Chapter 3

A few hours later Birkhoff's alarm went off signalling that they would be landing soon. He unwrapped his arm carefully not wanting to disturb Alex who was still fast asleep. He got and changed into his jeans and a brown plaid shirt with a white t-shirt. He want to the bathroom and combed out his now short hair and brushed his teeth.

When he came back he saw Alex groggily opening her eyes. "You know. This is the second time in the past two days that I've woken up to your side of the bed being empty." She said yawning.

Birkhoff chuckled and sat on the bed next to her. "I promise, the rest of this weekend will make up for it." Alex smiled and grabbed the front of his shirt pulling him into a kiss.

He didn't waste any time in kissing her back, she pulled him closer until she fell back against the bed and he was hanging over her. He placed his hands on either side of her body supporting himself. She brought her hands into his hair, running her fingers through the short strands.

Although it was hard to think Birkhoff realized that they would be landing soon and needed to get ready. "Lex, we have to get ready." Alex however ignored him and continued to kiss him.

"Not now Birkhoff." She said.

After a few more minutes of kissing despite Birkhoff's best effort they pulled away from each other.

"We really have to go. We'll be landing soon." He said breathlessly leaning his forehead against Alex's.

Alex reluctantly nodded and scooted out from underneath him giving him one last kiss as she grabbed her bag and went into the bathroom. Moments later she came out dressed in blue skinny jeans with a dark purple plaid shirt that Birkhoff had given her. She would never admit it to anyone but the plaid had actually grown on her. She was wearing a pair of converse with her hair done up in a pony tail.

"We'll be landing in the next few minutes so we should probably sit down." Birkhoff said once he finished putting the bed away.

They sat down in their chairs and prepared for the plane to touch the ground. Only then did Alex open the planes window. There in front of her was the Effile Tower. Her head wiped to Birkhoff who was nonchalantly siting there with a smile on his face. "You surprised?" He asked.

The smile on Alex's face made her glow. He knew she had always wanted to go to Paris but had never really had the chance. He had been planning this trip for about three weeks. He had them staying at one of the nicest hotels in the city and had dinner reservations at "Le Tour D'Argent" for Alex's birthday dinner which was tonight.

It was about eight in the morning local time so they still had the whole rest of the day to hang out and go see the classic Paris sites. He also had them lined up for a tour of both the Louvre and the Muesée D'Orsay. Their plane landed and the two of them got off the plane hand in hand. They walked outside where Birkhoff quickly flagged them a cab, he knew he could have gotten them their own private driver for the next few days but he thought this might be a little more practical. A cab pulled over and they placed their luggage in the truck.

Birkhoff helped Alex into the car before getting in himself and in perfect french asked the taxi driver to bring them to the Royal Oriental Hotel.

Alex looked at him with an eye brow raised in curiosity. "Since when do you speak French?" She asked.

"I asked Michael to teach me. So for the past about two and a half weeks he's been helping me out. I would have asked Nikki but then she would have wanted to tell you." he said simply leaning back.

Alex looked at him with a wide smile, she reached over and took his hand in hers, lacing their fingers together. The drive into the city was long but spectacular. They went past dozens of French stores and pastry shops as well as famous sights.

Forty-five minutes later they pulled up to a hotel which was two minutes from the Champs d'Elysee. Birkhoff walked with Alex into the hotel while a bell hop grabbed their bags out of the trunk. Birkhoff walked up to the front desk and was greeted with an older looking man.

"How may I help you?" he asked kindly.

"We're checking in. The reservation is under Seymour Birkhoff. For two nights." He said taking out his credit card. The concierge typed a few things into his computer, scanned his credit card and then handed Birkhoff his card back.

"Very well sir. Room 2116. Enjoy your stay." Birkhoff thanked the man and he and Alex headed over to the elevators.

They step in and punched the key for floor 21. When they got to their floor they step out of the elevator and headed towards their room. Birkhoff inserted the key into the electronic look and pushed open the door holding it open for Alex. Alex walked in and just about passed out when she saw the room she was standing in.

There was a large open living space along with a 75 inch TV, the bedroom had a king size bed with silk sheets and an ensuit bathroom that had a walk in shower along with a jacuzzi in the corner.

Alex turned around and threw are arms around Birkhoff's neck. "Birkhoff this is amazing!"

