Usagi shifted from foot to foot in the elevator as it made its slow descent. Zoisite had stopped embarrassing her, at least for the moment, but something about him set off alarm bells in her head. "This is taking longer than it takes to go up."
"That's true," Zoisite answered. "The first floor below is a bit underground. We don't want the normal employees involved with our true business."
"True business?" Usagi scrunched her nose. "What are you talking about?"
"You're so innocent." Zoicsite chuckled at her once more. "I won't give you too much information, but we're more than a supply and distribution company. You could say our goals are far greater than that."
"I still don't understand…" Usagi sighed and leaned against the back of the elevator paneling. "Oh!" She jolted upright and looked at the doors. "We stopped."
Zoisite nodded and as the doors swished open he strode through. "Come on, Angel," he said with a teasing smile.
Usagi nodded then followed after his footsteps. She hadn't expected it to be so dark down there. The corridors weren't made of the crisp clean materials that the hallways above, instead they were made of a black rock with emeralds within. They gave the entire area a creepy green glow. She shivered at the coldness. "I don't think I like it down here."
Zoisite laughed at her again. "You'll get used to it. Keep up, you don't want to get lost down here. The underground is bigger than you'd ever imagine, one wrong turn and we might not be able to find you for a week."
Usagi yelped and jogged to keep right beside Zoisite. "You're really making me not like this place." He smirked at her but didn't reply as he took turn after turn. After what seemed like hours, though it was more like minutes, they arrived at their destination.
Zoisite acted like a gameshow host as he put a hand under the green letters glowing on the door. "Here we are, Angel, Usagi Tsukino's office. This is where I leave you. I have other matters to attend to, and I do want to annoy Nerphrite or my day isn't complete."
"Who?" Usagi felt like she knew less of the office's population than she ever had before.
"I'll introduce you sometime, maybe you can help me come up with a name to annoy him too. I love to upset him, even though Kunzite doesn't approve. Anyway, in with you, go enjoy your desk. I will visit with you soon, Angel."
Before Usagi could interrupt again Zoisite held a hand up to his lips in a laugh and vanished in a flurry of pink rose petals that circled him. Usagi blinked hard and waved her hand through the area where he had once stood. "What's going on?" It was more of a whimper than a question. Half dreading what she would discover next, she opened her office door and walked in. Creeped out from everything, she shut the door with a hard click behind her and took a deep breath.
"It's about time that Zoisite brought you to me." A deep voice resonated from the dark desk in front of Usagi.
She hadn't even been aware she wasn't alone. "Hello?" She whispered as she felt her knees start to tremble. Her fear made her want to sink to the floor and cry for someone to rescue her.
"Hello, Usagi." The shadow reached to a lamp on the desk and pulled a cord comprised of beads. Light filled the room and Usagi found herself face to face with her new boss. His eyes scanned her from head to toe and he smirked as if pleased with what he saw. "I take it you don't like your new office?"
"Oh," the word slipped from Usagi's mouth and she took the seat opposite him, trying to draw as little attention to herself as possible. How much of her conversation with Zoicite had he overheard? "I appreciate the promotion, really I do. I just didn't expect such a drastic change of scenery." She found her hands rubbing her shoulders for warm as she stared up at him.
"If you're cold I can arrange for it to be warmer in here for you. Usagi, you are going to be my personal assistant. I want you to call me by my name, Treize. No Mr. and no other formalities." He smiled in a slow way his eyes twinkling at her. "Do you understand? Because I have no plans than to call you by no other name than Usagi."
Usagi found herself staring at her hands as she clasped them in her lap. When he had spoken about the warmth issue, the room had a sudden wave of heat flow through it. She felt better in a sense, but just as much creeped out as ever. "Yes, Treize." The words felt like lead on her tongue. She didn't feel comfortable addressing her boss by his first name at all. It felt wrong somehow.
