Chapter 3:
Donna went to go talk to Sam about the day's plans for Team Three.
Sam asked, "How are you doing, Donna?"
"I'm fine," she replied irritably. "We're patrolling today. I'll take Tom; you can set the rest of them up."
"Copy," Sam said. Then, "Donna… if you ever want to talk, I am here for you."
"Okay, thanks," Donna said, but thought to herself: There is no way I would go to you; you took Marcus' spot on the Team.
Donna then called the rest of the team into the briefing room. "Good morning," she said. "We are patrolling today. Sam is going to set up the partners; Tom, you are with me today."
"Copy that," Tom said eagerly. He was hoping for an opportunity to get Donna to talk to him.
Tom and Donna took the East when the team was dividing up the city's quadrants for their patrol assignments. Sam said, "Brad, you are with Jackie. Take West. Pete, you are with Andy and me. We will take South. "
Together, they said, "Copy that!" and got up to leave for the SUVs.
When Tom walked by, Sam touched his arm and asked him to try to talk to Donna.
In a hushed tone, Tom said: "I will try, but I can't promise anything."
Sam nodded. "I am just asking for you to try," he said. Tom nodded and went on his way.
Donna let Tom drive because she was feeling ill. For a while, Tom let Donna just sit quietly, not pushing her to talk. She was sitting there thinking about everything: the baby she lost; her teammates… She was trying not to cry, and also not to get sick, which would force Tom stop and pull over.
Tom looked over at Donna for a moment, and didn't like how she looked. Concerned, he asked: "Donna, you doing okay?"
Donna said very quietly, "I am fine."
"Okay, do you want to talk about anything?" Tom asked carefully.
Donna said angrily, "No, I don't."
Tom sighed. "Okay. You know if you ever want to talk, I am here: day or night."
"Okay, thanks," Donna said, not sounding very sincere. "Now that's out of the way, let's just keep a look out for trouble."
"Copy that," Tom said, disappointed he'd also failed to get her to speak up about what was bothering her.
Back at the Barn, Ed and Wordy were talking about how to help Donna as they were walking to do drills.
Wordy asked: "Ed, did Sarge get anything out of Donna?"
"No, he didn't. He only got she is very tired and also pissed," Ed replied. "She doesn't know how to put her feelings into words."
"I'm worried about her," Wordy said. "Wish she'd talk to someone. I think I understand why she is angry and I don't blame her. I would be angry, too."
Ed said: "Let's just hope her team has a quiet shift and no hot calls. Her weight loss is another thing that's worrying me."
"Copy that," said Wordy, who'd also noticed Donna's dramatic drop in pounds over the past six weeks.
