Ch. 3
Itachi and the others had returned to the classroom a while ago and just like in the morning, Glenn had been lazy and made it into a self study. Itachi had no problem with it as he had learned most of the material during his spare time and figuring out how things worked in this new world he had been placed in.
The others around him, not so much. He did help those who came up to him and asked him for help, but there were some who were getting irritated by Glenns' laziness and not doing his job as a teacher.
Especially the lavender haired girl, Sistine, who had just gotten out of her seat and made her way towards Glenn.
"I belong to the noble Fibel family of mages, which has significant influence with the academy." Sistine said as Itachi noticed Rumia trying to stop her but failed "I could have you fired if I advise my father of such!"
Glenn swiftly sat up straight. "Huh? Really?!" Glenn asked
"I'd rather not resort to that! But if you refuse to correct you attitude as a teacher, which Itachi, who is a student has been doing better than you..."
Glenn stood and now stood in front of Sistine as he took her hand in his and brought it up. "Please tell your father I'm counting on him!" Glenn said as Sistine was shocked at his response "Ah, great! Great!" Glenn brought his hand behind his head and smiled "Now I'll be able to quit! I took this job against my will and under a threat, but I knew it wouldn't work!"
Itachi watched as Sistine removed her glove and threw it in Glenns face. Itachi slightly smiled and waited to see what would happen. 'A magic duel, huh? What will you do now, Glenn?' he thought.
"Now it's getting interesting." Gibul, the brown haired glasses wearing boy who sat on Itachi's left said
"Can you accept that?" Sistine said challenging him
"Are you serious?" Glenn asked
"I am." Sistine said
Rumia stood up. "Sisti! No! Hurry up and apologize to him! Pick up your glove!" Rumia told her best friend.
"What is it that you want?" Glenn asked
"Please correct that bad attitude that you've shown us, and teach class responsibly." Sistine answered
"You haven't forgotten, right? If I win, then you'll have to accept my demand." Glenn said
Itachi stood and walked down the few steps and picked up Sistine's glove from the ground. "She's well aware." Itachi said as he placed the glove back on her hand "She's the next head of the Fibel family, she cannot just sit by and watch, Glenn. The look in her eyes, show everything." Itachi now faced Glenn "Now, are you going to keep stalling? Or will you accept her challenge already?"
"You know, you've been somewhat talkative lately." Glenn said staring into Itachi's onyx eyes "She's going to be happy." Glenn turned to face Sistine as an image of a woman with longer hair but same color as Sistine's came to his mind as he sighed "Good grief. I can't believe there's an antique still alive using these old customs. Sure, I'll accept your duel."
The class had walked out of the classroom and now stood in one of the yards outside of the school as Glenn and Sistine stood a good distance apart from each other.
"However, even I have my reservations about injuring a brat like you." Glenn said, hands in his pockets as he was feeling overconfident "So the only spell we'll use is Shock Bolt. All others will be prohibited. That okay?"
"The challenged reserves the right to decide the rules of the duel. I have no argument." Sistine replied
"Is he giving her a handicap?" Teresa, a girl with long purple hair and green eyes questioned said as Itachi overheard the other students talking
"It's true that Shock Bolt is an all purpose spell. It's one of the rudimentary basics we learn first. It's a defensive spell that uses electricity to paralyze and disable your opponent." Gibul said as he began explaining "The chant is three lines: 'Thunder Sprites, pay heed, and strike with your electric shock.' But in actual combat, the match is determined by which opponent can shorten it to one line and chant it faster."
Itachi looked to his side and saw that Rumia was holding her hands together looking at Sistine worriedly.
"Do not worry." Itachi said softly as his words only fell onto Rumia's ears who looked up at him "He won't hurt her."
They had missed when Glenn told Sistine to come at him whenever she wanted as Sistine broke down the spell and chanted it quickly.
"Thunder Sprites, Shock!" Sistine chanted
Sistine held her hand out towards Glenn as a purple magic circle formed on her hand and purple lightning shot from her hand towards Glenn. Itachi watched the lightning close in on Glenn who had his eyes closed but had a smug grin on his face. Glenn held his hand out and got electrocuted as he shouted in pain, before he hit the ground.
