Mello coughed as his legs lost strength and he fell to the floor. L watched in amazement, this would be Light soon.
Mello was never good at keeping away his emotions and that showed during this moment. It also showed that Near was a prodigy at hiding his emotions. Mello scrambled to his feet and hugged Near tightly, Near didn't move.
"Good to see you old friend" Near muttered kind of squished by Mello. Mello just sniffed and held Near tighter. After he broke Mello replied to Near's greeting while holding the albino's shoulders.
"Good to see you, you fluffy sheep" he chocked while trying not to cry some more. Near just nodded.
As for L well...he was never really one for sappy reunions. He thought about how the two appeared to never know each other, actually last he saw, they hated each other's guts. He also heard that Mello became a bit of a criminal after Near was chosen when L had died. Or at least that's what he read in the report. Again, this scene was far too similar. So much that L was a bit uncomfortable. Mello and Near were just like him and his...old friend
Light didn't know where he was, he didn't know where he was going, and he didn't know where he used to be. His clothes were only covering a partial amount of his body, and he was so weak he could barely stand. It was a hot day, but Light was freezing, man was he cold, so very very cold. His eyes were squinting in the broad daylight and he was shifting his gaze everywhere out of shock and panic. His vision was disoriented while it kept waving around, and his muscles ached as he tried to move them. He could barely breath as he kept sucking in rigid and stale breaths that didn't provide him half as much oxygen as he needed. His body was stained and cloaked in dirt. Mud that was mixed with dry blood had splattered along his figure.
He was very scared. And he didn't know why.
Remember how when humans use a deathnote they are doomed to never go to heaven or hell? Well. Light was no exception and he met that exact fate. When he died he was thrown into a place of nothingness. There was literally nothing, he was nothing. There was nothing to comprehend, there was no comprehension, there was no comfort, and there was no suffering. There was no black or white, there was not even gray.
It was just...
Nothing.
And it was so traumatizing that anyone put in that situation would start decaying after 10 minuets. Light was just about broken. He limped and trotted womdering where he should go. Who was he anyway? Light closed his eyes and thought, and thought, and thought. He started to remember little details of his life. His dad was a police officer, he had a girlfriend named Misa, he was a top student, he had a little sister named Sayu, he had a notebook that could kill people, he was very fond of potato chips, and he loved to read. Light was searching for more memories and going over the list. One item that slipped over him at first came into veiw. He had a notebook that could kill people.
That's right, he had a shinigami acquaintance, he had a best friend named L. He had killed L. He was Kira! Misa was Kira! It was all coming back to him! He had died when he was shot by Matsuda!
He should be angry, but he wasn't. Light was in no shape to feel anything but weakness. And right now he wanted his strength back. He wanted to find a place where he could gain comfort and control over his mind. He also wanted to break down and cry. So he trotted to the only place that seemed logical.
Mello bit into one of L's chocolate bars. Near had explained how Mello was brought back to life and Mello told Near about how the last thing he remembered was finding it very hard to breath in the driver's seat of his truck after he captured Takeda. Near nodded as Mello told his story. L was eavesdropping in the back of the room. Half of his mind was wondering to how Light was doing. Really he was trying to get over the fact that he lost to Kira. Of course when he was alive he knew he had lost. But now, it just seemed more important than before.
As if on cue sirens started blasting through the building.
Reeeeeeeeeuh
Reeeeeeeeeuh
Giovanni spoke into his earpiece trying to find out what was going on. Mello freaked out and started whipping his head, trying to find the source of the sirens. Near did nothing. And L let himself get just a little bit excited as he smiled. Near took note of L's smile and narrowed his eyes. Somethng wasn't right.
"Uh huh okay" Giovanni talked over the sirens into his earpiece. He turned to Near.
"Sir, a suspicious figure was spotted trying to break in."
"Suspicious figure?" Near questioned.
"What dose this figure look like?" Mello screamed over the sirens while still a little freaked out.
Giovanni mumered some things into his earpiece and then turned to Near again.
"Brown hair, male, tall, and incredibly filthy."
L let himself smile a little wider. And it didn't take long for Near to put pieces together.
"You disgust me" Near muttered. But no one heard over the sirens.
"Sir, what should we do?" Giovanni interrupted Near's thoughts.
"Bring him up. Oh and turn off theese damn alarms. They're giving me a headache" He calmly ordered.
