"Oh, hello, Katniss, Gale. Aren't you supposed to be having family day?"

Katniss looks warily at Gale and then back at Madge. She's holding a journal, and she notices that Gale has one, too. The journals look awfully familiar. "Madge…"

Gale interrupts her, "We need to talk."

Episode 1 - Home and Away (part 3)

Madge sits quietly on her chair, trying to take everything she learned from Katniss and Gale in. She was expecting something like this, some sort of connection between her, Gale, Katniss and Darius's families. She suspected that her father knows more about the paranormal world then he let on but she didn't expect him to be too involved. What surprised her the most was the involvement of her Aunt Maysilee.

"Are you okay, Madge?" Katniss asks.

She nods in response. "Yes, yes, just trying to take it all in. I…didn't expect that much, to be honest. I'm shocked…is all."

"That's how Prim and I were too when we found out what Dad was doing," Katniss agrees. "Take your time."

"More people could be dying because we aren't working on this now and she's supposed to take her time?" Gale asks, annoyed. "Really, Katniss?"

The brunette girl glares at him. "Do you know where your dad's journal is, Madge?"

"I saw it once in his study," she replies, "I don't know if it's still there."

"We'll help look," Gale says. "Lead the way."

The three young adults looked around the mayor's study. There are a lot of locked drawers so while Gale and Katniss looks for the journal in the open drawers, Madge looks around for the keys to the locked ones. She knows her father wouldn't bring those keys because only he and Madge have the keys to the study so he needn't worry about thieves.

"Anyone have any luck?" Gale asks. Katniss shakes her head while Madge says "no". He sighs and returns to the bookshelf, pulling out all the books and flipping through them.

A minute later Madge squeals in triumph, "I found a set of keys!" She holds the silver set up for the two to see and then dashes to the drawers. She picks up the set and tries each key until she finds the perfect one. The first four have no luck, just political papers. The last one, however, is empty except for a green string bag. Madge picks it up and opens it. When she sees what's inside, she grins. "I found it!"

Gale and Katniss immediately stop looking in their area and move over to Madge. "It's almost exactly the same," Katniss says. "You think they all wrote in it at the same time?"

"Could be." Gale shrugs. "They all had supernatural journals to keep track of their adventures."

"My dad and Uncle Haymitch couldn't have gone on road trips with your dads," Madge tells them. "Dad was Mayor before I was born and Uncle Haymitch was a drunkard then."

"I think we talk our dads," Katniss suggests. "We need answers. They never told us anything about Mayor Undersee and Haymitch."

"Or Darius's father," Madge adds. "I think he knows a lot about this, too."

"There's a Johnston Cray in some parts of the journal," Gale says, "could that be Darius's father?"

Madge nods. "That's him. And Darius is coming over for lunch. Why don't you both stay and we can have lunch together, plan what we're going to do."

Katniss nods in agreement. Gale is hesitant but after Katniss convinces him that they need answers, and since Darius's father is included as well, they'd need to be together.

Darius sighs in content when he finishes his first cupcake. "That was delicious," he tells them. "The frosting is never a failure. Only the best from the Mellarks' bakery."

Katniss shoots him a look. "I'm sure."

Darius gives her an apologetic look. "Apologies, Katniss." He takes a sip of water before continuing to talk. "So we'll get your fathers together and have them meet with us?"

"Yes." Katniss nods. "We need to know how they're all connected. Dad and Uncle Boone never told us about Madge's family. They all worked together, it isn't fair, if they kept that a secret who knows what other secrets they have for us?"

Darius takes in her words, nodding every few seconds. "We overheard that these latest murders are connected to something they did some years ago. So we're bringing Madgey in this?"

"We're just going to need her help when we talk to them, we don't plan on letting her in this dangerous mission," Gale informs him. "So she's safe, don't worry."

"You'll keep your word?"

"Yes."

"No!" Madge shouts. "I want to help in more than just letting them talk. I want to be a part of this. Darius, you told me I could help! I want to help! I also want to feel the thrill."

"Now, Madge," Darius starts, "I know I said you can join, and yes, you can, but once it becomes too dangerous, you're out."

"But, Darius—"

"Madge," he warns, "we're only worried about your safety."

