A short bit I found while cleaning out my fic file. Written for the epilogue of "Uptown Girl", but cut because it's not part of the narrative. It still isn't part of the narrative, but it certainly won't ever be worked into anything else I write, so why not post it?

The Epilogue of the Epilogue

Mona's beleaguered, "c'mon you two, since a certain couple couldn't be bothered to cut their own wedding cake, we will have to take care of it ourselves," might have sounded as though all the plagues of humanity were visiting her; but her wicked grin and sparkling eyes conveyed the truth that she was thrilled her daughter and son-in-law skipped out on their own wedding reception.

The kids eagerly joined Mona at the cake.

The attention of everyone attending the reception followed them to the cake. Having a captive audience Mona stated, "since our happy couple have departed, for reasons known only to themselves," the whole party enjoyed quite a laugh at that, "it is up to us to shoulder their responsibility for them." She shuddered at the very word, 'responsibility'. Soldiering on she picked up the cake knife and motioned for Jonathan and Samantha to join her with their hands on the knife. The photographer was poised and ready, amused that he was spared the usual banality of the cake cutting; this one would be an event he'd talk about for years.

The photographer took several snaps from many different angles: the three of them with their hands on the knife, Mona posing with the first cut piece, the kids eating the cake, a group shot of the guests enjoying this unique cake cutting; among others.

When Tony and Angela finally saw the proofs, they were surprised; not by the subject, Mona had told them all about their absentee cake cutting. They were surprised by how much they liked the pictures. Angela chose to keep the photo of her mother and the kids cutting the cake on her desk at work. It became one of her favorite pictures from the wedding, right alongside a portrait of all five of them.
