily to the softness of the mattress.

"Why don't you turn the light off, it's good practice" Ren advised, it was something he could do easily but she was still learning to manipulate objects so he knew it might be difficult for her. He heard her take a deep breath in and slowly let it out her eyes closed in focus and after two minutes the room fell into darkness. Kylo smiled with pride, her force was strong and if he kept working with her she could even grow to be his equal. The night was peaceful he fell into a dreamless sleep for the first time in a long time.

Kylo woke up early and was surprised to feel something on his arm, he looked over and it was Rey. She was curled up hugging his arm as if she was trying to keep him there with her, he smiled. She was an interesting child though the only other children he'd ever really met had been at Luke's Academy, he felt most of them had been the spoiled brats of other politicians. He pushed the memory of them and the academy away, he didn't want Rey to know what he'd done. Gently he pulled his arm from her grasp and stood up. He had to attend to his morning duties. He decided today would be the day he took Rey out of the apartment. He skipped his morning shower and just got dressed, sliding his helmet on he left.

He had to check on the progress of the trooper training program so he made his way to their training facility, much to his dismay he ran into Armitage on his way down.

"Your scavenger didn't want to play this morning?" These taunts had become part of his normal routine but it still took all of Kylo's self-control to restrain himself. He knew Hux was trying to get a rise out of him so he would have a reason to tell Snoke. Keeping his mouth shut and his hands to himself meant keeping Rey safe for now at least.

Kylo Ren's restraint was getting on Hux nerves. He didn't know much about the girl they'd picked up on Jakku but he could see that she had changed something in the knight. He'd have to do something more drastic to get the knight upset, a cruel smirk fell on is lips, he knew what he'd do he just had to bide his time.

Kylo left Hux entering a set of double doors he appeared on a cat walk over a large gymnasium the storm troopers below were sparring against each other. He observed them for several minutes pleased with the progress of most though there were a few stragglers among the group.

"What do you think Sir?" A Captain in red armor approached him black cape flowing behind. "Most have been excelling, a few will need more training. One I am recommending for reconditioning" The man pointed out different troopers as he spoke and Kylo nodded.

"Reconditioning? Why will that be necessary?" It wasn't common for adults who grew up in the order to need to be reconditioned, it happened just not often.

"Too much independence, keeps questioning orders and he just won't submit" Kylo nodded understanding the reasoning.

"Which one is to be sent?" He looked through the room trying to spot the worst of the group.

"It's FN-2187" Cardinal pointed to a trooper Kylo hadn't even considered. He was the best fighter in the group continually taking down his partner who wasn't doing bad either.

"I see, before you send him to be reconditioned have him come to my chambers. I'd like to speak with him myself" With that Kylo left mostly pleased with the results of the training.

He was going to head to his own training room when he got a better idea and turned back to his chambers instead. He returned to find Rey up and dressed in a pair of black robes he'd brought for her. She was sitting at the small table near his kitchen eating more of the Jogan fruit. He'd have to remember to get her some jogan cake the next time it was available.

"Get finished up we're going out" His voice came out robotic through the modulator and she turned jumping off the chair.

"Really?" She'd asked him about leaving the room once or twice but new that he feared for her so she tried not to push him, but she was getting cabin fever. Kylo decided to remove his helmet he knew it made her feel uneasy.

"Yes we'll go to my private training room and I'll teach you some things about fighting. You've been doing well in the force I think it's okay to take a day off" He could feel excitement burst through her like a firework as she practically shoved the rest of the jogan fruit into her mouth.

"I'm ready" she mumbled through her packed mouth. The joy in her spoke to the stars of light in him, he could feel them growing to meet hers. It brought out a conflict in him but he didn't let that trouble him, it was just her nature and it only happened in her presence.

"Remember the rules, it's only a short walk but stay behind me and don't speak to anyone" Kylo turned to the door and turned back to her suddenly. "It's important when we leave this room that you never call me Ben out there okay?" He'd never explained his different names to her, he didn't have it in him to tell her of his betrayal to his mother.
"Yes sir Mr. Kylo Ren Sir" She saluted him trying to not to laugh, but he knew she could sense the seriousness of the matter.

