Last time on Bad Day

Xxx

"What is this?" All eyes turned to Naruto as he held his hands up.

"Come...Shadowkhan!"

Xxx

Naruto grinned brightly as the green aura around him lashed about like a fire, blowing his clothes around in an invisible wind. The glowing red etching on his chest seemed to pulse as everyone gawked at the growing shadows.

"W-what is this," Ino squeaked out while watching her shadow grow under her. Kiba and Sasuke were too speechless from the spectacle to answer their female teammate.

"This here is the back up," Naruto replied. Suddenly, something seemed to grow from each shadow making the Genin and old bridge builder shudder. Kakashi, who was watching from inside the glowing orb of water narrowed his eyes.

'Naruto what is this?' The objects fully sprouted from the shadows revealing about a dozen men. They were dressed in black generic looking ninja garments complete with the mask covering everything but their oddly grey skin around glowing red eyes.

"Some clone technique?!" Zabuza yelled out. The ninja merely stared at him and his water clone. Zabuza started to chuckle which evolved into full blown cackling. "You think these petty ninja can beat me? Don't make me laugh! Their power level isn't anywhere near mine."

"They aren't meant to beat you," Zabuza gave Naruto an incredulous look. "The Shadowkhan are here merely for support." Naruto turned to Team seven. "Well whenever you're ready."

Sasuke looked wearily around at his impromptu comrades with a frown. They looked like classic ninjas before the time of individuality. Turning his head to Naruto he nodded.

"Alright stupid wizard." And with that he rushed forward making Kiba shake himself out of his stupor to follow. The Shadowkhan also took that as a cue and rushed forward with the boy with a speed Sasuke didn't expect.

"Oi wait for me!" Akamaru let out a roar like bark in agreement and followed. Zabuza grunted before making another half ram sign and making another two mizu bunshin from the water.

"Come die whelps!" Ino held the flowers in her hand and prepared to throw until she felt a hand on her shoulder.

"Wha-!"

"Ah ah, let's wait a bit Ino-chan," Naruto said grinning. "When you see a perfect opportunity I want you to throw those flowers at the real Zabuza. They are poisonous I assume?" Ino nodded numbly before looking forward to where her teammates plus ten strange ninja were fighting three clones of Zabuza to get close to Kakashi. Ironically it looked like a well-organized scramble.

Sasuke threw a salvo of shuriken at the nearest water clone. Coincidentally four Shadowkhan also threw their own shuriken with his making four into twenty. The clone cursed and hid behind its sword letting the throwing stars bounce off the great blade. Once the barrage ended the mizu bunshin swung its blade forward hoping to cleave the young Uchiha in half. Sasuke swore loudly knowing he wouldn't be fast enough to dodge the swing. He was shocked when two of the mysterious ninja jumped in front of him to take the attack. Instead of blood, like Sasuke was expecting, the Shadowkhan burst into black smoke leaving naught a trace behind. Sasuke blinked dumbly and silently thanked Naruto for the help.

Kiba on the other hand fought hand to hand with the other water clone. The Shadowkhan had already showed their prowess by raining a swarm of shuriken that took out one clone. This left Kiba and Akamaru with one while Sasuke took the other. The dog ninja could only marvel at how helpful the strange ninjas were. When he and Akamaru would attack the Zabuza clone would try to counter, and seeing as how even as a clone it was much stronger than Kiba, the boy had no doubt he would have been dead by now. But he wasn't dead and that was because these strange Shadowkhan would distract the clone with some of their own hand to hand or projectiles which allowed for Kiba and Akamaru to get some good hits in.

Kiba watched as a group Shadowkhan kicked the clone into the air, stunning it, and Kiba grinned.

"You're mine now! Tsuuga (Tunneling fang)!" Kiba roared as he spun sideways fiercely. He turned into a grey tornado and ripped into the water clone making it burst into a spray of rain.

To the side Naruto was watching with a hand on his chin as he tried to take everything in. He had lost four of his ten Shadowkhan already and there was only one mizu bunshin left. However, he wanted to get Kakashi out immediately so something needed to be done. His answer came to him as Sasuke jumped backwards to take a breath.

"Oi ducky you're an Uchiha right?"

"Right..." Sasuke half growled half panted.

"So you should know a fire move then."

"Right..." Naruto stroked his chin once more and looked from his Shadowkhan who were working together with Kiba and his dog to fight the last clone and back to a worried and tense looking Ino who was gripping her handful of sharp looking flowers.

"Do you happen to know that phoenix one?"

Xxx

Kakashi watched in baited breath as his students went up against a truly formidable foe. Or his clone to be exact, not stating that the clone wasn't strong. Even if it was only a tenth of the original's strength it would be enough to kill fresh Genin. But the former Anbu still held hope that Naruto would be a factor in this battle.