Birkhoff wrapped his arms around her waist and smiled. "I'm glad you like it."

She pulled back from him, still smiling. "Not that I don't mind being spoiled, but what are you up to?"

Birkhoff chuckled at her. "You really don't give up do you?" Alex smiled and shook her head. "Well you'll just have to wait and see. Now come on. We have a city to explore."

Alex grabbed his hand an pulled him out I the room back towards an elevator like a kid dragging their parents down the stairs on Christmas morning. The first place they stopped at a cafe called La Durée, next they went and spent the day exploring various museums. When they got back to the hotel They were both laughing their heads off.

"I can't believe you did that!" Alex said as she walk through the door.

"It's not my fault she should have been looking where she was going." Birkhoff said between laughs.

"Seymour she was like 80 years old and you total took her out when you tripped over your own feet." Alex continued to laugh as he sat down on the bed.

When she by Birkhoff quickly grabbed her waist and pulled her down on top of him. Alex leant forward and gently kissed Birkhoff. He was about to kiss her back when his alarm went off.

"If you're not careful I'm going to throw that thing out the window." Alex said, regretfully pulling away from him.

"I know, I'm sorry. This is just telling us we have to get ready to go. Come on. I'm sure you'll love where we're going." Alex looked at him curiosity while she left to go get dressed.

When she came out Birkhoff had his back turned to her while he tried to finishing tying his tie. she quietly came up behind him and took the tie from him. She quickly tied it and tightened it around his neck. "Never had much use for a tie eh?" she asked chuckling.

"Not really yeah." Birkhoff turned around and started at Alex. She was wearing a simple black knee length dress with a pearl necklace and her hair was done up in a messy bun with a few curls framing her face.

"You look... fantastic." Birkhoff said as he continued to stare at her.

Blush crept onto Alex's cheeks. "Thanks, you look pretty good too."

Birkhoff smiled as he walked over to her and give her a light kiss. "Now come on. If we don't leave soon we'll be late."

Alex nodded, grabbed her purse and held Birkhoffs hand a they walked out the hotel room.

"Birkhoff this is one of the nicest restaurants in Paris what are we doing here?" Alex asked once they were seated at a booth.

"Can't I do something nice for my girl on her birthday?" Birkhoff queried

"You can." Alex nodded as she took the menu handed to her. "But nice is going to a restaurant in downtown New York, where we normally go for my birthday." She started. "Flying a girl to Paris and taking her to a five star restaurant makes it seem like you're about to tell me you ran over my dog." She informed him

"You don't have a dog." Birkhoff pointed out.

"I know that but I'm saying if I did." Alex said slowly. "I like dogs." She added as the thought entered her mind.

"Did you have one growing up?" Birkhoff asked

"Papa thought pets were a distraction so no, but my friend had a lhasa apso and she was the cutest thing in the world." She spoke with a wide smile.

"Dogs are good company, maybe we should get one." He suggested.

"What about you? Any pets growing up?" She asked

"I had a cat when I was like 5, his name was mittens." Birkhoff recounted

"That's adorable." Alex decided with a chuckle

The rest of the meal with the two of them participating in easy conversation, talking about everything from Alex deciding to do more Human Rights Tours with the UN to Birkhoff having been asked to work for the CIA. After they were done their main courses, despite her protests, Birkhoff insisted that Alex get a cake since it was her birthday. She caved after a few moments and order a chocolate lava cake.

Birkhoff could feel his palms sweating as he discreetly reached his hand into his pocket. He grazed the box with his finger tips before pulling it into his hands and holding it in a firm grip. "That good?" Birkhoff asked Alex when he saw the smile on her face as she ate the cake.

"Very." Alex confirmed as she took another bite.

Deciding it was the perfect moment Birkhoff pushed his chair back slightly and knelt down in front of Alex.

Alex froze and swallowed the piece of cake in her mouth "Birkhoff-"

"Alex," Birkhoff cut her off by starting his speech. "I've known you for four years and even if you have been a pain in my ass somewhere between your beauty, charm and ability to hack a computer I've fallen in love with you. You're my best friend and the love of my life, I don't want a day to go by where you're not at my side. "Will you marry me?" He asked as he opened the box to reveal the ring.