"Yes sir" Giovanni went back to muttering in his ear piece.
Soon the sirens went off, leaving everyone's ears ringing from the sudden absence. The group waited for this mysterious figure. Near, instead of watching the door, stared at L while almost gagging at the despicable bastard's decision. Mello was staring at the door but his mind was wondering towards Matt. He felt very guilty for being the cause of Matt's death.
The door flung open and everyone jerked their heads towards a man from the front desk holding Light by his torn up shirt collar. Light looked horrified and full out batshit insane. Everyone was shocked in one way or another. The man looked at Near, who nodded, and dropped Light to the ground. Then he turned around and shut the door. Light swung his head up to see everyone in the room.
"Giovanni, you are excused" Near said while twisting his hair.
"But sir-"
"This little situation is between the world's greatest detectives and Kira. If yoy must watch please do over surveillance cameras"
Mello shifted his gaze. Near wasn't making HIM leave so was that a compliment?
"...yes sir" Giovanni admited defeat and exited the room to attend other forms of business.
As soon as Giovanni left Near turned to Light who had L already standing over him.
"It's amazing how easily revenge can get ahold of even the best of us. Isn't it L?" Near kept twisting his hair. He spoke calmly but the edge in his voice could cut through iron. L nodded like it was nothing and this pissed Near off. This little stunt L pulled was a form of betrayal and Near felt betrayed.
Mello was too distracted by the fact that Light Yagami was on the floor to notice the tension or the conversation.
"Why the hell would you do that!?" It wasn't yelling. But for Near it was loud. He only raised his voice a little but it was enough. He spat out the question through his teeth showing that he was really angry. This sudden out of character out burst is what made L turn his attention.
"I had to. I can not live knowing I never settled grounds a with Kir- no with Light."
"Then why not kill yourself?" Near challenged
"I could never do that either"
"..." Near honestly didn't know the right words to say. There were so many ways he could trot down this path. He didn't know which of the ways to choose.
"I want you to understand" L said turning back to Light.
"Under the circumstances of the situation I believe you would have done the same thing. Try to imagine yourself in the place of L. Besides, I do not belive this is the proper time to discuss the matter"
Near growled as L spoke. He was right. The problem at hand was much more important.
Light sat up on the floor whipping his head to look at everyone. Although when he got a good look his eyes set on L. The only person who he genuinely knew in the room.
"L?" Light half whimpered half whispered.
"And so we meet again" L stared at Light dead on. For once Light was appearing to completely submit. He hung his head in defeat. He remembered everything that happened between him and L. He remembered his joy and his hurt on the day of L's death. He remembered it all. L sat in his weird position on the floor right infront of Light. Or I guess you could say he crouched. Then he waited for Light to say something.
"I'm sorry" Light whispered. L widend his eyes.
"I thought I could create a new world" L honestly didn't know what to say.
"Years ago you asked me if I had ever once told the truth. I'm going to tell you now"
Mello was listening while in shock from the fact L and Light were not only talking verbally but a conversation was happening from their eyes.
"When I was dying I saw you standing infront of me. When I was working with you, it seemed half the time we were friends and the other half enemies. Well you appeared infront of me as my friend. And you wouldn't let me die alone. I was in a shack with Near, but he was not my firend. It was honestly amazing and I probably was hallucinating" L was in shock as he heard Light speak. Truth is he only called Light his friend to get to him. But the idea of a mutual firendship sounded absolutely amazing.
"Can I please tell you that when I did die I was so lonley. I went to a place where every thing was nonexistent and it was utter nothingness. I couldn't feel anything I couldn't see anything and I was just...nothing" Light was on the verge of tears.
"It's like being Near for a day, his eyesight is terrible" Mello scuffed and Near shot a cold glance at him.
"L" Light continued while actually starting to cry
"I'm so so sorry really. I should have never even picked up the death note. And I wouldn't have if I knew what was coming. I'm not lying I really am truly sorry and I hope you can fogive me. I don't know how I got here and I'm actually really scared. But right now all I want is a friend and your forgiveness. I truly believe that in another life we could've been the greatest of friends." Light confessed and L was so taken back he sweared he was stabbed. This was not like Light at all. Forget 'like' this was not Light.
"It can't be an act. This isn't his style" L thought. And in all honesty. He really was touched.
For now, revenge could wait...
