Title: Driver's License
Disclaimer: I do not own anything.
Character(s): Youko, Rei
A/N: Even I was confused at the end. I don't know how half of this thing came up.
Summary: And then Youko slammed her foot on the brakes once again, and Rei's body was almost flung in the air. Thank Maria-sama she was wearing a seat belt. "I think you've been spending too much time with Sei-sama." "Oh? Is that your way of saying you don't want to be the Yumi to my Sei?"
Sometimes Rei wonders how she gets into these situations.
It had all started relatively normal. She had awaken to a bright day, months after her 18th birthday, made breakfast for both her and Yoshino, and taken a stroll in the park. There was absolutely nothing out from the ordinary about this day. Well, except for maybe the part where she was currently stuck in a car with Mizuno Youko of all people. Youko was currently driving, and Rei can honestly say she have never been more afraid in her entire life.
She had never thought that both Sei and Sachiko had gotten their driving skills from someone. Or is it the other way around? Either way she is suddenly very afraid for Shimako and Yumi.
So there she sat, holding tightly onto her seat belt. And judging by the look on Youko's face, she doesn't realize that her driving is shaving years off of Rei's life. Rei jerks forward, her seat belt catching her as Youko stomps on the brakes.
She lets out a sigh of relief when she realizes the cause was a red light and not because they were going to crash. It is surprising that they were not pulled over yet, considering how they were more than likely completely and utterly driving over the speed limit. It's possible the police didn't notice. It's also possible that the police had tried and failed to catch them.
She doesn't know which is more worrying.
As she looked for an escape route, she stole a glance at her driver, only to be met with a hopeful face.
"So? What do you think?"
"T-think about what?" She really hope her upperclassman wasn't suggesting what she think she was.
"That cloud over there, it looks like a walrus don't you think?" Eh?
Rei turned her head and peered at what Youko was pointing to. As she expected, it was a cloud... shaped like an owl.
"It looks more like an owl to me, Youko-sama." An owl that looked a little bit like a tea cup.
"It looks very similar to a walrus as well right?"
"...Not really." She was trying. She was really trying to see it.
"Not even a little?"
"..." The red light was taking a really long time.
"...At least tell me it doesn't look like a polar bear." She really wasn't understanding what was happening.
"Well-" Her sentence was cut off as Youko slammed on the pedal, and the car raced forward. Rei stiffened and tighten her grip on whatever it is she was holding. Her emotions quickly changed from confused to terrified as if she was inside a cliche horror and was about to die. That comparison didn't make things any better.
"Sorry. What were you saying, Rei?" The look on her face was too innocent. Rei swore that she interrupted her on purpose. She glanced in front of her and almost had a heart attack when they nearly collided with another car.
"The cloud doesn't look like a polar bear at all!" The slight smirk on her face widened, and she nodded her head slightly in satisfaction.
"Youko-sama, is there a reason why you kidnapped me in broad daylight?" Now was a good time to ask as any.
"Kidnapping is such a strong word, Rei. Isn't there any way to rephrase that?"
An image of her walking in the park flashed through her head. The image seemed to obtained a life of it's own as it progressed through the event. To put it simply. a car had driven up to her, opened it's door without even stopping, and proceeded to drag her along her the ride until she was fully inside the car.
"Abduct?" Snatched? Forcefully taken against her will? Seize?
"...That not what I had in mind either." Capture? Taken hostage?
"No matter how you look at it I was kidnapped." Youko coughed into her hand and focused on the road.
"Anyway, I wanted to spend some time with you. Is that a problem?" Was that a blush on her face?
"I don't particularly mind. But we don't usually spend time outside the Yamayurikai."
"Hmm."
They lapsed into a silence as Rei tried to imagine herself cooking for Yoshino. Anything to take her mind of this hellish ride.
"I'm in love with you, Rei." What?
She was about to respond until she saw Youko's face. It was overflowing with curiosity, waiting to see how she would react.
"It's not nice to joke around like that, Youko-sama."
She laughs without remorse. Rei can't help but compare her to a cat, prideful, playful, and plays around without guilt. Well, she was sort of cute like this, laughing freely. Rei glanced at Youko and decided that she was willing to endure a little bit of teasing and embarrassment for this joyful laughter. The type of laugh that was more of an evil cackle, but was still able to remain lady-like. Smile appeared on her lips, her body relaxed as she listened. It was almost enough to make her forget that she was inside a speeding car and that the current driver was not paying attention to the road.
And then Youko slammed her foot on the brakes once again, and Rei's body was almost flung in the air. Thank Maria-sama she was wearing a seat belt.
"I think you've been spending too much time with Sei-sama."
"Oh? Is that your way of saying you don't want to be the Yumi to my Sei?"
There was nothing to be said about that comment.
"You don't have to be so tense around me, Rei."
"It's your driving that's making me like this."
"But you're usually tense around me anyway, aren't you? Out of the Yamayurikai, we are the ones who have the least amount of interaction. Is it so wrong of me to want to know you better?"
"Why now? Don't you have to focus on college, Youko-sama?"
"Well, I suppose you can say I'm lonely." No matter hard she may have tried, Rei couldn't dismiss the strange inflection in her voice, but before she open her mouth, Youko spoke again.
"Do you enjoy being in my company?
"Yes, I do."
"I like you too." A small smile graced Youko's face, and her eyes seem to light up at Rei's answer. It was so adorable and not Sei-like that Rei almost retracted the comment.
"I'm glad. That means you don't mind being around me like this? I can't be like this around Sei." That was news.
"Why not?"
"If we're both troublemakers, we'll end up in jail. A troublemaker needs someone to pay her bails." Right. That was perfect logic.
"I always wish I was able to be though. Being Youko is lonely and tiring. Emotions like that doesn't suit Sei, too many bad memories. So I'm always stuck being Youko."
I sounded complicated and to everyone else it probably was. Rei understands, and she knows that its not good to turn away from reality, but a little pretending couldn't hurt. Youko was too cute to be Sei.
"Ne, Youko-sama?"
"Yes?"
"As I thought, I can't be the Yumi to your Sei."
Her face dropped.
"But I can be the Youko to your Sei."
Her grin was absolutely heavenly.
"Ok, that settles it than, I'll pick you up next week for your driver's lessons."
"...I don't remember agreeing to that."
"You said you'll be the Youko to my Sei. Sei taught me how to drive, and since you're Youko and I'm Sei, I'll be teaching you." Perfect logic indeed.
"What would you have done if I told you I was Yumi?"
"Sei is teaching Yumi how to drive too, you know?" Is Sei's aspiration to teach?
"You were planning this from the start weren't you?"
She just smiles wider.
This only reaffirm that Youko isn't Sei. But pretending couldn't hurt anyone and Youko looks cute having fun pretending to be Sei. So she'll be Youko and indulge her a little. Besides Rei has always had soft spot for cute things and Youko was utterly adorable.
