Prologue:

PART THREE

"We're just waiting on the Head Boy, whoever he may be," Lily Evans said, hoping that it would be Remus Lupin. She happily noted that he was absent from the compartment full of Prefects. "He shouldn't be much longer," she reassured everyone. She knew Remus must be held up with the Marauders, unable to get away too quickly. She wasn't worried. He'd be a great Head Boy. She couldn't think of a better boy to be Head Boy and judging by everyone else's looks, she was sure they all thought the same thing.

Jonathan Parker was a tad disappointed to have not been chosen but the look he gave Lily suggested it would be quite all right if Remus was Head Boy instead. Lily knew the Ravenclaw was more than humble to help out Remus for the year. Lily looked over at the Hufflepuff Seventh Year boy, Michael Hart, who also did not mind to have not been chosen. He was best friends with Jonathan and felt the power wouldn't have felt right being his either. Remus would make a smashing Head Boy, their eyes read as they gave Lily a look before continuing their conversation together.

Her eyes fluttered over to Severus Snape, the Seventh Year Slytherin Prefect. He looked like he had just tasted something utterly vile. However, Severus also knew something Lily did not just yet. He caught her gaze, sadness pooled in her eyes before it was replaced with regret. It clouded her eyes making her emotions quite clear. Severus' eyes held anger for a moment or two before they went empty. He didn't have the heart to look at her with disgust and Lily's heart couldn't bear looking at him anymore.

"Well, I am right here, so you may start now, Evans," answered the voice of none other than James Potter. He was standing in the doorway of their compartment. His hazel eyes filled with amusement. He knew nobody was expecting him and that is why he had accepted the position. Dumbledore had chosen him for a reason. James was unsure what exactly though.

Green eyes shaped like Almonds widened in shock.

Potter couldn't be Head Boy. There must have been some kind of mistake.

Shortly after James entered, Remus entered as well. They both took seats on the left side. James felt like he was bored already but he wanted to make it a fun experience. He did not understand how Remus enjoyed it.

All of the girl prefects seemed to cheer in excitement but the boys had grumbled; all the exception of Lily and Remus. They both did the complete opposite to that of their gender. James smirked up at the one girl who had held his heart for a while now.

"I suggest you close your mouth before your catch a fly, Evans," commented James with humour lacing his tongue. He didn't understand why she was so shocked. He had matured over the years and had decided not to be such a git after all. He took her advice. He was a tad hurt that she hadn't seen this coming.

What could be so bad about him being the Head Boy?

McGonagall had written to him to state that she was proud of him and expected better behaviour and results out of him. He decided to let it go before it really struck a chord in him. He grinned up at the redhead, awaiting her response to his comment.

Anger sparked in the youth's eyes.

What if Lily Evans had never hated James Potter so? What if James Potter had never asked Lily out that first time which had caused her hatred to grow for him? What if he had never fallen in love with her at first sight? What if James hadn't become Head Boy, after all, and instead the title had been given to Remus? What if Lily and James never had a reason to talk in the first place?
