Chapter 3
Few weeks later they moved closer to the coast far away from the turmoil of Paris, the city where she had spent many happy days during her childhood. But that world was now gone. The whole of Versailles had become a memory of something distant and cold. Therefore Oscar´s family had left there a long ago.
Together with her husband she had bought a small manor where they were now settling. They didn´t have money for a large manor, anymore. And why would they even have a huge manor? They had only couple of servants, those who had persisted to stay with them. Everything had changed, and it was now dangerous to show once position, in any case. Not that she was afraid. She was practical.
Her family had lost huge amount of their fortune since the Revolution broke, and the Revolution itself had gone wrong, so terrible wrong. For awhile she had thought that Robespierre had been right and that his intentions were good. After all, he had been after the equality of the people.
But soon she had noticed that the Revolution had gotten out of hands, and people were accusing each other, neighbours were blaming neighbours, old friends were turning against each others, and many families had been broken apart. The Royal Couple had been imprisonment and the King had met his end at the Guillotine.
And what about her family? Most of her sisters together with their families had left the country and settled down somewhere else. Most of them in Austria. But Oscar couldn´t abandon her country; she was born here and here she was going to die, too.
She was now sitting in a chair thinking about her father, they had finally settled their arguments. He had gotten angry because she had abandoned the Royal Couple and even stormed into the Bastille itself. He had cut all the ties with her, until recently. Because now he understood her, and he had forgiven her. The time of the Louis 16th was gone, along with the nobility who once supported him. And perhaps, her husband might have influenced on his decision to reconcile; the desire of having a grandson was too powerful, and now that Oscar finally finding a man she loved…who knew; maybe they would soon have a baby…
