Chapter Two
Shadowpaw touched noses with Blackmoon; a tall black she-cat. Her ears twitched as the Clan cheered her name.
"Shadowpaw! Slatepaw! Coldpaw!"
She stepped back, tail lashing happily behind her. Coldpaw was beside his mentor; Quailtail. And Slatepaw was also beside her mentor; Cherrypoppy. Both were good warriors, and approved by Dappleheart.
Yet her own mentor Blackmoon, wasn't very..approved by her mother. Though Shadowpaw loved Dappleheart, and wanted nothing more than please the torbie queen, she didn't see what was wrong with Blackmoon.
"Come on, let's not wait any longer!" Cherrypoppy meowed, her bright ginger fur fluffed out. "It's cold and I want to warm up,"
Blackmoon snorted at her denmate. "Ah, just cause your cold?" She mewed, her tail flicking over the ginger she-cats ears.
Cherrypoppy shrugged with a smile. "Well, maybe i'm excited too, but so what? Slatepaw is my first apprentice!"
Blackmoon's ear twitched in amusment. "Of corse, Cherrypoppy. Now Shadowpaw, ready to go explore?" The tall, linky black molly looked down at her.
Shadowpaw shrunk back, but gave a short nod. "Y-yeah!"
The warrior snorted, during to speak with Cherrypoppy again. The small apprentice could already see the two molly's had a close bond. Which was good; taking in the fact that Clanmates should always be close.
"Alright, let's go."
Quailtail lead the way. The big gray tomcat weaving past each mentor till he was in front. The last bits of snow was melting away, and the cold nipped at their ears.
Shadowpaw flicked her tail tip. She didn't mind the cold much. Not like how any of her Clanmates did. I wounder where Joykit is? She'd never been out much during the day. Did Joykit only come out at night, when the stars shined the brightest?
Maybe. The black she-cat lifted her gaze. The patched warrior had paused, sniffing at some bracken. "Look, a rabbit trail!" Cherrypoppy purred, her bright yellow eyes glittering. "Newleaf is coming greatly, with plently of prey following!"
Blackmoon lashed her tail, following Cherrypoppy's pointed gaze. "That is wonderful. But isn't it almost time to head back?" Her mentor glanced up at the sky, shaking out her black pelt.
It's that late already? Shadowpaw smiled. She would be able to see Joykit again! And tell her my new name, not Shadowkit anymore!
"Come along sweetie, before you catch a cold," nudging her side, Blackmoon meowed into her tufted ears, "or before I catch a cold."
Shadowpaw perked her ears, waving her tail she smiled. "Sorry, I was just..thinking to myself!" She quickly followed the worn out trail that her fellow Clanmates had used.
Her paws carried her towards the nursery. But she knew it wouldn't be long before everyone went to sleep. And I can see Joykit again!
"Shadowpaw, what are you doing?" Dappleheart's harsh growl stopped her right before she entered the nursery. "Go to the apprentice's den, now!"
Her mother nipped her ears sharply, but not enough to brake skin. "Sorry mother!" Shadowpaw dipped her head, embaressment burning through her.
Coldpaw greeted her inside the apprentice's den. His icy blue eyes glittering amusingly. "Trying to still sleep inside the kitden?"
"No!" Shadowpaw curled up in a nest. It didn't hold any scent, so she expected it to empty. "I'm going to sleep," she annouced to no-one before tucking her nose into her tail.