The boy was right though. It had been years since he had seen him. Kakashi had no idea what the blonde was capable of anymore. Last time he saw him he was still blowing concoctions up in his face. Kakashi had to stifle a chuckle at that last memory due to the situation he was in but a soot faced little Naruto really was quite hilarious. The Jounin almost cried out in shock when the Shadowkhan came, but reeled in his emotions so Zabuza wouldn't know he was just as surprised.

While Kakashi continued to float in his watery jail, Naruto had sent a mental command to his remaining Shadowkhan to gang up on the final clone and keep it busy as a distraction. 'They only need to keep it busy. Not dispel it.'

"Okay now that Kiba is back and knows the plan, shall we start?" the three Genin nodded to the blonde who pointed forward. "Go!"

At the loud declaration Sasuke sprang forward with Kiba behind him following close behind. As the two boys got closer to the bank of the water they saw the clone break out of the gang of ninja with a swipe of his sword. After dispelling another two dark ninjas it rushed toward Kiba and Sasuke intent on taking them out with a viscous swipe of its zanbatou. Kiba immediately stopped and placed his hands in a seal quickly.

"Shikyaku no jutsu (Man-beast imitation jutsu)!" Instantly Kiba's fangs grew more prominent, his nails grew longer, and his appearance became more beast like. Using a quick burst of speed he rushed the surprised Zabuza clone, it not expecting the Genin to straight up attack him. Kiba slid forward and grabbed a hold of the clones legs while sliding between them simultaneously. The clone stumbled allowing the augmented dog nin to kick himself up while throwing the flabbergasted bunshin towards the Shadowkhan.

Sasuke, didn't look back at his teammates impressive feat and continued forward (not to say that the others didn't notice because they saw and Tazuna was still trying to take his jaw off the floor). No Sasuke continued forward and ran through a quick sequence of seals before gathering as much chakra as he could. Jumping high off the sand Sasuke placed his fingers to his lips and released his technique with a roar.

"Katon: Housenka no justu (Phoenix flower jutsu)!" A barrage of medium sized fireballs shot from Sasuke's mouth down towards where Zabuza was keeping Kakashi prisoner. Zabuza narrowed his eyes at the incoming fire and growled.

"This is your plan? This is your plan?!" the missing nin yelled out before grabbing his sword with his free hand. With a great upwards swipe into the water in front of him he sent a massive wave upwards that fizzled each fireball that hit the wall of water. It also, however, blocked his vision in front and as the wave of water began to fall his senses through years of being a ninja kicked in. Dozens of dark purple flowers with stems like knives shot through the falling water heading directly for the man. Zabuza cursed loudly and brought Kubikiribouchou in front of him as a shield. But with one arm still out holding the Suroi jutsu, Zabuza failed to guard that arm and was nicked twice before he let go of his technique with a scream of rage.

"I'll fucking kill you all!" Zabuza yelled out as he jumped forward. Sasuke, who had landed in the water after his attack, looked up in shock as Zabuza brought his blade down.

CLANG!

Zabuza's eyes widened in fury as his pupils dilated from anger while Kakashi held a kunai up to block Zabuza's significantly larger blade.

"How are you doing this?!"

"Trade secret," Kakashi mocked. "And to think a bunch of kids outsmarted you. They are either extremely smart or you're just that dumb."

"I take great offense to that Kakashi!" the silver haired Jounin heard. Naruto shook his fist at the man before turning to his final batch of Shadowkhan. Gritting his teeth he snapped his fingers and watched as his ninja grabbed the final water clone and sunk down into their shadows taking the bunshin with them kicking and screaming. Sighing in relief, the boy plopped onto the ground as the fiery green aura around him faded and the mark on his chest stopped glowing.

"Are you okay?" Naruto looked up at the worried face of Ino and waved his hand.

"I'll be fine. Just a bit tired from all the excitement." Ino still looked at Naruto with a slight frown before turning back to her sensei.

Once he was free, Kakashi immediately went on the counter attack. He and Zabuza stood facing the other, both blurring through seals. Both ended at the same time and with a loud proclamation of their technique, two great dragons made of water sprang to life and proceeded to battle one another. With a roar from each, both watery constructs burst into their original form and rained down upon the two battling ninja.

It wasn't long till Kakashi gained the upper hand however. With a hypnotizing trick from his Sharingan combined with Zabuza's own jutsu and the missing nin was sent crashing into across the bank.

"H-how? Can you see the future," Zabuza gasped out feeling it hard to breathe. No doubt his ribs were broken.

"Yes," Kakashi answered ominously. "And your future is death." As the Jounin went to deliver the final blow the sound of displaced air cut him off and he tensed. It wasn't needed for him for the sound was merely two senbon which sunk themselves into Zabuza's neck. With a gurgle and gasp the man slumped over.

As Naruto and the Genin came to join the silver haired sensei they were greeted to the sight of another ninja appearing before Kakashi next to the downed form of Zabuza.

