REWRITTEN 1/13/2019
Author's Note: Didn't mean for this chapter to take so long to post. I've been a bit busy. I'll do my best to make sure none of you have to wait this long next time.
But let's get back to the story! Enjoy!
After her greeting, she stood straight back up. Kagome looked to see her classmates wide eyed, mouths agape.
'Did I say something weird?' She thought, concerned. All she did was greet herself…Did they hear about what happened when she first got there? Was her hair messed up from the wind? 'I hope I won't be known as the 'weird new kid'.' She worried.
The stares were starting to make Kagome uncomfortable and she began to fidget under their collective gazes. She looked to the teacher for guidance but the woman was preoccupied with whatever was on her clipboard.
"You will be sitting" She pointed to a desk. "in that seat." She directed.
Kagome nodded and walked towards the desk before stopping at the sound of a loud thud. Someone had just loudly flung open the door, causing everyone to look upon the three figures.
"Why'd you open it like that?"
"Well, it didn't seem like you were going to open it." The two argued.
"Sorry we're late. There was…important club business we had to attend to first." The third person said.
Kagome glanced at the speakers. It was a female brunette who, oddly enough, was wearing the male's uniform and behind her were a pair of red headed twins. She impishly smiled from seeing the two brothers. She could recognize troublemakers when she saw them, and those two more than qualified for that title with their mischievous auras.
She scanned the girl to get a quick run-down of what her deal could be. The more she studied the girl however…the more she seemed completely normal, other than the fact that she was wearing the boy's uniform. Sure, she was cute. Possibly well-educated, but nothing else really stuck out about her. It was weird. She gave the impression of someone who didn't have the patience to put up with other people's antics but she seemed to be friends with the twins. Kagome would have thought their personalities would clash with one another's, but she wasn't complaining. Maybe this class would get interesting with those three here.
The woman crossed her arms. "And just what was so important that made the three of you late for homeroom?" The teacher asked in a testy tone.
'Does this happen all the time?' Kagome wondered. She turned to the other students to see their expressions. The guys seemed miffed, maybe even jealous, for some reason while the girls seemed quite too cheery for Kagome's taste. Her eyes narrowed. 'I can't help but feel that I'm missing something here.'
"The boss needed some assistance." Said one of the twins.
Flashback
The three of them ran through the Host Club's doors and almost smashed into Tamaki in the process.
Haruhi almost stumbled backwards from her sudden stop. Tamaki still stood in front of them, unmoving. His head was tilted upwards and seemed focused on something above the door.
"Tamaki-senpai?" Haruhi questioned, the three of them slowly stepping closer to him. "The twins said you called and that you said there was an emergency."
"It didn't work…" He mumbled to himself.
"What are you talking about?" Kaoru asked him.
"The machine!" Tamaki yelled and pointed above the door. "The rose petals didn't fall when you came through the door!" He explained.
Haruhi covered her face with her hand in irritation. "Tamaki-senpai, please tell me you called us here for something more important."
He blinked at her. "Why would there need to be anything else?" He asked. "Isn't this problem already bad enough?!"
The twins disapprovingly shook their heads and Haruhi pinched the bridge of her nose. "Do you know how long it took us to run over here? Now we have to run back." As she scolded Tamaki, the twins had already enough and walked out of the room. "We're going to be late for class. You should go to class too instead of overreacting over a…flower cascading machine." Haruhi went to the door before he could stop her and left the exasperated host to absorb himself in his ridiculous priorities.
End Of Flashback
"I see." The teacher didn't seem impressed with their answer but checked them off on the attendance sheet anyway. "Get to your seats. Homeroom is almost over."
With that said, the four teenagers made their way to their desks without a word.
Kagome noticed she was sitting behind the female brunette and saw the twins sit on both sides of the other girl. She found herself wondering about the girl in front of her again. Why would she wear the boy's uniform? Were girls even allowed to do that?
She tried to shake the thought out of her head. Their first teacher had just walked in so she did her best to pay attention to the teacher, but she found herself thinking about the girl again. How could she not? The girl was literally sitting right in front of her after all.
'Maybe that uniform is more comfortable than the girl's.' She snorted. 'It looks better than the female's too. Not sure why the school thought that the yellow dress was a good idea.'
Unfortunately, Kagome didn't notice she'd been unconsciously staring at the back of the girl's head and, thanks to her barrage of bad luck, the girl turned around to find Kagome unblinkingly studying her.
