I was floating on cloud nine all morning. I didn't even notice the bumps and jerks of the bus on the way to school. Once we arrived I glided through the halls to my locker oblivious to those around me. When I opened the door another note, just like the last one fell out. Now I knew one person who folded notes that way. I bit my lip trying to hold back my excitement as I opened it quickly and easily.
Turn around. Was all it said… so I did.
"Good morning beautiful."
Arthur leaned against the locker next to mine, holding a single lavender rose and looking as handsome as ever.
"Good morning yourself, handsome".
He leaned forward and kissed my cheek, then placed the rose in my hair.
"Perfect." He said and smiled at his handiwork.
"Thank you. I love roses!"
"Good, I'm glad you like it. Can I walk you to homeroom?"
"I'd like that very much."
I grabbed my book for first period and felt Arthur's fingers slip between mine. We walked the short distance to my home room hand in hand. We had some time before the first bell so I didn't go in right away.
"Guinevere…"
"Yes Arthur?"
"Um, I was wondering, you don't already have a date for spring formal do you? I know that this – us – is brand new, so… if you do I'll understand but um…if not, maybe you and I…"
In my mind I was jumping for joy! But in the real world I attempted to be aloof.
"Well… I was going to stay home and wash my hair… but since you asked…YES! I would love to go with you!"
"Really? Ok then, brilliant!"
Just then the first bell rang.
"Dam. My room is in the next hall, I better get going. I'll see you in third."
He gave me a quick kiss on the other cheek and dashed off. I drifted into the classroom and took my seat.
"There you are Gwen! I was starting to worry."
I looked at Morgana in confusion, "Why were you worried?"
She looked at as if I had grown two heads. "Oh I don't know Gwen, you get a note from a mysterious stranger asking you to meet after school, then I don't hear from you all night and your late getting to home room! I thought, She went and me that psychopath stalker and he killed her and scattered bits of her all over school I had nightmares about it all last night!"
I laughed, Morgana had a flair for drama and a tendency to be over protective of her friends. "Thank you for your concern but as you can see I'm perfectly fine."
"You did go though, didn't you?"
I blushed, there was no keeping secrets from Morgana; she always seemed to know of things in advance. I wondered if I should tell her about Arthur and I, was it my place to tell her or his?
"Yes, I went."
There was a long pause after as Morgana waited for me to continue. When I didn't respond she bombarded me with questions.
"Well? Dish girl! Who is he? Is he in our class? Do I know him?"
"Yes he is in our class and yes you do know him."
"O-M-G! Who is it?"
I bit my lip and grimaced, I had to give her something but I didn't know how she would react. "I'll tell you at lunch."
"Ugh!" She groaned, "I'll go mad with anticipation!" Morgana rolled her eyes back and sunk dramatically into her chair.
My first two classes went by rather quickly. Third period was chemistry with Professor Gaius, a portly old man with a kind face that made you think his class would be easy but he was actually one of the toughest professors in our school. Today was the first lab session and we were going to be assigned a partner or group to work in for the rest of the semester. I looked around and didn't see Arthur but I did see my friend Merlin who waved me over.
"Oy, Gwen."
I joined him and continued watching for Arthur.
"Waiting for someone?" Merlin asked knowingly.
"What? N-no…well maybe. What's with the tone? What do you know?"
"Ow!" He cried as I poked him gently in the ribs.
"Don't be such a baby Merlin." Arthur drawled as he joined us.
"Is there something I should know?" I asked, suspicious of the two of them.
Merlin looked away, Arthur looked down and they both answered together.
"No." "Yes"
"Which is it?" I asked though I already knew the answer.
Only Arthur answered this time. "Merlin helped me write the note, he's been encouraging me to confess my feelings for some time."
"Merlin! Is this true?"
"What's true is your boyfriend is a prat!"
"Am not!" Arthur replied indignantly, "Cabbage head."
"Clot pole!" Merlin retorted.
"ENOUGH" Professor Gaius shouted from the front of the classroom. "Arthur, Merlin, Gwen, do not make me separate you."
"Sorry Professor." The three of us mumbled.
"What exactly is a clot pole?" Arthur whispered to Merlin.
"In two words…Arthur Pendragon."
Arthur's right arm shot out as if to hit Merlin but I grabbed it just before the professor glanced in our direction again.
"Stop it you two!" I admonished. "Do you want to get us all detention?" That calmed them down, for the time being anyway. I was beginning to regret my choice in partners; this was going to be a long semester.
At the end of class Arthur wrapped an arm around my shoulders as we walked to our next classes. I had English History with Professor Kilgarrah and Arthur had Political Science with Professor Lot. They were right next door to each other so we could spend a few minutes together before class. Arthur leaned in to kiss me and while it was a very nice kiss I had to cut it short. "What's wrong, Guinevere?"
"Well nothing really it's just… what if someone sees us?"
"You don't want to be seen with me? Now?" He replied, obviously hurt.
"No, no, no Arthur, it isn't like that, please!" I begged.
"Then what is it like Guinevere?"
"I'm sorry, it's just… I haven't told Morgana about us yet."
The hurt expression Arthur wore quickly changed to one of understanding.
"I see. If she hears it from someone else it will be bad for both of us."
I nodded.
"Why haven't you told her?"
"Well this - us – is so new, and well, I wasn't sure if she should hear it from me or you."
"Hmm… I hadn't thought of that. I assumed you would tell her."
"I'm afraid of how she's going to react. Even though you're her brother-"
"Half- brother" Arthur corrected.
"Ok. Half-brother, she doesn't exactly like you and ever since Lance she has been super protective of me."
Arthur tensed at the mention of Lance, my ex-boyfriend, his ex-best friend. Lance was a military brat who came to our school a year and a half ago as a new student. All the girls were immediately crushing on him; he was tall, dark and handsome; athletic and an all-around nice guy. He joined the rugby and football teams and became friends with Arthur, but he was also intellectual and joined Merlin on the chess team. We dated for the better part of last year and he promised to take me to the spring formal. I should have known it was too good to be true. He never came to pick me up so I went to the dance looking for him and he was nowhere to be found. I found out later that his dad received transfer orders that morning and they had to leave that day. No one has heard from him since.
"Oh, I don't know if Merlin told you – since apparently he was in on the whole thing – I showed him, Morgana and Mithian the note at lunch yesterday. Morgana tried convincing me not to go, she thought you would turn out to be some creepy psychopath. Apparently she was worried about me all night and had nightmares about me being cut into tiny pieces and scattered about the school." I laughed hoping to ease the tension.
Arthur rolled his eyes. "Could she be more overdramatic?"
The warning bell rang before I could answer but Arthur gave me a quick kiss goodbye before heading into class. As I took my seat a minute later I realized we hadn't decided how we were going to tell Morgana about us.