"Safety? I've been safe my whole life! And I'm twenty-three, I think I can make my own decisions." It makes Gale snicker. "What's funny?" she asks daringly.

Gale shakes his head. "You just reminded me of what Vick said last night."

Madge turns back to Darius. "Please?"

The red-head shakes his head. Katniss puts her chin on her palm. "I think Madge can help us."

Darius looks at her. "No. I don't want her at risk."

"I think Madge can take care of herself," Katniss replies. "And it's only fair that she works with us. If what I'm thinking is correct then Madge has hunter blood in her. It's pretty much her destiny."

"Don't say that," Gale snaps. "If being a hunter is our destiny then so will it be for our siblings. I don't think you'd like Prim to be a hunter."

"You know I don't mean it that way, Gale," Katniss says with narrowed eyes. "I'm just saying that Madge is like us. And if she wants to become a hunter," she shrugs, "she doesn't have any siblings."

Madge beams.

But Gale counters, "Just yesterday you said it was too dangerous."

"Before I knew she's a born hunter. Gale, it can't be helped. Why do you think she's always wanted to join us? No one in their right mind would want to join us in what we do. Looking for Peeta in God-who-knows-where and fighting off all these paranormal stuff."

"I get a say in this, too, you know," Darius speaks up. "And I say no."

"You can't hide me from who I truly am! It's like you're blocking me from being me," Madge tells him. "I want to be a part of this, Darius!"

"Madge, I'm not letting you go on a dangerous case. Women get murdered."

"And who knows if I will get murdered? What if there's a pattern in there? And what if I don't fit the pattern? I can help! I know a lot about these paranormal stuff, too, you know."

"I know. But—"

"I'm joining and none of you," she looks from Darius to Gale, "can stop me."

After some moments, Katniss speaks up, "See? She even has that hunter spirit."

Later that night, while they wait for Boone Hawthorne, Gray Everdeen, Hayden Undersee and Haymitch and Maysilee Abernathy, the four sit around the living room in silence.

Madge, wanting to thank Katniss for siding with her, breaks the silence by whispering to her.

Katniss nods. "You're welcome. I agree that this thing is dangerous but I think you deserve to be part knowing that your father was part as well." She pauses. "Do you think things would have been different if Peeta didn't disappear?"

"Maybe," she replies. "I don't know. It…depends…you and Gale…I think you guys were born to do this."

The brunette nods again. "You're right…I guess we'll never know. Maybe Peeta would've been part, too. And you, if you and Peeta convinced us enough."

Madge giggles. "I think I would like that. It's my dream to travel with you guys." She looks at Gale and bites her lip. And for Gale to think I'm not just the mayor's daughter.

"Madge?"

She turns back to her friend. "Yes?"

"You spaced out for awhile."

"Oh, I'm sorry. What were you saying?"

"Do you know what time your dad would be home?"

"I told him to come earlier than usual since Uncle Haymitch and Aunt Maysilee will be here. The two of them should be here—" the doorbell rings "now."

Seconds later, when they hear someone open the door, Madge hears her Aunt calling for her. "Madge?"

She stands up and sees her Aunt. "Aunt Maysilee!"

The two hug before greeting each other again. "How've you been, dear?"

"I'm fine," she replies. "How are you?"

"Good, good." Maysilee nods. "I'll just go and greet your mother, all right? Are Haymitch and I on time?"

"First ones to arrive."

Once Maysilee is done greeting the others she heads upstairs and it's Haymitch's turn to greet his niece. "Don't worry, sweetheart, I don't reek of alcohol."

Madge smiles. "And how are you, Uncle?"

Haymitch shrugs. "Got any food around here?"

"Don't you want to wait for Dad?"

He raises his eyebrows before stumbling over to the couch. "What's so important about this?"

"It'd be better if everyone else is here," Katniss says.

"Everdeen," Haymitch acknowledges. "Anyway, does Hayden know that their parents are coming?"

Madge shakes her head. "He wouldn't approve."

"Your damn right he wouldn't. Margaret Undersee, do you have any idea what you're putting yourself in?"

"Not really," she admits. "But it's always been my dream—"

Haymitch groans. "Dream or not, this is not a matter for you to be putting yourself in. It's dangerous!"

"I know that, Uncle! But I can't run from it. It's in my blood."

