Chapter 3: The Merciful Hunter
"Hurry son! You don't want it to escape now do you?" My father hollered at me. I saw it getting away as he yelled to me. The little feather that came from some bird Pokémon kept slipping through my tiny brown paws.
You would think that this was annoying right? Well not in this case. I was having the time of my life. I loved when it escaped from my grasp and it would fly in different directions that you had to really pay attention to where it would go next. I jumped up and swung my paws at it and it was very crafty. It dodged around my paws until I eventually caught it in between my paw pads and I landed on the ground with it still there. Little did I know there was a string tied to the end of it and way above in the trees was my mom with a branch in her mouth and as she yanked it up so did the feather follow out from my paws once more. And once more I wouldn't be able to understand that this was a fun way of learning how to hunt but then again I am too little to understand most things. I just see that a feather is trying to play with me and it likes to get chased everywhere.
I decided it was now or never and I jumped high up and bit on the feather finally catching it as I landed perfectly on the ground like a cat Pokémon. My dad smiled as he saw that I had done what was needed to be done. He looked up and gave a small nod. My mom nodded back and placed the branch down as she bit the invisible string off and threw the twig away from me. That way I wouldn't get hit with a branch when I walked over to my father with the "prey" I had captured.
"That was amazing son! You caught it! I wish I had your special skill. And it only took you three hours to do it. I think that deserves an award." My father humored me but at the same time he wasn't. But how could I tell being only a few weeks old. My father ran to our den burrowed in a grassy hill under a giant tree in this vast forest I called home. As he went inside my mom appeared out of nowhere and started to lick at my cheek cleaning me off and then saying, "You really are your father's son. I'm so proud of you."
I had no idea what she meant by that. I was just messing around with a feather that wanted to play with me. Soon enough my father came back out with a small shiny thing and stood in front of me. He then placed said shiny thing over my head and around my white tuft of fur. He sat down with his chest puffed out and spoke. "Kai, for your accomplishment today I award you with this medal crafted by yours truly."
'In other words it was the Spinarak who made the ribbon out of their silk strings and a Meowth who was willing to part with a gold coin of his.' My mother thought to herself as my dad continued.
"This medal also gives you the title of 'The Best Hunter'. Congratulations!" I was admiring how shiny the medal was until I heard my title that was bestowed upon me. I flinched and looked up at my father with wide baby-doll eyes. He now looked at me with concern, thinking what it was he might have done wrong. I then looked down to the feather that still lay helplessly between my jaws. I started thinking about how my parents were telling me how some humans called hunters would hurt Pokémon or separate them from their families and do terrible things to them. That made me think was I hurting this feather and was its family worried about it. My ears folded down in shame thinking I had hurt the little friend I just made.
But soon I had an idea. If the feather wasn't hurt badly it could still run off back to its family and be happy again. I ran back further down the open area in the forest as father walked next to mother still confused and worried about me. Ever so gently I placed the feather on the ground as I tried to speak. "Home now… you… go… to… mommy… daddy… wait… for… you." Of course I spoke like a baby because I was still too young. But when my parents heard me say what I trying to say they smiled. I nudged it forward with my nose to get it going but it wouldn't move. Mother saw my attempt to send the feather on its way home and got worried that I would think I hurt it too badly or worse. She was about to panic when a neighborly Braviary came flying overhead. "Hey Star," she whispered loudly so he could hear but not me. Star looked down to see the Umbreons and smiled as he swooped down and landed right next to my mom.
"Hello Faith, Jackson. How are you today?"
"Can we ask you a favor?"
"Certainly!"
"Can you whip up a small Gust and send that feather off somewhere without Kai seeing?"
"Oh of course I will. Anything to help out the little guy." Star stepped forward and slowly flapped his wings. Not much was happening until he gradually flapped harder.
At first I thought I hurt too badly that something happened to it as a tear formed on my eye and rolled down my cheek and eventually dripped onto the feather. But soon the little feather was moving slightly and my ears perked a little with hope that it was alright. Soon enough the feather was flying through the air once more. It swirled around me and I twirled after it in circles as I also ran forward before it really flew off and I had to stop chasing it otherwise I would start all over again. The feather soon disappeared in the thick forest beyond the open area we lived next to.
I smiled that the feather was able to return home as Star was thanked and he left without me noticing. I sat there looking out when my parents came to either side of me and sat down watching the same place I was. "Well how about we change that title to 'The Merciful Hunter'," my mother suggested.
"I believe that is a wonderful idea. What do you think Kai?"
I looked up at him and even though I really had no idea what merciful meant I liked the way it sounded so I gave him a big smile of approval. He smiled back and said, "I'm glad to know you like it. I'm very proud of you, son." Emphasizing on the very. I was so overjoyed that I nuzzled my face into his chest and he wrapped his paw around me and kissed my head with a lick behind my ear. My mother got involved and cuddled up to his side and they shared a kiss of their own. We stayed like that for a few minutes as the sunlight slowly grew darker. Not long after the light completely vanished a small yawn was heard. I didn't even realize it was me who yawned because I was too tired to notice.
"Looks like this merciful hunter needs to go to bed," Mother said with a small giggle. My father smiled down at me and picked me up by the back of my neck, careful to avoid the medal that was still on me. He soon reached our den and inside was the oval space with a grass bed woven for all of us. He gently placed me down and then he and mom jumped in with me. Mom reached over to me and gently grabbed the medal, pulled it off me, and placed it off to the side of the bed. My father laid down in the center as my mom went to his right. I soon groggily walked over as I lay next to Dad. Most Pokémon would want to sleep with their mother because she's the one they love the most but not for me. I love both my parents but I love my dad more. Don't ask why even I don't know. All I know is that I have always wanted to be with my father more.
Dad rested his paw over me and placed his head on top to keep me warm. My eyes are closed as I smile more and nudge myself against him, trying to get as close to him as possible. I also heard him quietly hum which I could hear very well with his head resting above me. I loved when he sang to me either when I was hurt or sad or when I was scared or just to help me sleep. I loved hearing him. He had an amazing voice. It's one of the many reasons Mom fell in love with him in the first place. It's probably why I prefer him over Mom. He did sing to me when I was in my Poké egg. He hummed a familiar tune and I could hear the words echoing in my head. It was so soothing and beautiful that I wished that I could stay awake and listen to him sing all night but because it was so magnificent I was asleep too soon. And when I woke up I would wish I never did.
Hope this leaves you tingling with anticipation. Why would Kai say that? Well you're gonna have to find out later because it's not in the next chapter. HAHAHAHAHHHA! Or is it?