"Come now, don't be so scared. I'm not going to bite you. Don't you want to know more about your new position? Ah, and I also have some news for you that you may find interesting, but you're going to have to look at me to hear it." His voice was the chiding tone a teacher gives a misbehaving student.
Usagi could never resist the lure of good gossip. She peeked at Treize with her face just lifted enough that he could make out her eyes, but she kept the rest of her face hidden beneath her clasped hands. "What is it?"
"Now now, all the way, put your hands down. I want to see your face." Treize ordered softly.
Usagi swallowed hard. The way he talked to her was weird. She didn't know if he saw her as an employee or something else. However, she really wanted to know what news he was talking about. She put her hands back into her lap and stared up at him.
"That's better." Treize all but purred as she obeyed him. "You have a friend named Minako Aino, correct?" He only gave her enough room to nod before he continued, "she has been promoted as well. She is Jadeite's right hand as of this morning."
"Right hand?" Usagi cocked her head to the side. The term sounded weird.
"Think of her as his personal assistant, but instead of paper work and parties, she'll be attending other types of events with him. Who knows, I might let you go with them one day if I trust you enough. As for your duties-" he paused to smile at her like a wolf cornering a sheep. "You are to accompany me everywhere I go. All parties, personal events, family dinners with my sister and her assistant. You are required to be there every step of the way."
"Why me?" Usagi forgot her fear and put her hands on arms of the chair to lean closer. "I'm not a very good employee, I'm late a lot. Z always gets mad at me because I'm destroying something or other, I've only met you once before. Why did you pick me?"
"Why indeed?" Treize agreed. He leaned on the corner of the desk and cradled his chin in one hand. "It only took that one meeting for me to decide I wanted you to be the one to fill the position. There is something about you that calls to me, I feel that your -energy-" he paused to stress the word. "Will be something I need very soon. "I have thought about others, but no one else feels right for what I need. You are a breath of fresh air, my dear. You're always full of energy, you bounce back from all the scoldings Zechs gives you, and even when late, you always show up ready to give your all. That's all I want from you, Usagi. I want all of your energy."
Usagi nodded as if she understood. Odd qualifications for an assistant if you asked her, but to each their own she supposed. Besides, she had gotten a very good raise from the promotion so she didn't feel like she could complain about it. "Is that why you were in my office? You were waiting to tell me all this?"
Treize nodded and shifted his position so he was sitting upright again. "That is correct. My sister's assistant will help you gather anything you need to make yourself more comfortable down here. I want you to take your position seriously, Usagi. If you want the smallest thing you have to only lift a finger and it will come true. Anything you desire can be yours as long as you do your job."
Caution left her as she heard those words. "No way, so I can get a triple chocolate fudge sundae with cherries and sprinkles?" She demanded.
Treize smirked and pushed an intercom button on the base of the lamp. He repeated her order and released the button as a predatory smile appeared on his lips. "Anything," he repeated and licked his lips in a slow languid motion. A chuckle erupted from him at her confused look.
"Delivery," a happy voice announced from the other side of the door.
Treize inclined his head. "Go see."
Usagi did as bade and in slow motion opened the door. The boy on the other side grinned at her with an ice cream dish in hand. "Hey, you must be Usagi. My name is Duo, Treize asked me to get this for you." He thrust the dish in her hand and fished out a spoon from his pocket. "It's pretty sweet being an assistant."
Treize frowned at the interaction. "Duo, why are you delivering? Shouldn't you be with my sister in her office?" His eyebrow twitched with each word.
Duo grinned. "Yeah, but I heard your order and since I was in the kitchen I threw this together. Good thing Beryl taught me how to get around faster. One of the youma would have taken forever to get this together for her."
"I see." Treize's words were tight as his fist clenched. "Okay, well then Duo, I suggest you get back to my sister's side for now. If Usagi has need for you, I'm sure she'll call. I've taught her how to use the intercom."
Duo caught the hint and smiled once more at the awe-struck blonde. "I'll see you later, Usagi. We'll probably bump into each other a lot since we're both working as assistants to the siblings." He waved at the silent Treize and smiled. "See you later, Treize."
