As Klaus' jet landed on the strip in Capri, he couldn't help but feel nervous and be scared of rejection. He knew he would never find another girl like Caroline. She was "beautiful, strong, so full of light," and her determination and her smile brightened his dark heart.
He drove the car he rented from the airport to the resort Damon said Caroline was staying at. He compelled the attendant at the desk, and finally made his way up to her room. He was just a few feet away when he heard a voice, her voice.
Caroline sighed, "Yes, Elena, I promise I will call more often. Mmhm, I promised Stefan I would come home in a few weeks for a visit." She stopped and sighed again in annoyance. "I'm fine, 'Lena, I swear. I've sported broken hearts before. This isn't anything new."
Klaus' heart dropped hearing Caroline's words. He hadn't meant to hurt her. He just needed her to realize he was upset and that he actually needs her more than anyone in the world. Klaus stepped up to the door and knocked.
"Listen, someone's at the door, I've got to go. I know, Elena, I love you, too. I'll call you later." Caroline hung up quickly and whooshed over to the door to open it. "Hell- Oh…" She froze seeing Klaus before her. She felt anger towards him, but she pushed that down so she could be civil. "What are you doing? How did you find me?"
He gave her his infamous smirk. "Hello to you, too, love. Damon let me know where you were. As to why I'm here, I came to take you back home, our home."
She scoffed. "We…," she pointed between them, "don't have a home. You have your mansion. I have this lovely room where I can drink and drink and not care whatsoever."
Klaus' smirk dropped, and his expression turned sad. "Caroline, please. Can we at least talk?"
Caroline held the door open for him and motioned for him to come in. He walked in with a solemn look on his face and shut the door behind him. She went back into the kitchen to grab her phone.
"You wanted to talk, so talk," she told him.
Klaus took a deep breath before speaking. "Caroline, I didn't mean anything I implied to you about Hayley. She is nothing more than the mother of my daughter. I do not have any feelings for her, and she is most definitely not mine. You are the woman I love, the woman I want to be with for the rest of my eternity. Like I said in my voicemail, you are my heart and my soul, and I am completely lost without you. You make me want to be a better man. If I've lost you forever, I wouldn't be able to cope."
Caroline listened to him speak. She looked down at the counter to avoid his gaze, her eyes were tearful. She sniffled softly. "Do you know how much it hurts to be basically told you're a second choice? And after thinking someone has finally put you first?" Klaus started to open his mouth, but Caroline kept talking. "I've had my heart broken, by Damon, by Matt, by Tyler, but this? This is more than heart break. It's like you tore my heart from chest, ripped it apart, then decided to beat it like a dead horse." She stopped to wipe her eyes; she was crying now. "I left Mystic Falls because I wanted to be with you, and I moved in with you, and I fell in love with Artemis." She sniffled once again. "I don't know that we would be able to come back from this. You have officially broken me. An apology and an "I love you" doesn't cut it."
Klaus stayed silent after she spoke. He listened to her sniffles and watched her grab a napkin to wipe her eyes with. He strutted over to her and took her face in his hands. "I love you, Caroline Forbes. You're right. You deserve to be a first choice, and I'm an ignorant fool for not making you that. You deserved to be loved and cherished." He stopped and leaned down and kissed her gently. He felt her tense up as her body reacted naturally to him. Caroline closed her eyes and kissed him back, only to deepen it. His tongue swept over her bottom lip, and she granted his tongue entrance to her mouth. She let out a slight moan when his tongue caressed hers. The next thing she knew, Caroline was being hoisted up onto the counter as Klaus moved his hand over side. She wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him closer; and pushed his jacket off him.
"Ugh, gross. Could you guys at least get a room? There's plenty of them here." Damon's voice interrupted them.
Caroline looked away in embarrassment. "Damon… I didn't think you'd be back so soon."
Damon chuckled. "Clearly."
Klaus was obviously angry. He thought he was getting somewhere with Caroline, then Damon had to ruin it all. He flashed towards Damon and grabbed him by the throat, then flashed again pinning Damon to the wall.
Caroline quickly got off the counter. "Klaus! Stop it! Let him go!"
Damon struggled for air as he squirmed underneath Klaus' hand. "Don't worry, Blondie. I can handle this."
Klaus let his hybrid features come to surface, and Caroline freaked out. She sped over to them and was able to maneuver Damon away. "Damon, go to your room!" Caroline shouted at him, and when he was getting ready to say something snarky, she yelled again, "NOW!" Damon stomped to his room like a child, not knowing what Klaus' deal was.
Caroline stared at Klaus angrily. "What the hell is wrong with you?! Damon is my friend. He was here for me when you should have been. You have no right to flip out on him."
Klaus just glared back at her. "On the contrary, sweetheart, he had no right to interrupt us."
She shook her head. "Well, I'm glad he did. You can't just barge in here with your apologies and your sweet nothings, then kiss me like that. You know how I react to you, especially when I'm upset." She scoffed. "You know what, Klaus? Leave. Go back to Artemis, to Hayley, to your city. You say you should have placed me first, but we both know that it wouldn't have happened anyway."
He was shocked at her words and couldn't keep the apparent hurt off his face. He knew he hurt her deeply. "Caroline…" He shook his head. "I will kick Hayley out of the compound. I will give Marcel his title back. I just need you by my side. I don't want to be without you."
She looked away from him. Caroline had to admit, she loved when he tried to make things up for her, but she hated when he turned from the gentle man he was with her to the monster he acted like with everyone else. "I can't, Klaus… I just need time to heal." She turned her back on him and walked to her room.
Klaus hung his head in shame and walked to the front door. He spoke knowing she would hear, "I love you, my sweet," and walked out.