"Um." Haruhi started in an uneasy tone.
Kagome blinked back into reality.
"Do you need something?" She asked her.
Kagome realized how her staring must have seemed from the other girl's point of view and immediately blushed in embarrassment. "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to stare at you like that."
"It's ok." She assured her. It wouldn't be the first time she'd caught classmates staring at her. "I've never seen you in my class before. Are you new?"
"Y-Yeah. I just moved here. Uh. My name is Kagome Higurashi." Kagome told her.
"My name's Haruhi Fujioka." She reached over the desk and held out her hand.
"Nice to meet you." Kagome happily shook the girl's hand. 'She's seems really nice. Definitely more normal than anyone I've met here so far.'
"Was it hard for you to find the class? I know how intimidating these big buildings can seem, especially for a new student." She asked.
Kagome fought a sigh as she thought about how much she'd struggled just to find the classroom. "I was never given a proper tour of the school so I struggled just to find this room." She explained to her. She wondered why Sesshomaru hadn't prepared her for the sheer size of the school. Sometimes, it felt like he did simple things like that on purpose, as if he was holding a grudge of some kind on her. Suddenly, her eyes filled with hope. "Hey. If you wouldn't mind, could you show me around?" Kagome sweetly smiled at her.
.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`
Haruhi was slightly stunned by the boy's abrupt request. 'This guy is really straightforward…' She thought to herself. She knew nothing about this guy and vice versa, yet he was adamant on her showing him around. She wondered whether she should accept his request. Haruhi knew that if she was late to the Host Club that they would berate her to no end, and, once again, she didn't know anything about this new kid. What if there were ill intentions behind his request? But…
She looked at the boy's hopeful face and the almost pure radiance that he gave off.
She seriously doubted that he had any ulterior motives.
"Uhh. Yeah." She reluctantly agreed. "I could show you around a little after class."
"But won't you be late for your club?" Kagome asked.
'If you already knew I had other plans after school then why did you ask for me to show you around in the first place?' She thought in exasperation. "It'll be fine." She answered. 'I better not regret this.'
Kagome smiled at her. "Thank you. I really appreciate it." Then, Kagome's expression suddenly changed, clearly in deep thought, and started to look Haruhi up and down.
"What is it?" Haruhi asked, tense at the sudden change in atmosphere.
"You wouldn't happen to be the scholarship student I heard about, would you? I heard a couple of kids talking about it in the hallway and you kind of fit their description."
Haruhi gave a sigh. "I am. I thought they would have stopped talking about it by now." She ignored the urge to ask him how they'd described her and instead looked up at him. "What about you? Why are you entering the school so late in the semester?"
Kagome scratched the back of her head, a nervous look on her face. "Oh. I just moved here and…my guardian enrolled me to this school. No big deal."
Haruhi nodded in understanding. 'Rich people really don't know how lucky they have it sometimes. It'd be impossible for someone like me to get into this school like that, especially so late in the school year.' She thought
To Haruhi's surprise, the boy continued to try to converse with her, although they were in the middle of class. Even more to her surprise was that she was allowing him to distract her. They ended up talking with one another on simple topics such as music and books.
.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`
Their conversation was going great but Kagome was trying to hold her tongue the entire time. She knew it was none of her business, but, sadly for her, Inuyasha's tendency to be obtrusive had rubbed off on her over their travels.
"I know it's none of my business but" She bit her lip. 'Don't ask. Don't ask. Don't ask.' She repeated to herself as if it was a mantra. "why are you wearing the male uniform?" She blurted out and immediately cursed herself in her mind right afterwards.
Haruhi raised her eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
"I just wanted to know why you weren't wearing the dress like all the other girls." Kagome elaborated. "But who could blame you? The girl's outfit looks terrible." She added in an effort to lighten the mood.
Haruhi's eyes widened and she looked around the classroom to make sure no one was paying attention to them. She leaned in towards Kagome. "How did you know I was-"
"Fujioka and Higurashi!"
Both of them snapped their attention to their miffed teacher.
"I don't mean to intrude on your conversation" The teacher said sarcastically. "but the rest of the class is trying to learn. If the both of you think you don't need to pay attention then I'm sure that one of you wouldn't mind coming up to the board and solving this equation." The teacher's irritated voice said.
All eyes landed on the two of them. Even the twins looked towards them, wondering who their little toy was talking to.
Haruhi was about to get up from her seat but saw Kagome already stepping up to the board. 'How did he move so fast?' She thought.
