"It's hard not to see things as beginnings and endings. When someone dies, you want to mark time before or after . . . but time is time. It's a continuous motion, and we divide it into increments to pretend to have some control over it. To make it neat and manageable." - Ask Again Later by Jill A. Davis
Shelby Corcoran. A royal piece of art is what that woman is. She was probably the only person in Rachel's life that the girl hated more than herself. Shelby damaged her, when she needed her; she failed to be a mother that she needed. Yeah she had two dads, but they were never around and a girl is never too old to need her mom. Most of the times when her dads were not home, she wished she had her mom, - maybe then things would not have been so bad. - But all she had was a stupid cup.
When Shelby got the call from the hospital she did not bother asking questions. She assumed Hiram had her as an emergency contact in his wallet. She gathered her stuff and called in her babysitter, - thankfully, the girl understood the situation and had no problem coming in at this hour to stay with Beth.-
The drive to the hospital was surprisingly fast. She was focused on getting to the hospital and sorting out this situation. She did not get many details, only that she needed to get to the hospital urgently. Of course when she got to the hospital she had to wait in the waiting room for God knows how long for the receptionist to do God knows what. Did they not say that is was an emergency?
"Ms. Corcoran, Dr. Hunter," The doctor introduced himself.
"What happened? All I know is that there has been an accident.
Dr. Hunter explained the situation to Shelby. Who just refused to believe that something like this could happen? Her brain tried as best to simplify the news. Hiram Berry was the driver who died on impact. Leroy died shortly after reaching the hospital from his injuries, internal bleeding was the probable cause. And Rachel, Rachel was what they called lucky. Their definition of lucky followed a list of injuries she sustained. There was a gash on her forehead from her head smashing into the window, a concussion, and two cracked ribs. The doctor then went on to explain that bruising should be expected along with soreness.
Shelby was brought out of her thought process when Dr. Hunter started to talk about paperwork, "She is unconscious now, she will wake up in sometime and we also gave her morphine for the pain, we will also be keeping her in the ER for the night just to make sure everything is okay. We also need you to full out some paper work at the front desk," The doctor said.
Shelby was engrossed in the paper work, worrying about Rachel when the doctor gave her an envelope covered in blood.
"This envelope was found at the accident, addressed to Rachel." Dr. Hunter said before leaving and wishing Shelby all the best.
Shelby noticed the handwriting, it was Leroy's. A single tear escaped, as Shelby thought about the two men. Shelby did not have much of a relationship with Leroy, but she and Hiram kept in contact throughout the years as they were both pretty close. Wiping the tears from her eyes, she finished the paper work and made her way to see Rachel.
Shelby's heart sank, when she saw Rachel, she looked so tiny and fragile laying there in the hospital bed, Shelby made her way closer to Rachel, took her hand in hers, gently squeezed it and kissed it. She watched the oxygen tubes in her nose, the IV in her left hand and the wires under her hospital that monitored her heart beat, which was the only sound in the room; she also noticed the blood in her hair from the cut. Shelby watched the steady rise and fall motion of her chest. It was as though Rachel sensed her presence as her eyes began to flutter open.
"Rachel honey, can you hear me? It's Shelby," Shelby said not sure of what to say.
There was a pause as Rachel just looked as Shelby confused.
"You're in the hospital, there was an accident, do you remember?" Shelby asked
She remembered. She remembered everything, the dinner, the divorce, the accident, the crash. Rachel did not ponder on it much as she just realized Shelby was here in the flesh,-what was Shelby doing here? Was not Shelby the one who left her for Beth? The child of the girl who made her life a living hell … Was she the one who was not good enough for her a few months ago. Why was she here? Rachel was surprised that she did not pass her on to social services.
Rachel did not respond she was too tired to formulate words. Her eyes were closing heavy with sleep.
"I'm not leaving you, okay. I'll be here when you wake up," Shelby said, noticing Rachel falling asleep.
Shelby sat in a cot in the corner of the room and began to think. How was she going to take care of Rachel? Was she even ready to take care of a teenager? She assumed it should be easy. Nothing too difficult she hoped. She would try her best to care for the girl, as she was now her only legal guardian. She did not want Rachel to think that she was orphaned, that was the last thing she wanted the girl to think. Shelby was unsure. She did not think she could handle all of this. There was the funeral, the school. Her biggest worry was how she was going to tell Rachel about her fathers.
Rachel slept throughout the night, even when the nurses came to check her vitals. The next morning Shelby made some phone calls, to the school, her parents, and her current place of employment.
"Water," Rachel said hoarsely, causing Shelby to immediately end her current call with whoever she was talking to.
"Slowly now," Shelby said as she brought the cup to Rachel's lips.
"My head hurts," Rachel groaned.
"I'll get the doctor," Shelby said pressing the call nurse button at the side of Rachel's bed.
"Why are you even here? Didn't you leave me for Beth?" Rachel asked.
"Rachel, you're my responsibility now and I admit I made a mistake when I left you, I thought you didn't need me, but now I am here," Shelby said.
"They're dead aren't they," was all Rachel said, that would be the only logical explanation why Shelby was here.
"Rachel please try to understand…"
"Understand what?" Rachel cut off Shelby, "Understand that you only realize I exist because you have no choice but to."
Shelby was about to say something when the doctor came in.
"Hello there Rachel, I am Dr. Hunter, and it's nice to see you're awake."
Rachel just looked at the doctor
"Do you feel any pain?" The doctor asked.
"Yea my head, and my ribs" Rachel said.
"Alright, we will get you something for the pain okay."
"Bruising is expected, and she will be feeling sore for a couple of days, all she needs to do is relax, take it easy and everything will be fine." Dr. Hunter said.
"Rachel-" Shelby tired, when the doctor left the room.
"Please Shelby just leave me alone, please" Rachel said.
"Rach-" Shelby tried once more.
"Please I just want to be alone."
Shelby knew that this was a lot for Rachel to take in so she gave the girl her space.
Shelby still had the envelope. She contemplated on whether to tell her about it or not. Maybe for now she did not need to know about it, Shelby thought as she thought it might be too much for her to handle.
If Rachel thought the universe hated her before, she was sure right as the universe was having a good laugh right now. First it was Santana, her dads getting divorced, the accident, Shelby, now this. Rachel felt as if her whole world came crashing down and nothing made sense anymore. Her dads were gone, and she just felt angry at the world, angry at everyone, angry at herself.
A/N: So what you think? There are a lot of things here to think about, why was Shelby's contact information there? What is Rachel going to do? The letter? Soo many things :). Sorry for taking so long to update I was thinking where to end the chapter and i thought here. Please review :) Reviews mean a lot :).
