Author's Note: Looks like the team doesn't have a choice! By the way, am I the only one who thinks that Aunt Cass looks like Eslastigirl from the Incredibles? Anyway, I hope you enjoy!
Hiro trudged through the streets, wiping dew off of his clothes. The sky was turning a light shade of blue, indicating that it was early morning, probably around 5 O'clock. Hiro looked around the empty streets, noting an occasional jogger here and there. There was no way Aunt Cass would be up this early, especially since the café didn't open until 7. If she hadn't gotten up at any point last night (which was a strong possibility, since she was on allergy medicine), then she might not even realize that Hiro hadn't been home! Hiro kept his fingers crossed.
Of course, there was no way that he could hide just how tired he was. He could feel the lack of sleep weighing down on his bones, as well as the residual effects of the knockout gas that was used on him not once, but twice. Hiro vaguely remembered hearing a lecture from Agent Hanson about how important it was that no one knew their location and then something about funny colors. The next thing he remembered was waking up in a park with his friends and a deflated Baymax. Would it kill them to give him a warning?!
Sighing, Hiro realized that of course they wouldn't give him a warning, that would not only be disadvantageous to them, but it would also be nice. GIRI didn't do nice, that did efficient. Even if what they did was for a good cause (Hiro still had doubts), they wouldn't blink an eye if they had to sacrifice a few people to accomplish their goals. That's why they mentioned the fire in their note, it got them there quickly. They had no remorse.
Working for them was going to suck.
Would Tadashi have made the same decision? Stopping people from hurting others was helping people, but Hiro also remembered how apprehensive Tadashi was when Krei offered to purchase Hiro's microbots for his own interests. If GIRI was corrupt, was it a good idea to give them a group of heroes?
But Hiro had some more immediate problems to work on. After carefully sneaking back inside the garage, lifting the door slowly to keep Aunt Cass from waking, he brought the deflated Baymax over to his desk. 'We'll return your robot to you without alteration.' Yeah, Hiro wasn't going to take their word with that.
Placing Baymax on the charger station, he watched with tired eyes as the robot re-inflated. Soon black eyes opened sheepishly, and a voice and tone that was 100% Baymax introduced himself. "Hello, I am Baymax, your personal health care provider. I will scan you now."
Ignoring the diagnosis of 'lack of sleep' and the recommendation that he 'get some rest,' Hiro opened the access port, taking out both the green health care chip and the red karate chip. Baymax stopped talking, shut his eyes, and stood still. Gee, that was eerie.
Hiro plugged both chips into their docks and opened two tabs, one for each chip's coding. How was he going to have time to go through both chips thoroughly, find some kind of way to find the cameras that GIRI set up in their house and café, and finish the homework that was due today before he had to be in his first class at eight? That left about three hours until Western History (which was he class that he really didn't appreciate, since it had absolutely nothing to do with robotics). At least he was luckier than Wasabi, who had a paper due when Hiro's first class started.
Hiro jerked his head up, realizing that he read the same line five times without taking it in. Maybe some coffee was in order.
….
Fred stretched and yawned in front of his porte d'entrée (that's French for front door). He pulled out a shiny key that somehow seemed fascinating when he was this tired. Once the door opened, he dumped his suit by the door, knowing Heathcliff would pick it up later. "I'M HOOOOMMMMMEEEE," he called.
"Hey, son," a voice from the parlor called. "How did the confrontation go?"
Plopping down on the opposite couch, Fred laid back, staring at the ceiling like this was a therapy meeting. "Well, you know how the note seemed like it came from a super villain?"
His father chuckled; it was a sound that brought back memories that made any distance somewhat bearable. "Oh son, I have received many anonymous notes from villains, and let me tell you, none have sounded as pretentious as 'At the location of the fire.'"
Fred let out a little laugh, but it didn't feel right. His friend, one of his best friends, had died in that fire. He had felt furious when he discovered that note. But he brushed it off. "You should have seen the sender! You couldn't even understand what he was saying half of the time. He was all, 'Preposterous evil flamboyantly calamitous people are residing in this admirable dwelling place of ours.'"
His dad laughed. "Well, what happened?"
"The team and I met up at Hiro's house to plan, but then they hacked into his robot and then we were all knocked out and then we woke up in this room that didn't even have a door handle. By the way, we should totally get one of those for our house. How confused would a burglar be if they couldn't even find a lock to pick! They would be like, 'Wha – "
"And what happened next?" his dad interrupted.
