-The Thought of Dysentery-

The morning dawned cold and wet in Forks. The grey clouds were streaked with lumpy wisps of pink and orange.

Sasha rubbed at her eyelids with delicate white hands- a habit she had never lost from her human years. She was perched on the roof of her apartment building, squatting on the weathervane. Her perfect balance assured she would not fall.

Squinting irritably down at the empty streets, which would soon be crawling with early morning risers, Sasha for probably the millionth time damned her lack of ability to sleep. She would love to abandon herself to the oblivion of sleep, to dreams, even to nightmares. It would bring a separate peace from this world.

But that was the least of her worries… the slim vampire grimaced when she thought of her to-do list for today.

Register at the local high school as a self-sufficient orphan (whatever that would mean to the principal she did not know and did not care to find out).

Find a job to take care of her apartment rent (she would run out of savings from her construction job in New York soon).

Sasha ran lightly back down the three flights of stairs to her smallish apartment to choose an outfit for the day. Sure no one would see her, she had been perching atop the weathervane in only her lacy bikini cut panties and matching bra, her shoulder-blade length, straight black hair softly whispering about her back and chest.

She posed in front of the floor-length mirror and curled her lip. She had been turned young, so she was the proud owner of a healthily toned body. The smooth, translucent skin ran sleekly over the taut muscles of her flat stomach, her strong, slightly bulging thighs and biceps, her round and pert breasts. It was lucky she had been only seventeen. Otherwise she might have been an old woman forever, and no one wants their boobs engaging in the race towards their feet for eternity!

Sniggering to herself at her own private joke, Sasha slipped on a thin white tank top that stretched just past her bottom, a pair of dark green leggings- the ones with less than five holes- and her favorite black peacoat. It covered her torso from her chin to her upper thighs. Playing with the dull brass buttons that made two straight lines down the front of the coat, she chewed her pale lip- another habit she had never lost. She was nervous about today- she had never moved to a new place like this. She had never dealt with anyone but the obstreperous New Yorkers. She did not know how to act.

Plus the two sets of emergency contact lenses she'd stuffed into her suitcase had been stolen.

'Oh well,' she grumbled, yanking on her black, scuffed up combat boots. 'I'll deal with each situation as it presents itself. I wasn't awarded the rank of colonel for nothing.'

--

Sasha sashayed into the front office of Forks High School, causing a few jaws to drop and a few husbands' and boyfriends' heads to be smacked soundly. She wasn't surprised- her eerie beauty, enhanced by the vampire venom, was an eye opener.

Speaking of eyes, she knew most of the humans in the small, brightly painted room weren't staring at her for her face. They were staring at her blood red eyes- large, round, and thickly set with long, black lashes. She shot one human, a stocky, shortish boy with mousy hair a look that clearly said, 'What's it to you, toots?'

The poor kid cowered and looked away.

The vampire gave a snort and glided up to the front desk. The slightly chubby blonde woman at the desk hadn't looked up yet, absorbed in a trashy romance novel. Sasha read the title upside-down. 'Oh Captain, My Captain!' it said in fancy script across the front, and depicted a glistening Fabio decked out in the uniform of a confederate from the American civil war.

If she could have gagged, she would have. Instead, she raised a slim hand with surprisingly sharp knuckles, and rapped smartly on the desk.

"OH!" squeaked the dumpy woman, dropping her florid book and patting down the front of her thick pink sweater. "I DO apologize, how can I… help… you?" she stumbled over the last part as she got a full view of Sasha's eyes.

"Hello. My name is Sasha Baryon and I would like to confirm my registration with this high school for my junior year," Sasha announced, a satisfied smirk on her face. "Also I would like to request special accommodations for my condition…"

At this point, enjoying the hell out of the look on the receptionist's face, Sasha just barely heard the beginning of a quiet snarl coming from the back of the room. She turned to see two young men standing at the back of the room, their fists clenched and their eyes wide, nearly baring their teeth at her. Her breath caught in her throat- they were beautiful beyond imagination, and pale as sanded ivory. The one on the left was slim and of average height and build, his slightly messy copper hair curling around his face and jaw like an angel's halo. The other was tall and had beautiful blond hair, and an equally if not even more angelic face. His eyes were intense and they bored into her. He looked as if he'd smelled something rotten. But for their golden eyes, she would have assumed they were…

Sasha broke out of their hypnotic stare quickly and turned back to the receptionist before she embarrassed herself.

"I'm an albino-" she grinned widely at the receptionist's relieved face, as if she was thankful there was a logical explanation for the girl's odd eyes and pale skin- "and I will not be venturing out into the sun or eating the cafeteria food."

She knew the cafeteria food was a stretch, but hey, if the lady could understand even one part of her "condition", she would be satisfied.

A derisive snort exploded from the back of the room- silent to human ears but entirely audible to hers. Sasha cocked her ear toward the back and used her peripheral vision to spy on the two odd boys. It was the shorter one who had made the noise. He was giving her a look that she would have found hilarious elsewhere- a mix of shock, annoyance, and grudging admiration. He looked constipated beyond belief.

'And trust me,' Sasha thought, grimacing, 'I know the joys of both fatal dehydration and dysentery, boys. Your face would be a lot more twisted than that if you had one of those.'

She was shocked when the copper haired boy suddenly sniggered. What was he up to? Was he bipolar or something?

The boy seemed to in that instant be even more tickled, and he whispered something to the tall blond angel beside him. The angel's eyes nearly bugged out as he tried to stop himself from laughing, and then appeared to see her looking at him. He elbowed the copper boy heavily in the ribs and they both adopted an aloof air once again. Sasha raised an eyebrow to herself and turned back to the poor woman at the front desk, who had been running through her schedule and requirements.

"Thank you, Ms…?" she asked politely, dazzling the blond woman. If she became friends with the front desk receptionist it might help in the future.

"Oh, it's Ms. Pollacke," gushed the woman, completely bamboozled by the vampire's mesmerizing powers. Sasha smiled, showing every one of her shiny white teeth.

"Thank you, Ms. Pollacke! I hope to see you soon," she drawled sweetly, turning to leave with a wave.

She was careful not to look at the two strange young men as she swished out the door, crunching down the gravel walkway to the road. Second order of business: a job.

Vampire though she was, she did not notice the two boys silently following her even when she began dashing through the forest like a panther fashioned from quicksilver. She had never been caught in New York, the most dangerous city in the United States- why should anything be a danger to her here, in this tiny town?

Sasha flitted through the trees, reveling in her power.