Haymitch narrows his eyes. "Tell me, Madge, if a doctor had two children, will they both be doctors, too?"

"Um…probably not."

"Exactly, you can still run from it. Don't be like us. We both know that none of us will agree to do this." He pauses. "Except maybe Maysilee."

"This conversation is over," Katniss interferes. "It'd be better if we all talk about this when everyone is here."

"Just trying to make sure it's not too late to change her mind," Haymitch mumbles.

"Why are you two here?" Hayden demands.

Boone cocks his head. "Didn't you invite us?"

"No," he replies. "You know how I feel about all of us getting together, especially with my daughter in the house."

Gray sighs. "I think it's our fault. Boone and I showed Katniss and Gale our journals. I didn't know they'd read it word per word."

Hayden takes a deep breath. "And they talked to Madge?"

"Looks like it."

"This isn't good," Hayden says. He looks over at the living room where his daughter is talking to her friends. "The only one missing is Johnston."

"Um…sir?" someone interrupts them. "Mr. Johnston Cray is outside. He said you invited him?"

The mayor's eyes widen.

"Just tell them the truth," Haymitch orders. "They already know a lot. And it looks like you'll have to convince your daughter not to join the clan."

"I will never allow her to become a hunter. She's my only child, my daughter."

The servant clears his throat. "Sir…Mr. Cray?"

Hayden sighs. "Send him in." He turns to the others. "I don't want Madge getting mixed up in any of this!"

His brother-in-law snickers. "Too late for that."

The Head Peacekeeper walks hesitantly towards the mayor and his friends. "You want to see me, Mr. Mayor?"

"I didn't. My daughter arranged a meeting for all of us."

"Oh…oh dear."

They all walk to the living room and Mr. Undersee clears his throat. When the younger hunters look up, he just stares them down.

Madge laughs nervously. "Evening, Daddy."

"To the conference room. All of you."

Everyone settles in the conference room, around the large circular table. Madge makes sure she sits as far away as she can from her father and puts herself in between Katniss and her Aunt Maysilee. Beside Maysilee is Haymitch, then Boone and Gray, in the very middle is the mayor while Johnston is on his left, next to his son who is beside Gale and Katniss.

"Don't worry, hun," Maysilee assures her niece, "I'll be by your side all the way."

Madge nods just in time as Hayden asks, "Well?"

"I told Katniss about my journal," Gray starts, "I thought it would be helpful, and I'm sure it will."

"I told Gale about it," the daughter speaks up. "It's his right to know. Then he told me that he remembered Uncle Boone having one that looked similar."

Gale is next to speak, "So I asked Dad about it and he showed it to me. Rory and Prim were talking and Vick and Posy were playing."

"So much for family day," Darius mumbles.

"We decided to read them together," Gale continues. "And we saw a lot of mentions of Hayden Undersee and Haymitch Abernathy, sometimes even Maysilee Donner. When Madge mentioned Darius, we connected him with Johnston Cray."

"I don't think it was a mistake to go to Madge, Mayor Undersee," Katniss says, "I think she could help."

"I don't want my daughter in this," Hayden proclaims. "I don't want her to live her life this way. I made sure that she would never experience what I did."

"You're a hunter, Dad?" Madge asks casually.

"I was a hunter, Madge," he corrects. "Not anymore. My family didn't come from a line of hunters like your mother's, the Everdeens or the Hawthornes since I was in the political side but I when I was saved by Gray's father years ago I wanted to be one."

"He met your mother in college," Maysilee begins. "Madeleine didn't want to get involved in the paranormal stuff anymore so when she quit, he immediately asked me if I could join. It cost a bit of a rift between me and Mads since they were already together. When we met Haymitch, well," she grins, "things weren't complicated between me and my sister anymore. But then she got sick so I had to quit because I wanted to help take care of her, but Hay squared continued."

"We met some friends along the way in the other districts," Haymitch continues for her. "Here in Twelve, we met these two lunatics," he gestures towards Boone and Gray, "worked together lots of times when it comes to cases here or at least close by. Sometimes, we'd even work with our friends from other districts. And before that nosy Peacekeeper became Head he was always snooping around on our cases. We decided that we could use him so we told him the truth."