"Huh?" Rumia said
"Told you." Itachi said letting out a small sigh
They watched as Glenn stood up and said it was a three round match as he was then shocked again, but he kept standing back up stating he was fooling around and that it was actually a five round match.
"Hey look over there!" Glenn pointed to the side as Sistine followed the direction he was pointing "You fell for it, Idiot!"
"Thunder Sprites, Shock."
Glenn tried deceiving Sistine by fooling her, but she quickly caught on and shocked him again.
"Sensei, can you...not chant Shock Bolt in one phrase?" Sistine asked as Rumia walked next to her side
Glenn stood up, legs wobbly. "What are you talking about?! For starters shortening a chant is heresy! I'm not saying that because I can't or anything, either!" Glenn shouted
"Anyway, I've won this duel. So as I've demanded, starting tomorrow you'll-"
"Huh? Did we promise anything? I don't know what you're talking about!" Glenn said as he then pointed at her "More importantly, you're not half bad! Today, I'll cut you some slack and all it a super close call!" He laughed as he then looked at Itachi who didn't seem to care but then saw his hand spark a bit "It won't be next time, though! Farewell!" Glenn turned to sprint but slipped then got back up and ran at full speed.
"I believe it's time for us to go home." Itachi said as he began walking away
"Itachi." Wendy, a girl with mocha brown hair which is kept in high pigtails using a green ribbon for each and also the girl who sits to Itachi's right during class called out to him as he stopped and turned to face her "Do you want to hang out with the rest of us for a while?"
"I'm sorry, but I must be getting home." Itachi said
"Maybe we can walk with you part of the way?" Wendy questioned
"If she were to see me walking with girls, she'll get the wrong idea and not stop pestering me about it." Itachi said out loud to himself but was overheard by the others
"Do you mean your mother?" It was Rumia who spoke this time.
Itachi looked at Rumia. "You seem to have the wrong idea." The wind blew and Itachi's bangs covered his eyes before he moved them out of his face "My mother is dead."
Rumia's eyes widened as she then looked down. "I apologize, I did not know."
"There's no need to apologize." Itachi said turning around and walking away 'I should be the one apologizing to my mother.' Itachi looked down at his hands as he imagined blood on them 'Sorry, Kaa-san.'
Itachi was now home as he walked into the kitchen and saw Glenn eating.
"You didn't even try." Itachi said as he poured himself a glass of water
"I wasn't planning on hurting a brat." Glenn said stuffing his face with food
"Hn."
"So, how was your fist day?"
Itachi and Glenn turned to face the woman who made them attend the academy, Celica Arfonia.
The Next Day
Half the day had already passed and just like the day before, Glenn had not done a thing. Itachi would read and help the other students when needed. Itachi was helping Wendy when they saw Lynn walk up to Glenn with the book asking for help.
"You're wasting your time Lynn." Sistine said now a few feet away from Lynn "You shouldn't be asking that man. He doesn't understand a thing about the greatness or value of magic."
This had gotten both Glenn's and Itachi's attention who was now standing next to Rumia.
"Is magic really that great or valuable?" Glenn asked in a bored tone
"I wonder what you might say. Magic is the study of this world's principles. The origin and structure of this world, the rules that govern this world...Magic reveals those to us and answers the eternal question of why we and this world exist. It's the means by which humanity can discover the path to a greater plane of existence. That's why magic great and valuable."
"What use is it. Exactly what use is there in studying the principles of this world? And what is the higher plane of existence? Gods?" Glenn questioned as he looked at Itachi who was listening to every word that was exchanged
"What kind of benefit does magic provide humanity, anyway? Just look at the medical field. It saves people from sickness. There are many fields that benefit humanity, like agricultural science and architectural engineering. But is it just my imagination, or does magic provide no benefit at all?"
"Magic isn't about something so lowly as benefiting humanity, it's about searching for the truth behind this world and humanity itself." Sistine said
"Sorry about that. I was lying." Glenn said as he stood from his chair "Magic is incredibly useful...for killing people." he said as most of the class gasped slightly "Listen up. In the same time sword arts can kill one person, magical arts can kill ten people. Right, Itachi?"
