Chapter 3. Avoiding vexation.

- Lily's Diary. -

..'I have missed you too, my beautiful son.'

They were interrupted by the portrait of the fat lady, the secret door to the Gryffindor common room opening and their best friend Neville Longbottom rushing in, searching the room looking for them.

"There you are." Neville said out of breath. "Quickly, we have to go to our suite!"

Not questioning Neville, Hermione jumped up with Harry as they quickly grabbed the diary and the other books and bags they had with them, and followed Neville to tapestry of Godric Gryffindor that hung between two large windows, and hid the old oak door to their suite. As they closed the door they could hear some very loud angry voices coming into the Gryffindor common room.

Hermione placed the diary and books down on a table of the lounge room of their suite as Neville went to the large magical portrait next to the portal door, that showed a current live view of Hogwarts Castle from the aspect of where they first saw it across the lake on the way down to the boats from the Hogwarts Express. The castle looked brilliant in the afternoon sunshine.

"View to the Gryffindor common room please." Neville asked urgently.

The view point of the picture of the castle changed and seemed to zoom towards the Gryffindor tower, focusing on the large window that would be to the right of the Gryffindor tapestry and gave a view of the common room. Neville, Harry and Hermione could see into the room as though they were standing just outside the window. They were astounded at the sight of three very angry redheads and Professor McGonagall with a whole host of fellow Gryffindors all yelling at a very angry Ronald Bilius Weasley.

Their tenuous friendship with the young vexatious redhead had been very rocky since the Hogwarts Express.

Hermione asked the obvious question. "What did Ronald do this time?"

"Well you know how possessive of Harry Ronald is." Neville said as Harry and Hermione nodded. "Well, at lunch Ronald was annoyed that Harry had not come to the Great Hall to eat." Neville started. "I think he is a bit jealous that his best mate is spending too much time with you, Hermione."

"But I wanted to give Hermione her birthday present while he wasn't around to spoil the moment." Harry justified himself, wondering why he had to as Hermione wrapped him up in a hug. "We just missed lunch! What is his problem?"

"Well it was good that you did. Malfoy came over to challenge you to a wizard duel in the Trophy Room at midnight tonight, and asked Ronald where you (Scarface) were. He got all embarrassed when he didn't know, and then tried to make up for it by accepting the wizard duel on your behalf as your second and you being his best mate. Malfoy rejected Ronald's offer because he didn't believe that you was Ronald's best mate as he didn't know where you were."

"That would not end well."

"No it didn't. The idiot pulled out his wand to curse Malfoy and completely ignored that Snape was..."

"Professor Snape." Hermione corrected.

"Yeah him. He was standing right behind Malfoy just waiting for the idiot to do something really stupid. With a flick of Professor Snape's wand, Ronald was disarmed and petrified, landing heavily on the floor. He gave Ronald a month's detention with Filch and took 200 points from Gryffindor for trying to curse an unarmed Malfoy in the Great Hall."

"But it has only been three weeks and Ronald has already lost a lot of points. Gryffindor would not have 200 points!"

"Well Gryffindor has minus 155 points now which is why Professor McGonagall is so angry with the idiot that she came up to deal with Ronald while his three brothers dragged him back to the common room. I rushed ahead to warn you two as he is blaming it all on you, Hermione."

"Well, that is not very fair!" Said a kind sweet young female adult voice behind them. "Hello, Harry."

Neville, Harry and Hermione turned away from the growing disaster that was happening in the Gryffindor common room to see that the Emerald Green leather covered diary had opened itself up and was standing upright with the inside front cover flap opened up to reveal a magical portrait of a beautiful young redhead witch with the same emerald green eyes as Harry. Harry had heard his mother's voice for the first time and was speechless.

"Mistress Lily!" Said Ally the house-elf who has been looking after Neville, Harry and Hermione, as she brought in a tray of finger food for Harry and Hermione's lunch.

"Ally? What are you doing at Hogwarts?" Lily asked.

"Mistress Lily, Ally is so glad to see you." Ally said. "But Mistress Lily must not be angry with Ally. Bad old Whitebeard forced Ally to work at Hogwarts, he banished poor Dobby to be enslaved into the house of bad faith and his mate Winky to the Crouch. Ally has had to wait until young master Harry came here."

"That interfering old coot!" Lily said as Ally shied away. "It is not your fault, Ally, but something is not right and it seems that the headmaster is at the bottom of it."

Hermione went to comfort the old elf as Harry found his voice. "Mum? You are so beautiful."

"Why thank you, dear, you look just like your father but with my eyes. Sadly you have not had the childhood that we had arranged for you." Lily said as she gave Harry a closer look as he approached the diary. "Where on earth did you get that cursed scar on your forehead?"

Harry touched his scar with his hand. "Hagrid said that Professor Dumbledore said Voldemort gave it to me when I vanquished him on Halloween in 81."