"Well," Fred continued, a little hurt that his dad didn't listen to his idea. But, he guessed that the story was a little more urgent. "These agents, the pretentious dude I told you about and this scary lady, told us that we had to work for them because they know who we are. And then they told us about this crime leader that they've been tracking, and they want us to do it ourselves!"
His father looked a little thoughtful after that. "And you're excited about this?"
That seemed like an odd question. "Well, yeah, a little. I mean, this could be a big step for the team. We could find out about villains quicker and easier."
"So, more efficiently?"
"Um, yeah," then something clicked. "Hey, that's the word they used about fifty times last night."
"Yes, they like that word a lot. More than helpful, more than moral. Just whatever's most efficient."
"You know about GIRI?"
He nodded. "I prefer their sister agency, which is why I like to spend the majority of my time in our home in New York." Fred felt a little pang at that. Sure, it was Fred's decision to stay at their San Fransokyo home, but he still didn't like the distance that their multiple homes had caused. "GIRI might have the same mission, but they have different methods."
"Oh," Fred said, a little disappointed. "But, I mean, we can't just… not try to take down a super villain. Wouldn't that be like, shooting the messenger, or some metaphor like that?" Fred could feel the lack of sleep slowing his brain.
"True, but have you considered that they might be domesticating your team?"
"What?"
"Think about it, an extensive agency that somehow doesn't have enough time to take care of something that is an obvious and urgent threat? It would fall in their spectrum. It's their job to take care of it. They got your team involved because they want to keep you on a tight leash. They like control, and this way, they are killing two birds with one stone."
Oh, Fred thought. Well, that argument made sense, but there was another option. "Or, the extensive agency is already spread thin and they are well organized enough to know that they need extra help if they want to make sure that their job is done right."
His dad didn't look like he bought it. "Well, whatever happens, just keep on the lookout."
"Don't worry dad," Fred said, standing up. "No one is going to ruin my team."
…
"Hello, I am Baymax, your personal health care companion. I will scan you know."
Rubbing his face with his hand, Hiro let out a satisfied sigh. Anything other than basic health care procedures now required a password. Once he was with his team again, he would make sure that the password also used voice recognition. Only he and his friends would be able to open his access portal or get him to add or delete anything from his database. That, along with his new antivirus and software protection, made Hiro feel a little more relaxed.
"– lack of sleep can also make a patient more prone to injury through trips and falls. You should –"
"Yeah, yeah, believe me buddy, I know." Hiro glanced at the clock, which said 7:14. Crap. "But one thing real quick, can you scan the building for cameras?" Immediately regretting his choice of words, he realized that if there were cameras on him now, they would have heard the question.
Baymax tilted his head. "I am not programmed to locate inanimate objects. I have no way to detect them."
Hiro groaned. If the cameras were giving a live feed, then they would have to be using the internet connection. Maybe if he could find the network, he could use it to find the local source.
All thoughts were pushed to the side as he heard footsteps overhead and a voice yelling 'HIRO?'
Yanking the scattered armor off of the floor, Hiro ran to the corner of the room and deposited the evidence of last night's adventure in the corner and pulled a tarp over it, making a note to move it later because that was probably the most obvious hiding spot in the room. "Hey! Aunt Cass!"
The door opened and the red-eyed Aunt Cass made her way into the garage. Looked like her springtime allergies hadn't gotten any better overnight. "Hiro? What're you doing down here so early? You haven't been working all night have you?" She looked at his clothes, which Hiro realized were the same ones that he had worn yesterday.
"Um," he wanted to say 'No' to make himself seem like the kind of man Tadashi was, but a 'Yes' would go a better ways to explain the way Hiro would probably be acting the rest of the day. "Yeah! You know me! Always going above and beyond!"
Aunt Cass gave him a questioning look. "Hiro, you're a bad liar when you're tired."
Hiro suddenly felt awake and terrified. His stomach also appeared to be missing.
Aunt Cass got closer to him. "You weren't out bot fighting, right?"
"No! Aunt Cass, I haven't done that since," Hiro paused, still not really comfortable mentioning it. "Well, you know…"
Aunt Cass's red eyes widened with sympathy. "I thought so, Hiro. I just wanted to make sure you were okay."
Her eyes turned to Baymax. "Does this have something to do with Baymax?"