Everyone looked to see the mysterious boy pick up the chalk and start to write a range of numbers and symbols. After a few more sounds of the chalk scraping onto the board, she finally put the chalk down and stepped back, checking her work. When Kagome seemed content with her answer she started to walk away before stopping. She lifted her hand out of her pocket and pointed at the teacher. "You also made a mistake on your example question. You should check it again." Kagome said and continued to walk back to her desk.
The teacher looked from her to the board repeatedly. The man had indeed made a mistake on the question and Kagome's answer was correct. The teacher cleared his throat and continued on with the lesson.
Kagome softly sat back in her seat without another word.
Hearts floated around the room as girls began to quietly gush about her.
"He's so intelligent!"
"And look at how cute he is."
"I was there when he first came into the school."
"Are you serious? I heard that there was even choir singing when he got here!"
'What is wrong with all of them? They talk about me as if I'm not even here. Is there a chemical leak somewhere?' Kagome thought, looking around the room for any visible gas.
Haruhi turned back around to look at Kagome. "I didn't expect you to go up and solve it."
Kagome paused in her search for possible harmful or mind altering chemical gasses to look at the girl in front of her. "Yeah. I had a nice tutor." She said, forcing a smile.
The truth was, she was surprised she'd understood what she'd just written on the board herself. Not to mention her tutor had been far from nice. It had been Sesshomaru after all. When he first came to visit her, he had stayed at her house and ruthlessly tutored her for weeks before he left. Everyday had been nonstop torture when he was around. He turned everything she did into an educational lesson of some sort. He even made a "game" where every time she got a question wrong he'd add 20 more minutes to their lesson plan and to what he called physical prowess training.
'I'm just happy I survived. But that training will haunt me forever.' Kagome shivered. 'Now that I think about it, I never asked him anything about the others. Or rather, he just didn't answer them. I'll have to do that when he gets back...Whenever that is.' When she came back to reality, she saw Haruhi's lips moving and realized that she'd missed every single word she'd just said.
"I'm sorry, could you say that again?" She asked, embarrassed.
"I said, how did you know I was a girl?" Haruhi whispered.
Now it was Kagome's turn to be confused. "What do you mean how did I know?" She asked but then tensed. "Wait. Was it supposed to be a secret? I didn't mean to-" Kagome started to ramble.
"It's okay." Haruhi said, attempting to calm the girl down before her voice grew any louder. "I just wasn't expecting you to know so quickly or even at all. Just…do me a favor and don't tell anyone." She put her hand on Kagome's hand.
"Aww~!"
Kagome had to put her hands over her ears to block out the horrendous sound. "Why are they so loud? Do you think they heard us?"
Haruhi looked around the classroom to find every single girl with hearts in their eyes. "No. I think we're safe." She turned her attention back to her. "So, how did you know?"
Kagome collected herself. "I didn't know it was supposed to be a secret." She told her again. 'What am I supposed to say? Not like I can tell her I knew she was a girl because I could sense it. She'd think I was crazy.' Kagome thought. "To me you looked like a girl wearing masculine-like clothes. It never crossed my mind that you were a guy." She answered. 'This may be the worst lie I've ever told. Good work Kagome.' She scolded herself and looked to Haruhi, praying she bought her story.
Haruhi seemed content enough with her answer.
Kagome relaxed in her chair. 'I'm not sure how long I can keep this lying up.'
"Haruhi. Give me which formula I should use when answering this type of question."
Haruhi turned towards the teacher. "Yes sensei." She scanned the problem on the board and spouted out the correct complex formula.
'I guess I should start paying attention now as well.' Kagome thought.
After School
The two of them were wandering through the hallways, entering different parts of the campus. Their walk was silent except for the occasional explanation from Haruhi here and there.
"Um. Thanks for showing me around. With how huge this place is I would have gotten lost for sure." Kagome said, attempting to make small talk.
Haruhi gave a slight chuckle. "Yeah. I thought the same thing when I first got here."
They continued to walk through the halls with Haruhi pointing out different classrooms and showing her a few of the clubs that they passed by.
"Since we're on the topic of clubs, I remember you and those twins saying you were late because of it." Kagome brought up. "What club are you a part of?"
Haruhi froze. She didn't know if she should tell Kagome about it or not. The boy seemed trustworthy enough. He already knew she was a girl and didn't seem to have a problem with it. "It's…a long story. Can we change the subject?"