Treize waited for the boy to vanish before flashing a smile at Usagi. "Any other questions my dear?" He smiled in an amused way as she shook her head with a telltale red stain across her cheeks.
Mamoru stared at the man across from him. It was sad to say, but he fit the stereotypical look of the bad cop type interrogator. He was obese, and kept chewing on the end of a cigar. Every so often he would lean forward and blow a puff of the foul aroma direct into Mamoru's face.
Mamoru started to cough as the man proceeded to do it again. "Boy, you're going to tell me what I want. If you don't you're going to get a lot worse than smoke in the eyes." He took a deep crag of his cigar until the tip turned a blazing red. With a sinister grin he shoved the still lit end into Mamoru's trapped arms.
A howl of pain escaped Mamoru as he lashed from side to side in an attempt to rescue himself. He panted long and hard as the torture was removed and glared at the chuckling guard. "You can do whatever you want to me, I'll never give up my friends."
The interrogator was pelted by a wad of spit as Mamoru showed what he thought of his torture techniques. "You'll regret that." The promise was accompanied by deeper laughter as the man stood up and towered over Mamrou, whom was still chained down into the steel chair. "I don't care if you do talk anymore," He wiped the spittle off his cheek with one beefy hand. "I want to make you howl again." Before Mamoru could react the guard thrust a fist into his stomach and chuckled as the boy fell forward with a grunt of pain. "Music to my ears," he whispered before pulling back for another strike.
"Your security is lax for being a high security prison." Heero had arrived and closed the steel door shut behind him. He aimed his still smoking gun at the guard and with one finger, ended the other's life. He glanced over at Mamoru who was trying to catch his breath. "Where are the keys?"
Mamoru tilted his head in the guard's direction as he coughed again, the action shaking his whole frame. Bits of blood pearled on his lips and he tried to wipe them off with the hem of his shirt. A moment later he found his arms freed and spared a glance to see who had saved him. "Who are you?"
"Makoto sent me." Heero opened the door a crack and peeked outside. The enemies he had taken care of earlier had still not been noticed. It figured that they were so confident in their systems that they didn't even notice the deaths of their own. "Come on," he demanded as he went out the door.
Mamoru had no choice but to follow the strange boy. He paused at the body of the guard and stared down at him for a long moment. The man had bruised his body from head to toe in trying to get him to talk. He didn't think twice about jamming his foot into the dead man's ribs as a sense of justice filled him.
Heero glanced over his shoulder and nodded as he saw that Mamoru was indeed following him. Mamoru was the exact same person that the guardian angel had presented to him. The only real difference seemed to be that this guy was closer to his age than that of a grown man. His fingers strayed to his gun and he tensed. "Do you know, Usagi?"
"Who?" Mamoru tapped a finger to his chin as if trying to recall the name. "I might." He didn't notice Heero's hold on the gun clench as he continued, "yeah, I think that's the name of one of the B&T employees. I heard some chatter from our bug that Treize is interested in her. I'm not sure why, but it can't be anything good." His whole body shivered as if caught in a bad memory. "If she's a friend of yours she could be in real trouble. I've seen what Treize has left of some of the girls he's been interested in before. It wasn't pretty."
Heero nodded. As strange as his dream had been, and as foreign as it felt to care about someone, he felt more convinced than ever that he needed to save Usagi. Mamoru Chiba's words only confirmed his blossoming belief. He didn't know what he was going to do with her once she was saved, maybe just give her to Makoto, but he needed to save her, and that needed to be now.
Author Notes: We're about a chapter away, give or take, from getting as far as I did in the original Yotogi. This is only the first week of the challenge and I had some time sinks that happened that didn't allow me to put as much time as I need to yet, in this story. But, I'm already working on the next chapter, and I know without a doubt that chapter updates will be frequent for awhile. Hope you're enjoying it, because I'm having a blast writing it.