Johnston chuckles. "The first few times I didn't believe them, of course, but in the end, there was always some sort of proof."

"So being a hunter is in my blood," Madge says a matter of fact-ly. "I'm like Katniss and Gale."

"Yes but I won't allow you, Madge," Hayden orders.

"Who's there to stop me?"

Gale smirks.

"Let her do what she wants, Hayden," Maysilee interferes. "You and I both know that when you've got hunter blood it's inescapable."

"I'm sorry, Maysilee," Hayden snaps, "but you don't have any children—let alone an only child, a daughter—to know how I feel about this."

Maysilee becomes quiet and Haymitch gives him a dark look.

"Dad, I've done everything you wanted! Let me—"

"Is it too hard to want my one and only child to be safe from harm? Do you know how many times we all nearly died because of this job? How many times Katniss and Gale have a near death experience while they're on the road? Look at Peeta, he's not a hunter yet he's missing. Probably captured by some demon and using him as his host or something!"

Katniss's eyes darken at the mention of her missing boyfriend and Madge instinctively grabs her hand.

The room becomes quiet.

"Sir," Darius's deep voice suddenly echoes around the room, "if I may ask…what are the three murders about? We overheard that you took care of it years ago?"

But Hayden is still fuming about the thought of his daughter out hunting. So Gray speaks up. "Yes. Years ago, we encountered a case similar to this. We believe the murders are the work of the Boogeyman."

"The Boogeyman?"

"Our first time investigating," Boone speaks, "we found out it was the pet of a witch in that high school. She wanted revenge so she ordered it to kill those who did her wrong. When we defeated the witch we all thought that the Boogeyman went down with her…but now I don't think it did."

"But who is he killing now? What's the connection?" Gale asks.

"We don't know yet."

"We doubt the witch is on the loose, we killed her," Gray tells them.

"Another witch?" Darius suggests.

"Maybe," Haymitch says slowly. "Think you three can investigate? With Johnston on our side, we can get pass anything."

The Head Peacekeeper narrows his eyes. "It's like you're taking advantage of me all over again."

"Who says I wasn't?"

"Yeah, Dad, let us in this investigation. For once, be a cool Peacekeeper."

"I am a cool Peacekeeper," Johnston defends. "As long as none of the other Peacekeepers are on guard then you three can get it in."

"Okay, we'll start tomorrow," Katniss says.

"I'm coming with you," Madge tells them. "I'll meet up with you in the school where they all came from."

"No, Madge!" the mayor bellows. "Twenty-three years of keeping this so that you won't have to live a life like me will not go to waste."

"What if I want to live a life like this, Dad?"

Haymitch whispers in his wife's ears, "That niece of ours even has our brains. She's off her rocker."

"It's not surprising," Maysilee whispers back, "Hayden was like that, too." She takes a deep breath. "Hayden, let Madge join, let her experience something she wants. If you're going to hold her back from doing this then how else will she face the world? Once a hunter is hunted, they'll always be hunted. You know that. You were a hunter. Madeleine was a hunter. Haymitch and I are still hunters." Everyone turns to look at them. "You know that at one point in time, they'll target Madge."

Hayden turns pale, paler than he usually is. "I was denying that…I thought that…by not letting her grow up to be a hunter…"

"You thought wrong, Hayden," Maysilee says with determination.

Gray and Boone nod in agreement. Hayden wipes his face with his hand, sighing and muttering words they couldn't understand.

"Madge has the right to do this," the older blonde continues. "You remember what happened to Adam because John kept it a secret. I know he did it to protect him, to live a good life, but it wasn't enough."

Hayden nods in agreement. "I just can't take that…that Madge wants to hunt. It's just so different when it comes to your children. She's my only child. I'm afraid of losing Madeleine, I can't afford to lose her, too."

Madge tries to stop the tears that threaten to fall. She wants to do this. She needs to this or else she'll blow. "Please, Daddy, let me go on a hunting a trip."

There's a moment of silence before the mayor sighs in defeat. "All right."

Madge squeals in delight, jumps off her chair and runs to give her father. "Oh, thank you, Daddy!"

Later, when the younger hunters leave the room, Maysilee confronts her brother-in-law. "Are you prepared for when she asks if she could join Katniss and Gale?"

Hayden purses his lips. "I-I don't know."