Kagome nodded, taking the hint, and they continued to walk.
"Are you going to join a club Kagome?" Haruhi asked.
She looked over to Haruhi. "I was thinking about it. Do you have any suggestions?"
Haruhi thought over it for a while. "It depends. What do you like to do?" She finally said.
"Hm. Well I would like for it to be a physical sport. It would be great if there was some kind of archery club."
"I have a friend that does Kendo. I could ask if he needs anymore members for you." She said thinking about the quiet host.
"I might give it a try. I've never used a bamboo blade." She laughed. "I wonder if it will be the same as a real sword. That, I've used." She said, not understanding how it may have come across as a bit menacing.
Haruhi nervously laughed. "I could get you a list of all of the clubs available at the school if you want." Haruhi offered.
"Really? That would be great." Kagome said with a sigh. "I guess I owe you again."
Haruhi turned to her. "You don't owe me anything. I'd do it for any kind person."
Kagome didn't know why, but that comment made her smile. "Haruhi." She clasped her hands together with hers. "You are likely the most normal person at this school and I would appreciate to have a sane friend like you."
"Um…ok…?" Haruhi slightly stuttered with an unsure look.
"Normal girls like us have to stick together, right?" Kagome said.
Haruhi blinked at her.
She smiled. "What?"
"You're a girl?" Haruhi asked her.
Kagome's facial expression nor body moved, but inside her head she was having a mental break-down. 'You idiot, Kagome! You haven't even finished your first day of school and you already let your secret slip out of that mouth of yours!? What the fuck? Get it together! You can't even do this one simple task! How do you expect to-"
Haruhi snapped her fingers in front of the unmoving, newly discovered girl. "Kagome?" She snapped her fingers again. The longer she said nothing the more she just confirmed Haruhi's suspicion.
"So, who's our little Haruhi talking to?"
The voices caught Kagome and Haruhi's attentions. The redheaded twins appeared behind them making their way to their sides. One had somehow snaked their arm around Kagome while the other twin had their arm around Haruhi.
"Hey. You're the new kid in our class, right?" One of them said.
"Uh. Yeah, I'm Kagome." She introduced herself. "Haruhi, who are these two?"
"*sigh* This is Kaoru and this is Hikaru." Haruhi said.
If Kagome didn't know better, it seemed like Haruhi looked defeated. Almost like she didn't want Kagome to know these guys at all. Nevertheless, Kagome paid attention to where she pointed, making sure she matched their auras with their names. "Nice to meet the both of you." Kagome said, trying not to notice how close they were to her. 'Well, aren't they friendly?' She thought, looking at the arm hooked around her. 'Maybe a bit too friendly...'
"We just came by to see why you weren't doing your hosting duties." Hikaru said.
"We wanted to know what was so important-" Kaoru began.
"That you would blow us off!" They said in unison.
"Calm down. I was just showing Kagome around and wanted to help he-him" She quickly corrected herself. "get used to the school." She was still getting over her surprise.
If the twins had caught her mistake, they didn't show it.
"Uh-Haruhi?"
"Yeah?" She asked, now looking to Kagome.
"Did they just say hosting duties? What does that mean?"
Haruhi slouched in displeasure. Why did the twins always have to make things worse for her?
Kagome jumped at the feeling of her phone vibrate in her pocket. She reached into her pocket and pulled it out, taking a look at the caller id. "Um. I have to take this." She said. She escaped the grasp of Kaoru and walked away from the group as they continued to talk with each other.
"Hello?"
"Kagome. I was calling to make sure you were ok and when you were going to get back."
"Oh, hey Milo. I'm on my way now."
"Are you sure you don't want me to pick you up? It won't be any trouble for me at all." He insisted. "I really don't think that you should be walking home so late."
She rolled her eyes. She wasn't even going to bring up the fact that it was still bright outside. "I can take care of myself Milo. I won't take so long, so stop worrying. And I know my way now after seeing you drive me here this morning." She was starting to wonder if Sesshomaru had purposefully picked such protective people to be around her.
"So Haruhi, who's your friend?" Hikaru asked.
"Weren't you listening to him? His name is Kagome." Haruhi said.
"We know that, but there's a reason you're being so friendly to him, right?" Kaoru questioned.
Haruhi shook her head. "I can't just help a new kid out on their first day at a new school?"
The twins looked at each other. "Nah." They said.
Haruhi grumbled under her breath.