Itachi narrowed his eyes at Glenn and slowly nodded. "Yes." Itachi answered 'Same goes with chakra.'
"There's no other field that excels so much at killing people." Glenn said
"Quit joking!" Sistine said
"Both now and in the past, magic has had an inseverable link with murder. Magic is a good-for-nothing field that advanced through killing people!" Glenn said his voice rising
"No! Magic is not about that!" Sistine said her voice cracking a bit
"I honestly can't understand what all of you are thinking. Studying this field that's only good for killing other people..." Glenn said
Itachi looked at Sistine who was on the verge of tears. "Glenn!" Itachi slightly raised his voice but Glenn did not listen
"Instead of devoting your life to something so foolish, you should-"
Itachi saw, they all saw as Sistine walked up to Glenn, tears forming in her eyes as she slapped him across the face.
"Why you..." Glenn said as he turned to face her
Tears started to pour down Sistine's face as she looked up at him. "I hate you!" She said as she ran out of the room crying.
"Sisti!" Rumia said as Itachi moved out of her way so she could run after her
Itachi walked up to Glenn, eyes narrowed as they looked into Glenn's. Both were around the same height, Itachi being sightly taller. "You went too far." Itachi whispered as Glenn just looked into his eyes not speaking a word "You're going to have to apologize to her later."
Itachi turned away from Glenn and looked at the class. "What Glenn said...wasn't entirely false." Itachi said as the students gasped "But magic isn't only used for killing others. It can be used to save lives and help others who are in need." Everyone listened to Itachi. "It all depends in how and what you use magic for."
It was now evening and the sun was setting as Glenn and Itachi were on a school rooftop.
"I was the one being the brat." Glenn said
"Hn."
"Okay, i'm through with this job." Glenn said as he stretched
"You better practice groveling when we get home." Itachi said now standing on the ledge
"Yeah, if I apologize hard enough, Celica should forgive me." Glenn started walking as Itachi followed on top of the ledge as Glenn stopped and noticed Rumia in a lab room "What's she doing?"
"She's been trying to construct magic circles." Itachi answered as he too looked at her "I noticed her since she entered the lab."
Itachi and Glenn made their way back into the school and towards the lab Rumia was in as Glenn shoved the door open, scaring her in the process.
"Personal use of this lab is prohibited, you know." Glenn said walking in Itachi right behind him
"Glenn-sensei!" Rumia then noticed Itachi walking in after him "Itachi! I'm sorry. I just wanted to review how to construct magic circles. I'll clean up right away."
"It's alright. See it all the way through." Glenn said
"It's not working right." Rumia said
"Baka. You're just short on mercury." Glenn said as he saw Itachi was already on his way towards them with the mercury "You all get sensitive so easily about things you can't see, but for whatever reason you neglect what's in front of you." Glenn said looking at Itachi who was pouring the mercury around.
"It proves that you consider magic more sacred than it really is." Itachi said as he had finished "There. Try activating it again. Use five phrases, just like the text book says. Don't shorten it." Itachi leaned against the window seals
"Okay. Cycle, cycle, oh origin of life. Form your path within the circle of truth." Rumia chanted as the magic circle began to glow the colors of the spectrum "I've never seen such a beautiful magic circle before." Rumia smiled.
"Don't be stupid. Anyone can do this much. Besides, most of it was your doing." Glenn said as he remembered when he was a young boy trying it for the first time.
Itachi was looking at the magic circle and smiled as he then looked up at Rumia. "Beautiful." Itachi said as Rumia had locked eyes with his right before he spoke.
Itachi saw as Rumia's cheeks turned a shade of red as he rose a brow, then looked at Glenn who was looking at him with a smirk on his face. Itachi now understanding the situation and the misunderstanding.
"The Magic Circle." Itachi said
Glenn walked up to him and wrapped his arm around his shoulder and chuckled. "Of course you did." Glenn smirked which made Rumia blush a bit more and Itachi to narrow his eyes at him before looking away.
After cleaning up the magic circle, the three of them walked out of the lab and were now walking towards the exit of the school.