They walked out the door her two paces behind him, he reached out with the force to see who was around. He sensed someone rounding the corner with the intent of finding him and he stopped. Too his surprise it was the trooper FN-2187. The trooper stopped in front of him and stood at attention.

"I wasn't expecting you so soon 2187" Ren admitted, he felt Rey stop behind him. "Why don't you come with us to the training room. I'd like to speak with you" The trooper remained silent but gave a quick nod. Ren appreciated that he didn't look at the girl following behind him. He continued to walk past the trooper and down the corridor. It was a short walk but Kylo felt the suspicion coming off Rey and he realized that she was letting him feel him like she was asking him a question. 'He is fine' Was all he thought to her and he felt her concern ease.

They entered the training room which was smaller than the one the troopers had but larger than expected for being for one person. Rey let out an oooh of interest as she saw a glass cabinet filled with different training weapons. It was then the trooper looked down at her with interest and she looked back up at him tilting her head to the side curiously.

"FN this is my apprentice Rey" Rey was surprised that Kylo was introducing her, he had been going to great lengths to keep her existence a secret. "I want you to help her become a skilled fighter"

"Sir?" The trooper was confused, he thought he was going to be reprimanded. His captain wasn't pleased with him when he'd told him Kylo Ren had requested his presence in his chambers.

"You have independence and I can feel your compassion. You aren't ruthless and empty like the others and I need someone who has the mind to know when enough is enough" Kylo explained and then he turned to Rey. "I have to many responsibilities to train you properly, we will trust this trooper." His assurance calmed her concern even more and she nodded.

"Hi, I'm Reyna and I'm seven years old" She introduced herself to the Storm Trooper who looked down at her. "Can he take his helmet off? I don't like them" Much to the troopers surprise Ren agreed.

"Only in this room, it is against protocol outside. You understand that right Rey?" Kylo asked the child and she nodded.

"I don't want anyone to get in trouble." The thought alone worried her, she wanted them to all be happy.

"You may remove your helmet and armor here. You are to train her but she is in command, do you understand?" Kylo was using his Knight voice which Rey didn't care for but knew that he had to keep up a certain image of himself. She knew the others here feared him and that he enjoyed the power he had, it was the darkness in him that let him find pleasure in the fear of others and even though she didn't like it she kept her feelings to herself.

The trooper pulled his helmet off and Rey was surprised to see he was human. His dark skin and eyes compelled her she wanted to read his mind but she only let herself read Ben so openly. He looked down at her as she examined him, his face was stoic but Rey let herself sense his confusion.

"Yes sir" He directed his comment back to Kylo Ren who was pleased.

"Okay Rey, I expect you to work hard." Ren turned his attention to her and she nodded. "I'll get a full report at the end of the day from each of you. And Rey, behave." She smiled at his last remark and knew exactly what he meant. 'No mind reading, I want you to really learn how to fight not just rely on the force. You and I will work with the force later' She nodded again and the trooper seemed to take notice of some kind of unspoken conversation between the two but new better than to let his mind wander too far.

Kylo turned back to the trooper. "If you try anything you won't make it to reconditioning" He knew the trooper hadn't thought of anything other than what was going on, but he wanted to ensure that nothing came to mind while he was gone, and with that he left to continue his tasks for the day.

"I won't let him hurt you" Rey spoke first smiling at the trooper. "I don't like FN numbers, numbers, numbers you need a real name." FN didn't say anything he just looked at the young apprentice continuing his blank expression. "Oh What do you think about Finn?" More silence. "You're allowed to speak B-Ren is gone, he can't even hear you now"

"Pick a weapon" His first words to her as he walked to the cabinet opening the doors. "I want to see what you can do" She was disappointed he was being so serious but she went to look in the cabinet. She pulled out a quarter staff something she had used to defend herself on Jakku often. He mimicked her and pulled out a staff as well. "Okay I don't want you to hold back, I'll go easy on you" His words bothered her. Go easy on her? He didn't even know her or have a clue what she was capable of. Finn noticed her eyes darken as she twirled her staff between her fingers and made her way across from him on the practice floor. It hadn't been his intention to provoke her, but if it helped her focus he wouldn't apologize for it either. She waited for him to make a move, she'd never provoked an attack before her main tactic had always the defense of herself and her scrap.

