Chapter 1
"But-"
"It's already been done, Arme. The registration forms have been all completed. You will be going tomorrow."
A young purple haired girl, apparently named Arme, seemed to struggle to speak as she sat uncomfortably in a leather chair, staring at the desk in front of her. Across the desk, there sat an uptight woman, well-dressed with an unpleasant frown on her face.
Her mother.
As Arme tried to find something to say, her mother suddenly took her gaze away from the paperwork to pierce Arme with her stare.
"What's the matter? You like using magic, don't you? Well, just go there and use it. That's all you have to do. Am I asking for too much, as your mother?"
Arme tensed. "No, it's not asking for too much. And yes, I do like using magic. Going isn't the problem… It's just that… Well, shouldn't I have had a say in all this?"
Arme watched her mother's reaction, taking care to look steady when their eyes met.
"A say in this? You're only 15, Arme. And you would've said yes anyway. Now, I'm tired of this conversation. I'm pretty sure I made myself clear. Go and pack; you'll be leaving in the morning."
A sigh escaped Arme's lips. She didn't try to argue the fact that being 15 meant she should have some freedom in her choices; she'd given up on that long ago. So she stood up and left the room, and closed the door quietly behind her. Her maid, Cassandra, was waiting outside with a nervous face.
"What did Madam have to say, Miss?" she asked, quietly but urgently.
Arme shrugged; trying to act like everything was okay. "She wants me to go to this camp with a bunch of random people."
Cassandra hesitated before asking when.
Arme couldn't meet her eyes as she answered her. "Tomorrow."
The young maid caught her breath, shocked. "But Miss, that's when…"
"… The Grand Chase starts. I know, Cassandra. What am I going to do?"
"I don't know, Miss. Could you persuade Madam?"
Arme sighed. "Impossible." Her shoulders sagged, a sign of defeat. "I'm going to my room, okay? I need time alone. Can you make sure no one comes in?"
Cassandra waited a moment before softly saying "Of course, Miss."
Arme walked slowly down the grand hallway to her room. As soon as the door was closed behind her, she slumped to the floor. She took out a piece of paper, and read it over and over again.
"…Join the Grand Chase! Warriors are needed! The Queen of Darkness, Kaze'aze, is planning to destroy all of Bermesiah Continent and its people. Easy is not something we interpret. The battle will be the hardest one of your life. Be prepared! Come to Serdin Kingdom at anytime. All classes are welcome. Training will be provided…"
As the words slipped out of Arme's mouth, her vision became blurred and tears streaked down her face. As she buried her face in her arms, she knew that by the time the camp she was going to have to go to ended, the Grand Chase would be no longer recruiting people like her.
All her life, Arme had grown up under the care of her strict mother; someone who Arme believed that had no love for her. She had been cold-hearted ever since Arme could remember. Before, Arme had though since they were part of a magic-casting family, her mother had to be strict since magic was dangerous; because when Arme was 3, she had started using magic without knowing; small fires, lightning bolts, ice spears; even if she didn't want to, and burned down her room.
But even as she matured her magic; so mature, that she had been accepted into the Violet Mage Guild at a very young age, her mother only grew colder. Nothing, not even her daughter's matured magic, not even her high position in the Famous Serdin High Council, not even her grand house that stood with a hundred rooms which had no use, not even the thousands of maids and servants that greeted her each day as she came home, seemed to please Arme's mother.
It was always hard for Arme to be a disappointment. She gave up everything trying to please her mother; gave up everything to see, just once, a smile on her mother's face. Not that it ever had worked.
And just this once, she wanted to have something of her own choice. She'd had enough magic training; it was time for her to use it for something. Something like, saving the world that was crashing down while her mother sent her to endless magic camps.
Arme lifted her head to stare out of her window. She had left it open earlier, and now the night wind was blowing in as the moonbeam shined in. The stars shyly peaked out from the dark sky.
The open window brought one word to her head; Freedom. Then she realized that this was her ticket out of here. A ticket to the real world; something she had been shutting down her curiosity from.
But that would be bad. She had never disobeyed her mother before; nor ran away from home before. She wouldn't do it. There was no way…
But this would be different, right? I mean, yes, she would be running away, but she would be chasing her dream, following her own path as she created her future. Her future, made by no one else by herself.
The thought was so appealing; poisonously sweet, a snake that wrapped her in temptation. She couldn't get it out of her head, and shook her head vigorously in desperation. She started to pack her bag for tomorrow, thinking that focusing on something else would help her forget this wild idea stuck in her head.
Clothes. Staff. Washing utensils. Magic books. Diary. Some food. Money.
Wait, what? Why was she packing food? Why money?
Arme realized what she was doing. She was packing to run away, not for tomorrow. She shivered at the power of subconsciousness, but didn't resist. She silently kept packing, her mind made as she transferred all the items to a more smaller, less heavier bag.
Tonight, the choice she had made would take place. Her fixed future would shift, and she would walk a path that was unclear and disorganized. But she wouldn't regret it; because this was her choice. Hers; and no one else's.
When she was done packing, she threw a cape over her head, which covered everything but her face. She grabbed a face mask and glasses to cover her face, and a hat to cover her hair.
Grabbing the bag, Arme leaped out her window into her first taste of freedom, as the darkness folded its wings around her as if to help her hide.
... xD
So erm, here is the first chapter of the story. What do you think so far? Bad? Good? Too fast paced? Suggestions and comments are welcome!