"Glenn-sensei, you actually love magic, don't you?" Rumia asked
"He does." Itachi said
"What makes you say that?" Glenn asked ignoring Itachi's comment
"Well, you looked like you were having fun back there." Rumia answered
"No way. I hate magic."
"Is that so?" Rumia lightly giggled and smiled as she then looked at Itachi "So what were the both of you doing before you came here?" she asked
"I was a freeloading shut-in!" Glenn answered
"Studying and helping." Itachi answered
"Huh? Shut-in? Freeloading?" She questioned as she stopped walking
"There's a haughty woman named Celica at the academy, right? I've been sponging off of her and Itachi for the past year." Glenn said as he and Itachi both stopped as well
Rumia looked back at Itachi. "So you and Sensei live together." It wasn't a question. "No wonder you two seem so close. Also, What school did you go before here?"
"Yes, we live in the same household and I didn't." Itachi answered not commenting on him and Glenn were close, Celica would see them as siblings, Itachi being the more mature one and Glenn being the care free one.
"Huh?"
"I was home schooled by Professor Celica Arfonia for the past few years."
"What about before that?" Rumia questioned Itachi
Itachi's eyes were locked in with hers as Glenn looked back at them. Itachi motioned her to get closer with his hand as she moved forward and her forehead was met with a jab from his two fingers. "Sorry, Maybe next time." Itachi smiled at Rumia.
Glenn eye brows both rose as he had never seen Itachi show anyone any type of affection before or give someone a real smile.
Rumia brought her hands over the spot that Itachi had lightly jabbed as she looked up at him and here eyes slightly widened. It was her first time seeing him truly smile. Her cheeks turned slightly pink as she too smiled at him and nodded.
"Don't bother asking him about his past, he hasn't even told me about it. So, how about I ask you a few questions." Glenn said now leaning on the ledge of the path "Why are you all so frantic when it comes to magic? You take a dumb thing like magic way too seriously."
Itachi's eyes turned to look at Glenn. 'Would you still see me as a friend or comrade after learning my truth? Or will you see me as a threat and try to kill me as well?' Itachi thought as he looked back at Rumia.
"I want to make magic beneficial to mankind in a real sense. To that end, right now, I want to understand magic more." Rumia said looking at Itachi then out into the sunset "There's someone I'd like to repay a debt to."
"What do you mean?" Glenn asked
"Three years ago, when I was banished from my home, right around the time I started living with Sisti, I was captured by evil mages and nearly killed. That was when a young mage of Justice came to my rescue. He took care of the evil mages one after another. It was terrifying." Rumia said as she remembered the past event and Itachi's eyes slightly widened "But after that young man saved my life, I realized...I want to be in a position to lead humanity so it doesn't lose it's way with magic." Rumia stood straight tilting her head slightly up looking into Itachi's eyes, aquamarine meeting onyx. "To do that, I'll need to understand magic better. And if I follow that path perhaps one day, I'll be able to thank him for what he did back then."
Glenn watched the scene and even though he had asked the question he continued watching Rumia speaking about the mage who in fact was standing right in front of her and looking into those eyes.
"The man who gave me light when I was crying alone in darkness..."
"You-"
"What is it?" Rumia jumped slightly and smiled at Itachi expectingly
"Nothing." Itachi said as he started walking and Rumia lightly smiled
Rumia and Glenn followed after Itachi.
"Also, Sensei? Please apologize to Sisti later. She feels a bond with her late grandfather through magic. So it's important to her."
Itachi and Glenn walked Rumia to her house where she lived with Sistine and Sistine's family as they waved and parted ways before Itachi glanced back at Rumia making sure she made it in safely.
Glenn noticed and was about to say something when Itachi's narrowed gazed looked him in the eyes and Glenn gulped. "You went too far."
Glenn groaned. "I know! I'll apologize! Now stop looking at me like that!"
They made it back to the house they lived in as they were greeted by Celica who was in the living room reading a book.
"You two are finally home. What happened?" She questioned
"Glenn made Sistine Fibel cry." Itachi said
Celica sightly turned her head and rose a brow.
"Itachi showed affection and gave a girl a real smile." Glenn said
Celica's book was now down and she was up off the couch. "Tell me what happened!"