"You vanquished Voldemort? You were only a toddler."

"That is what Hagrid said, but I really think it was something you and dad did that vanquished Voldemort and saved me. Hagrid said the house blew up and maybe I was injured in the explosion."

"I had found some old Peverell family magic to use that might have saved you from Voldemort. But it would have not given you that scar nor blown up Dumbledore's old family home that we were forced to hide in. Has Pomfrey tried to heal or remove it?"

"Can it be healed or removed?"

"Magic can do many things, Harry."

"Professor McGonagall said that Professor Dumbledore wouldn't remove the scar even if he could as it could come in handy?" Hermione said.

"That may be handy for the headmaster's plans, but it is your head Harry, and that is a cursed scar." Lily replied.

"Ronald would never let you remove the famous scar as that indicated that he is the best mate of the Boy-Who-Lived." Neville pointed out.

Harry remembered. "Yeah, the scar was the first thing Ronald checked for when we first met."

"Well, I will make some inquiries as I am getting a bad vibe off that scar."

"Thank you, mum." Harry said for the first time and smiled. It felt so good.

Lily turned to the other boy. "Is that Neville, Frank and Alice Longbottom's boy?"

"Yes, mum. He is my best mate."

"Good, the Longbottoms have always been good friends to the Potters. You look just like your father did at your age, Neville, but with your mother's eyes. How are they?"

Neville smiled at the thought of who he looked like but shied away as Harry answered the question for him. "They were attacked a few days after we were, mum, and have been in St Mungo's since. Neville grew up with his Grandmother."

"Oh, I am so sorry, Neville. Dumbledore failed to protect them as well." Lily said as she turned to Hermione as she joined Harry in a group hug with Neville. "There is a lot that has happened that I need to catch up on. We can start by you three explaining why we are in the Gryffindor Founders Quarters."

"Oh is that where we are?" Harry asked. He had not paid much attention to where Ally had led them to. "How did you know?"

"The Gryffindor crest over the fireplace would have been a big clue, Harry, and there is an enchanted integrated map of Hogwarts in the back of the diary connected to the Hogwarts wards." Lily explained.

Hermione started to explain what happened the first night. "After the opening feast and everyone had gone to bed Harry had a terrible nightmare and woke everyone up."

"Yeah I thought that I had eaten a bit too much, because it started as a very strange dream. I dreamed that I was wearing Professor Quirrell's turban, he is the current DADA professor for this year. Well the turban kept talking to me, telling me that I must transfer to Slytherin at once, because it was my destiny. Even the sorting hat told me that I would be great in Slytherin. I told the turban I didn't want to be in Slytherin; it got heavier and heavier and the smell of garlic was nauseating; I tried to pull it off but it tightened painfully; — and there was Malfoy, laughing at me as I struggled with it — then Malfoy turned into the hook-nosed teacher, Professor Snape, whose laugh became high and cold — there was a burst of green light and I woke, screaming, sweating and shaking." Harry remembered.

Hermione continued. "So Ronald was very angry that Harry had interrupted his dream of eating the opening feast all over again, and said some nasty words to him. Ronald is a real grizzly bear if his beauty sleep has been disturbed."

"And he snores like one, too!"

"Yes I heard him snore from in the girls' dorm the first night. Anyway Ronald hates to wake up in the mornings unless it is for breakfast. So Neville and I sat with Harry in the common room while everyone else went back to bed, and then Ally came and led us to this beautiful suite. We each have our own bedroom with an en suite bathroom and Neville has claimed to last bedroom for his friend Luna who is starting Hogwarts tomorrow."

"And Hermione has claimed the library." Neville said in his defense getting a smile from Hermione.

"Oh that is very good of you, Ally."

"Ally was only trying to care for the young master and his friends while Hogwarts is trying to protect him from the Bad old Whitebeard and his pet Death Eater."

"And Ronald? Is that Ronald Weasley, Molly Weasley's boy?"

"Yes."

"He seems to have inherited a double portion of her Prewett fiery temper."

"Yes it has already got him into so much trouble and she has sent two loud howlers to him for breakfast."

"Yes, that would be her trying to embarrass the poor boy. Arthur Weasley is a kind, generous wizard, and Bill and Charlie are just like him while Percy was a bit of a mummy's boy." Lily chuckled.

"Yeah, professor McGonagall wrote to Mrs. Weasley to ask her to not send any more howlers to Hogwarts but she sent a howler to her telling to mind her own business." Hermione said.

Lily snorted. "Dumbledore liked everyone to know that the only wizard Voldemort feared was him but it was an open joke that the only witch Dumbledore feared was Molly Prewett."

"That would explain how much favouritism the Headmaster has shown Ronald and why he thinks he owns Harry." Neville said.

"Oh, does he? Start at the beginning, Harry, when did you first met the Weasleys?" Lily instructed.
