Chapter 2: Grief and a Surprise
It was hard having to bury my parents, not many people came to their funerals. A few undercover Auroras to make sure we were safe, Ron, Harry and Ginny came along with Mrs. Weasley, Kingsley and Professor McGonagall other than that no one else. My mother was an only child and my grandparents passed when I was seven and my father's parents disowned us after they found out I was a witch. Only person who was left was my cousin Michael who was my deceased aunt's son, who was the only family I had left. But last time I saw him was when I was eleven before I left for Hogwarts for the first time.
It was after the funeral and the few people who did show up were now sitting in one of my favorite little muggle cafés that was a few blocks from my old home.
"Miss Granger, do you have a place to stay?" Kingsely asked "seeing your circumstance"
"Dear you're always welcome to stay at the Burrow!" stated Mrs. Weasely taking a sip of her tea.
"Yeah 'mione, you can always stay with us" Ginny piped in enthusiastically as Ron nodded next to me.
"Of course my place has extra room too!" Harry insured, I was grateful that they were concerned for me but I was still in a state of shock.
"Thank you all" I said looking into my tea cup, watching the contents swirl absently. It wasn't until a ripple formed that I notice I was crying.
"Oh dear its ok!" Mrs. Weasly cooed reaching across the table to take my hand as Ron patted my back and handed over a handkerchief.
"No its not ok! My parents are gone, I have no one left" I said as more tear streamed down my face. I wasn't sure if I was sad or angry anymore. How could this happen, after everything had happened to us….to me, had I not suffered enough in the war?
"Hermione…dear you might want to calm yourself" professor McGonagall or I should say the new Headmistress stated, catching my attention and gesturing to my tea cup that was now wobbling on the table threatening to either tip over or fly across the room. In the state I was in either was a likely possibility. Everyone at our table looked at my cup then at me then at the rest of the café that was currently occupied by our party along with a group of girls our age, a teenage couple and a family of five.
"I'm sorry!" I said sheepishly, ducking my head and taking a few deep shuddering breaths as I tried to compose myself.
"it's quite alright dear!" she said, before she nodded her head and hummed to herself. After she became the new headmistress at the school, she started to show some traits that Dumbledore use to do, it was as if being cryptic and mysterious came with the title. "ahh here they are I knew they would be late!" she nodded and looked at Kingsley smiled slightly.
"Who professor!?" Harry asked curiously while craning his neck to look out the window behind him, while Ginny and Ron did the same. Just then the bell about the door chimed letting the shop owners know they had new customers, and made me look towards the door to see the one person who had been like a brother to me when I was growing up. There standing in the doorway was my cousin.
"Hey kiddo, long time to see!"