"Hiro has created an antivirus and software protection system for me. He also wants to perfect my scanner to allow me to detect inanimate objects."
That was not something Aunt Cass was suspecting. "Okay, either you're not a good truth teller, or I'm not getting the whole story.
Before Hiro could say anything, Baymax turned his head to the side. "I have no recollection that Hiro has done anything other than update me this morning. I have not been activated since Wednesday."
Okay, that was wrong. Maybe they hadn't messed with the coding, but something was clearly off with the memory. There went Hiro's hope that Baymax had been able to scan his captors and would be able to locate them.
Aunt Cass seemed to notice Hiro's distress. "Is he malfunctioning?"
Hiro nodded, it was somewhat true. "Brought him down here after his started saying weird stuff, and I can't figure out what's wrong with him."
"Oh," Aunt Cass ran a hand through her hair, "What kind of stuff?"
"Oh," Hiro's mind ran blank. He couldn't say what Baymax really said last night, since Aunt Cass would probably freak out and call the cops. "Um, I can't remember, I haven't had a lotta, you know, sleep."
Aunt Cass put a hand on his shoulder. "Well, I'm sure you will be able to figure this out once you've slept."
"It is true," Baymax added. "Sleep does improve brain function."
"Thanks, Baymax."
"You know," Aunt Cass started. "Tadashi would be really proud of you. You know, how you're saving the world."
Hiro felt his guts twist. She didn't know. She wasn't supposed to know.
"I can't wait to see you present Baymax during the spring showcase. Everyone is going to love him."
Hiro tried to nonchalantly let out the air he hadn't realized he was holding in. "Yeah, it only seems fair that my brother gets the recognition he deserves."
"And you know that you'll be able to fix whatever problems Baymax has by then, right?"
Hiro nodded. "I just wish Tadashi could have gotten the chance to present it himself." He hadn't planned on saying it, but the thought came out of his mouth at the same time it entered his brain.
Aunt Cass rubbed circles on his back. "Me too." There was a long, comforting pause. Both Hiro and Aunt Cass stared at Baymax. Tadashi encoded everything he cared about into the robot, letting it continue his mission of helping people in his absence. Hiro was grateful for it, but it still wasn't fair that his brother was gone.
"You know," Aunt Cass said after a while. "I remember when your mom was pregnant with Tadashi."
Hiro waited for her to continue, appreciating any information about Tadashi or his parents.
"Both of your parents wanted kids for the longest time. But, of course, when your mom got the radiation poisoning at work, they didn't think it was possible. And when she did get pregnant, Tadashi definitely wasn't supposed to be the bright, handsome man he grew up to be."
Hiro wrapped an arm around Aunt Cass. "He liked proving the universe wrong."
"Yeah, you're right." Aunt Cass smiled. "I know he didn't get all of the time he deserved, but I am so thankful for the time he had."
Hiro looked at Baymax. If anyone deserved to defy nature and get even a small window of life, it was Tadashi. "Thanks, Aunt Cass."
She kissed him on top of his mop of hair. "I'm going to go back to bed. Mrs. Silver is taking over the café today until I look human enough to not scare the customers away. I think it might be more productive for you to sleep than to go to at least your first class today, especially since you complain about it being too easy for you."
Hiro didn't tell her that he on purposely complained about it being easy so she would be less likely to nag if he missed school. "Yeah, you're right."
"Goodnight!"
"Goodnight!"
Hiro looked around the garage, deciding that everything could wait for an hour or two. Unfortunately, his phone decided to buzz just as he reached the door.
"Gahhhhh, leave me alone!" He pulled it out of his pocket and checked the screen. Honey Lemon's perky smile made him groan. She was probably awake for a reason, especially since she had afternoon classes today. "What?" Okay, that sounded harsh. He hoped he wasn't that rude when he was actually awake.
"I just talked to a victim," her accent was heavier with lack of sleep.
"What?"
"A victim," Honey said louder, mistaking a 'What' for an 'I can't hear you.' She did tend to assume the best in people. Tadashi was the same way. "You were right, it was a psychiatrist."
Hiro then remembered the case they had been working on before GIRI and crime lords got involved. "How do you know?"
"I found a weird set of tracks and I followed them. I'll send you the pictures in a moment." Honey was always good at documenting evidence.
"Where did they lead?"
To a woman hiding in her shed. She said that she was attacked by a giant spider."
Please take a moment to tell me what you think!