He sensed her wait and decided to make the first move swinging the staff towards her side without hesitation she held her staff one end in each hand as she swiveled and caught his staff against hers using his force against him she used it to deflect his staff up and over her continuing her momentum she released one end of her weapon using the tension she built up to swing it up under his feet knocking him on his back. Finn jumped back up and swiped at her a few times which she deflected with grace but it only took him a minute to get his speed up and his staff was under her knocking her off her feet like she had done to him.

"That wasn't bad kid" He said and leaned down to help her up, but she refused his hand and stood up on her own. Her eyes still hardened at him. She swung her staff across towards his head but he blocked it easily and made to jab at her but she dodged it with more grace than he'd seen most storm troopers manage. They continued their back and forth at each other until he caught her again flipping her onto the floor. She was breathing hard with exhaustion, she wasn't usually bested in a fight but then again the other scavengers on Jakku were week and rarely had any kind of combat training. The trooper she had named Finn sat down beside her and looked her over.

"So what brings you to the first order?" He had barely even broken a sweat, she groaned in frustration.

"They bought me" She said it with such nonchalance it surprised him, he didn't think slaves could be strong. He'd imagined owners kept them weak so they wouldn't run away. "I was not a slave, just a scavenger" She hadn't meant to read his mind, but it was too late to take back her words now.

"You're like him then?" He asked with no care or surprise. "I figured you must be special if you were Kylo Ren's apprentice" She smiled at him, he was smart.

"You can't say anything, no one knows I exist. Well except the red haired general Hux" She shivered at his name. "Kylo wants me to be able to defend myself against him" Finn nodded understanding.

"I've never met him, but I have heard of him and never anything good" He smiled at her. "I'll make sure you can take care of yourself, you've already a great foundation"

"What is reconditioning? Why do you need it?" She'd heard been threaten him with it, but she didn't understand it.

"It means they go in my head and change how I think" He grimaced as he explained it. "It means I don't think the way they want me too, I'm broken" Rey made a face and stood up and put her hands on the sides of his head. Very gently she used the force to poke into his head, he was surprised but he didn't resist her.

"Nope, I don't see anything broken" She smiled at him and she sat back down. She let out a yawn and her stomach rumbled with unhappiness. She'd been eating so regularly lately that when she skipped a meal her body protested.

"Why don't I take you back to your room?" Finn offered holding his hand out to her. She nodded letting him help her stand up this time as he stood up too. "I like the name by the way. Finn I like it" She looked up to him with a static happiness that stung him, her eyes seemed to glow.

He put his helmet on and let her lead him to a door, he thought she must be mistaken. This was Kylo Ren chambers. "I live here, he watches me" She opened the door and turned around to face him. "Come in" She commanded.

"I don't think Kylo Ren would enjoy me in his room" Finn said sounding a bit nervous for the first time.

"Well right now it's my room, Kylo said you have to listen to me I'm in charge" Finn sighed and followed her rule, this is why children shouldn't have power he thought.

She gave him a smile that conveyed a little bit of arrogance as she climbed onto the counter and grabbed a couple jogan fruit out of a bowl. She held one out to him, he hesitated but stepped further into the apartment. "Have you ever have one of these? They delicious!" He couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm as he took the fruit. She jumped off the counter and pulled him to sit on the sofa next to her. He took off his helmet and and set it on the floor besides his feet.

As they ate their fruit she asked him questions about being a storm trooper and about his training, what it was like on the rest of the ship. He told her as many stories as he thought would be appropriate, and one point he looked down and realized she had fallen asleep head resting on his leg. He didn't know what to do so he just stayed still and quiet, his trooper training making him good at that.

He didn't know how much time had passed when he heard the door open. "What are you doing?" His light sabre flashed on threateningly.