Alex couldn't believe what was happening as she looked down at Birkhoff who continued to kneel in front of her. Not trusting her voice at the moment she nodded silently before cupping his face in her hands and kissing him deeply. "Yes Seymour Birkhoff, I'll marry you." She spoke breathlessly as she pulled back.

Birkhoff gave her the biggest smile he had ever given anyone in his life as he slipped the ring onto her finger. He stood up and took her in his arms, holding her close. "Happy birthday Princess." He said with a smile

Alex returned the hug with a smile as a few people around them started clapping. "Can we go back to the hotel?" Alex asked gently as she pulled back to look at him.

"I think that can be arranged." Birkhoff smiled as he sat back down with her, their hands clasped over the table. When dinner was paid for their finally made it back to their hotel.

As soon as they were back at the hotel they stumbled into their room, quickly slipping the "Do Not Disturb" sign onto the handle Alex then pushed Birkhoff into the wall, causing it to close behind them.

She made quick work of removing his jacket, tie and shirt as he pulled down the zipper at the back of her dress before the two of them fell backwards onto the bed together.

4 MONTHS LATER

Birkhoff woke up as the sun light hit his face as it streamed through the curtains that covered the window. Her turned over and slowly opened his eye only to see Alex propped up against the pillow smiling at him.

"How long have you been staring at me?" He asked before shutting his eyes again.

"Not long, don't worry. Happy Birthday" She said kissing him lightly.

Birkhoff chuckled gently and returned the kiss, pulling her onto his chest as he placed a hand on the back of her head and another around her waist, keeping her pressed against him.

Alex smiled and deepened the kiss, cupping his face in her hands. "As much as I love this and you, we need to get up because I have presents to give you." Alex smiled.

"This is a present." Birkhoff decided.

Alex laughed gently. "Later. I promise." She smiled as she kissed him again before crawling off him.

The two of them got out of bed and headed downstairs to get coffee. They had finally managed to get their own house as Michael and Nikita had left to buy a house in Barbados leaving Birkhoff and Alex to the home.

"Now, I didn't bake a cake for you because god help me I'd burned the house down, but I did buy you a present and a card." Alex said as she moved to turn on the coffee pot.

Birkhoff chuckled gently. "After you blew up my last house I would say that's a good idea." He spoke. "Ow." He complained as he rubbed his arm after Alex punched it.

"I did nothing." She laughed.

She poured them both a cup of coffee adding milk to hers and leaving his black. "Thanks Princess." He smiled.

Alex smiled in return and handed him a small box wrapped in dark blue wrapping paper with a red bow on top.

He carefully unwrapped the box, placing the discarded wrapping paper on the counter. He opened the box an found the newest and nicest iPhone he'd ever seen. It was the iPhone6 so he knew it wouldn't hit the public market for at least another few months. It was gold platted on the back and sides, the words "I love you." engraved on the back.

"Alex this is amazing!" He exclaimed. "Where did you get this? It's not suppose to be on the market for the next like 6 months, and even I wouldn't have been able to get it for at least another two." Birkhoff said surprised.

Alex smiled at him. "I have some friends over at Apple. I know them from Russia, many of their fathers were the big corporate types too so I pulled a few strings and asked around."

Birkhoff wrapped his arms around Alex's waist. "Thank you. I love it." Alex smiled against his neck.

"I'm glad." She spoke honestly as she pulled back from him. "Oh, I almost forgot. Here." She said handing him a simple white envelope.

He looked at it for a moment before breaking the seal. "You didn't have to get me a card Alex." He said as he opened it. He was about to continue when he opened the card and looked down at the picture inside it. He looked back up at Alex who was wearing a knowing smile on her face.

"Is that...?" Birkhoff asked trailing off.

"Yeah," she breathed. "you're going to be a dad." Alex said still smiling as she looked at the sonogram she had placed inside the card.

Birkhoff stepped and wrapped his arms around her waist before he spun her around in a circle. Carefully setting her back down he kissed her deeply. "This is the best news I've ever gotten in my life. How far along are you?" He asked excited.

"About four months." Alex answered as her hands went to instinctually rest over her stomach

Birkhoff looked at her curiously. "Paris?" he asked as his hands rested over hers.

"Paris." Alex respond with a smile.

Birkhoff captured her lips in a kiss pulling her close before picking her up in his arms and carrying her back to the bedroom, coffee forgotten on the counter because the only thing that mattered was them.
