CH 3

It was noon and Sam was still in bed. Her nights had not been smooth. Her bones ached and her head was pounding. Her dreams were filled with the night her and Johnny were attacked. Though she had begun to fall in love with Johnny the life he led was starting to take its toll on Sam.

That night Sam saw a different Johnny, he did was to save her life, but it scared her. While the man had Sam trapped in his grip Johnny shot him in the head...the blood splashed across her face.

Their relationship hadn't been the same since. They hadn't made love since that night. It was hard to open up to him. It sounded crazy to Sam, but even though she had only been seeing him for two months she believed that she loved Johnny. And no matter what fear she felt now, she hoped it would pass.

Sam was happy to be back in PC. She never grew up there, but after she found her biological mother, Alexis Davis, she thought of PC as home away from home. Most of the time Sam stayed in NY, but she would once in a while pop in to visit her mother and young sisters.

It had been a while since Sam talked to her mother. Though Alexis knew she was involved with Johnny, she didn't know about the attacks that Sam had gone through. She wanted to see Alexis while she was her cooped up in PC, but once Alexis sees Lucky…Sam knows that she is going to have a panic attack.

Sam finally hopped out of bed to get ready. It took her another hour to get downstairs, where a very impatient Lucky was waiting for her.

"You said noon" Lucky sniped

"Hello to you too, Detective Spencer" Sam just continued to smile. She had never been one to keep a strict schedule.

"Sam, you said you needed me to be here at noon…and it is now 1:15"

"You keep worrying like that, Lucky, and you will ruin that handsome mug of yours"

"If you think flirting with me will make me forget that you are running late then.…."

"Then what, Spencer?"

"Then you would be right" Lucky and Sam just laughed. Knowing that they were arguing like an old married couple. Sam couldn't remember the last time she just laughed. Nothing had been light or funny since Sam and Johnny came back from NY. Johnny had been on the war path…trying to protect Sam and tracking down the people who were attacking.

"So, McCall, where are we headed?"

"To my mother's house. You probably know her, you being a cop and everything"

"You mom's a cop?"

"No the district attorney"

"You're Alexis's daughter?" Lucky was in a state of shock "She always goes on and on about her daughter from NY, I just never thought….."

"…..That she would be involved with a mobster?" Sam interrupted

"Well….yeah"

"I didn't plan on falling for a mobster, I met Johnny at a party and we hit it off. After a while he told me about his dangerous life, and I just accepted it"

"Well are you ready to go? Ms McCall…"

"Do you really have to call me that?" Sam's face looked like she had just sucked on a lemon

"I don't know, you are the boss"

"As the boss I am saying to just call me Sam"

The pair headed off to the private car Johnny had for Sam. But before Sam and Lucky could get in to take off to Alexis's house, the guards had to sweep the car for any explosions. That's when their good time ended. Both realizing that the situation was too real and dangerous.

Lucky felt for Sam. This life of danger and protection must get to her at times. Love can't always help with fear. Lucky knew that this was more than a fat check or a favor to his brother. It was about keeping this beautiful woman safe, and that was exactly what he intended to do.

The drive was quiet. Sam's head filled with worry and doubt. But mostly she was scared to tell her mother about the attacks. She didn't want to lie to Alexis, but she didn't need her to be worried 24/7. Sam did that enough for everyone in the free world. Sam was also scared to bring this into her little sister's life.

"We shouldn't go" Sam blurted

"Why the sudden change of heart?" Lucky truly concerned

"I want to see my mom, I miss her so much, but I don't want to bring this to her door steps"

"Sam, your mom is a strong person, like her daughter…." Lucky smiled and gently placed his hand on hers "….She needs to know"

A quick jolt rushed through Sam's heart. Like the breath around her was stolen. Realizing that he might be making Sam uncomfortable, Lucky quickly retracted his hand.

"Thanks" Sam added, giving Lucky a reassuring smile.