"You know, he's not bad looking." Hikaru looked Kagome up and down.
"And it looked like the girls in our class took a liking to him too." His brother said. "You think we should tell the boss?"
Haruhi waved her hands no. "You don't need to tell the "boss" anything. Just leave Kagome alone."
"Hm. I don't know. Part of our hosting duties is to be on the alert for any possible hosts that we may come across." They said, almost as if they were reciting from a manual.
Kagome closed the phone and stuffed it back in her pocket. She turned around, facing the others. "I've got to get going. I'll see you guys later. Haruhi, we'll talk later 'kay?" She disappeared down the corridor which left Haruhi and the Hitachiin twins alone.
Kaoru and Hikaru took Haruhi by the arms and pulled her along beside them. "Come on. We have to go!"
.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`.`
*giggle*
"Huh?" She looked behind her only to see nothing…again. 'Why do these girls keep bugging me? They've been following me ever since I left the school. Maybe if I keep walking they'll eventually go away.'
*giggle giggle*
She stopped again. 'I guess not.' Kagome gave a sigh. 'I guess there's only one thing left to do…' She thought. She took in a deep breath and immediately took off down the street.
"Where does he think he's going?"
"Wow. He's really fast."
"We gotta follow him! I want to know where he lives."
The yellow clad girls ran after her.
'What is wrong with these girls?!' She looked behind herself to see the girls surprisingly right on her tail. How could they run so fast while still wearing that uniform!? 'Why are they chasing me? Whatever I did I'm sorry!' She ducked into a dark alley and attempted to blend in with the wall and slowed her breathing as much as she could. She closed her eyes as she heard the group of girls approaching.
"Hey, where'd he go?"
She held her breath. They were right beside her.
"I can't believe we lost him."
"Don't worry. There's always tomorrow."
Kagome listened for their steps. When it felt like the coast was clear she let out a huge sigh of relief that she didn't know she had been holding. She opened her eyes to see a pair staring right back at her. "Ahhh!" She stood in terror for a second before taking a few breaths again.
In front of her was a dog.
'Thank goodness. It's just a dog.' She clenched her hand over her heart. 'I almost had a heart attack.' She looked back to the dog and took in its appearance. 'Those eyes and that fur look just like…' "Fluffy's." She said out loud. Kagome bent down to the dog's level. "Hey there. Thanks for not giving me away." She told the dog. She reached her hand out and gave it a 'Come here' motion.
The dog was hesitant but slowly made its way towards her.
"That's a good girl."
When the dog got close enough it jumped on her leg and made its way to the top of her head and rested there.
"Not what I meant, but that works too." She pulled the dog off her head and held it out away from her body. "You're a little cutie aren't you girl?" Kagome looked down to the bottom part of the dog. "Ohh...I meant handsome boy."
The dog gave a pleased bark.
Right after her comment, a foul smell wafted itself under Kagome's nose. Her nose scrunched up and she held the dog farther away from her than it had previously been. It's collar jingled at the motion.
"You're not fond of staying clean, are you?"
The dog yawned in response.
"You should let your owners give you a bath from time to time." She told him. "Well, I'll let you get back to your business." She set the dog back on the ground and exited the alleyway.
As she was walking, she could hear the sound of small padded steps walking behind her. She turned back around and saw the dog behind her. Following her.
"Go on now." She almost shooed him away until she saw the state he was in. His fur was matted and the white fur emphasized the amount of dirt that was clinging to him. A faint scar on his left ear could be seen because the tip of the ear had a small patch of exposed skin with no fur covering it. She thought because of the collar it must be owned but in the light you could see how old and tattered it was. It was really a sad sight, a heart dropping scene for any dog-lover.
"Aah. You're in…really bad shape, huh?" She sighed, kneeling down in front of him. She reached out and pet his head while simultaneously checking to see his reaction. The dog, to her surprise, didn't do anything. If anything, it actually nudged his head into her hand. 'He's had to have had an owner before. He's way too complacent around humans to be an unowned stray.'
She thought about what her next move should be. She couldn't just leave him out here. At least, not like this.
Kagome picked him up in her arms. He seemed to be resting comfortably and curled into a ball.
"You're coming home with me." She said, then smiled. "And if I ever find your previous owner I'll make them pay dearly." She smiled even harder.
Author's Note: I don't know about any of you but I like how the story is going so far and I'm really enjoying writing it. Don't forget to review and give feedback.
See you next time.
