Chapter 2: The Four Elements

Looking back on things, Alex probably wouldn't have guessed that his memories were returning judging from the fact that he was now entering into the Avatar State right in front of Katara, it was always a strange sensation going into the Avatar State. It only happened at times when he and his friends were in great danger. He could see no reason why this girl, this apparent stranger standing in front of him was any sort of a danger.

And yet there was something about her, something about this Katara that made Alex feel something that he hadn't felt in a long time. He didn't know it then, but he would soon find out that her friendship would mean something. He didn't notice at first but whilst he was regaining his lost memories, people were running about and trying to find their best way of looking at him without being harmed. Katara had also ran off, maybe she was scared? And after all who could blame her, Alex was feeling pretty scared during the moment.

Various images raced through his mind, discovering the TARDIS with Sky, meeting Ahsoka in the cantina, the adventure on Dareen. The Weeping Angels, Skaro, the trial on Shili, Trap Street, the Spirit World, the Battle of the Brothers, loosing Sky, Darlene leaving. The pain of these memories his journey overwhelmed him until the shining light died and Alex came out of the Avatar State, panting and sweating, he felt like he had just lived through a second life. But as a different person. "Whoa!" He gasped as he recovered his breath.

"Whoa," Alex span around and found Katara again standing in front of him, she looked just as shocked and terrified as he was, he couldn't blame her, after what he just went through, nothing would ever be the same. "Yeah," she chuckled although a little more halfhearted "I think Whoa is the correct reaction for something like that." She looked around nervously and said, "So, Alex. It seems like you're not such a stranger after all, can we talk somewhere private?"

Without thinking Alex nodded, Katara smiled and the two of them walked side by side, not looking back at the Water Tribe villagers that were staring at them, which was all good by Alex's standards he got plenty of that back on Coruscant, especially when he was with Ahsoka, suddenly Alex halted mid progress at the thought of his girlfriend. Ahsoka, Oh, god. How could he forget her? How could he ever forget her? She must be worried out of her mind. "At least she's safe." Alex said to himself so that Katara wouldn't hear him, then again was Ahsoka ever really safe? With only Charlotte Black as company? At this Alex smiled to himself, Ahsoka was probably fine and thinking up a plan to bring him back home.

He caught up with Katara as she neared a small house, again shaped like an igloo, although unlike the last one, this appeared to me more looked after, "My father is away," she explained as she sat in front of the door, "he's chief of the tribe, helping out with the peace talks." At this Katara smiled, it was nice to see her smile, Alex thought, it reminding him of the way Ahsoka smiled. "The only one here is my brother."

Alex wasn't at all interested in this, he was just more interested in getting back to the TARDIS, if the TARDIS was even here that is. Surely Ahsoka must've found a way to send his ship to wherever he was? Thinking of an idea he reached down into his pocket and looked for something. An item he carried with him at all times, a tiny silver key the only thing that allowed him entry into his ship, it usually glowed a unique shade of gold whenever the TARDIS was nearby however at the moment Alex found disappointment when the key remained its usual dull silver.

Having no choice but to stay with Katara, the only person he knew here Alex pocketed the silver key in case he needed it. "Who is Ahsoka?" Katara asked him unexpectedly, Alex stared at her this was a question he wasn't expecting to answer. "You kept saying that name whilst you were sleeping." Suddenly she looked away and blushed, "I checked on you every once in a while." Once she composed herself Katara said, "I helped to heal your injuries." Suddenly she reached for a water container that was strapped to her belt, removing the lid but not holding the container, she made a gesture with her hand and a rush of water encircled it.

Alex gasped at this and Katara smiled, he felt his face and found that his scars were indeed fully healed, even the one that used to reside on his left eye. He had seen what Katara was doing, in fact he himself had used this particular ability before, only by the guidance from a Tablet that he got from a crazy man. That was a long story. "I've seen that before. Done that before." He struggled to get these words out.

Katara giggled at this and said, "we call this ability, Waterbending, it is the ability to control one of the Four Elements, in this case Water." With another gesture Katara sealed the water that currently encircled her hands into the container, "I," she sighed with a great sadness, "am the last Waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe."

"You said that there were Four Elements?"

Katara nodded, "Water," she gestured towards the container, "Earth, Fire and Air." She paused wondering whether or not to divulge this information, but for some reason she found herself explaining, "These are the Four Elements, and as an Avatar you have the ability to control them."

"So you know that I'm the Avatar then?"

"That display was pretty hard to miss," Katara chuckled, "though I don't understand how you're presence is possible." She looked around like people were listening in on their conversation, "when there is another Avatar here." Okay this piece of information shocked Alex, another Avatar? Here? Of course he knew about other Avatar's having met one or two during his trips to the Spirit World, but to actually be able to meet one who was not a Spirit? "Who are you?" Katara asked him struck by an air of awe.

"Believe me," Alex said as honestly as he could answer, "I have been asking myself the same question for the past 3 years." And At this the two shared a laugh, although he couldn't place the odd feeling then, Alex was sure by now that he and this Katara person were going to become really good friends. Most of all, he wanted an opportunity to meet this other Avatar she spoke of, he was quite glad to have met Katara and all but is was this Avatar he was most interested in meeting, Alex needed answers and the only way to do that right now, he thought was to do the one thing he never thought was possible, to see if he could make new friends and to put his trust in people he barely knew..