"Oi who's that?!" Kiba yelled. "Who do they think they are taking our kill like that?"

"Kiba." Kakashi shushed before looking to the figure in front of him. Whoever they were, they were young that was for sure. Dressed in the garb of a Hunter ninja complete with a Mist village mask, Kakashi didn't doubt who was in front of them. "Your timing is impeccable Hunter-san."

The ninja bowed low before answering. "Forgive me for stealing the kill. I have been chasing this man for months now and it has become my priority to bring him back DoA. Unfortunately I wasn't powerful enough to subdue him alive, so dead was the only option I could take after you exhausted him. I thank you."

Naruto stroked his chin and gazed at the ninja. "Quite young to be in your field of work aren't you." It wasn't a question. Naruto knew how strong someone had to be to work in the Hunter corps.

"It is true they are young. But there are people younger than even you that are stronger than me," Kakashi stated. Kiba merely growled at this new figure while Sasuke contemplated his sensei's words. Ino was still shaken up so all she wanted to do was get out of the area.

"Again thank you for the assistance. Now if would excuse me I must dispose of the body," the Hunter nin said before grabbing Zabuza's limp body and disappearing in a swirl of mist. Kakashi narrowed his eyes at that but shrugged it off.

"Now are we getting to my house now or not?" Tazuna asked still trembling. Ninja battles were amazing but terrifying indeed.

"Yes. I do believe-," a loud thud cut off Kakashi as he fainted and dropped down to the ground like a bag of rocks. Team seven and the two civilians looked at the man for a moment before looking at one another.

"Who's carrying him?"

Xxx

Naruto sat in the room he shared with Kiba and Sasuke. The Genin were out in the surrounding forest with their sensei learning the tree climbing exercise. Apparently Zabuza was still alive and kicking...in a sense. After Kakashi was carried the rest of the way to Tazuna's house the group was welcomed by his daughter, Tsunami. She was a very attractive young woman who had a small boy named Inari. 'However, pretty Tsunami may be,' Naruto thought, 'Inari destroys it by being a brat.'

Naruto did not like the boy's attitude so to speak but he would put up with it. To take his mind off the little kid the blonde was currently going through his notes on where he should start his search. He did come to Nami for a reason. As Naruto was consumed with his research he missed the sound of the door open.

"What are you doing?" The blonde boy yelped in surprise making Kiba laugh loudly and Sasuke smirk. Ino, however, was more curious to the large scroll draped across Naruto's lap.

"Jeez don't you guys know how to knock?"

"Why should we? I'm staying in this room," Kiba grinned. Naruto merely grumbled in response before going back to his work.

"What are you doing?" Ino repeated still curious as to what the boy wizard was up to. In fact she was just plain curious about him. What he did back there with Zabuza just raised so many questions. 'Who are you Uzumaki Naruto?'

"I'm doing what I came here for now that I have time to focus," Naruto replied. "I'm an Archeologist like I stated before. My job is to uncover things for the Hokage. However, I have my own research that I need to do. The Old Man graciously allows me to do what I need to do as long as I still do my job."

"So why are you here then?" asked Kiba. Naruto was silent for a moment and looked to the scroll. "Does it have anything to do with that scroll?"

With a sigh the blonde stood up so that he could talk to the three Genin at their level and held up the scroll. "Are any of you familiar with the story of the Immortals and the Great Demons?" Not receiving a yes, Naruto continued. "Long, long ago there were eight great Demon Lords that ruled over much of world. These demons ruled over the human race bringing about an age of darkness," Naruto said slowly. "That was until the eight Immortals sealed these demons away into the Nether Realm with the use of the Legendary Panku Box. With the sealing of the Demon Lords peace was once again brought to the world." Team seven blinked slowly as Naruto finished the story and looked at each other.

"What's with that story? What does it have to do with what you are doing?" Ino questioned.

"That story is mainly the reason why I am here. One of the Demon Lords had a great source of power that gave it twelve amazing abilities. These powers became linked to twelve talismans that it held inside of its body," explained the blonde as he pointed to the scroll. On it was a brush painting of a vicious looking dragon that stood on its hind legs. Around the beast were twelve smaller paintings of animals.

"Those animals," the blonde girl started, "those are the twelve animals that relate to our handseals!" Naruto nodded.

"It's no coincidence seeing as how the ninja handseals relate to the Zodiac."

"Zodiac?"

"The Zodiac are twelve animals that are related to Chinese culture and prophecy. There is more to it but I'll keep it simple. Anyways on with the story. As I said the Immortals were able to beat the Demon Lords. By beating this specific one its power was split into the talismans and scattered across the world."

The young ninja were quiet as they tried to process all the information that the eccentric blonde was giving them. With their silence, Naruto carried on.

"My job is to not find these talismans per se, but to find remnants of the power that was thrown into the world but has no talisman. There is lingering power that was thrown into the world and is attached to a specific place. When I find that area I do a ritual and extract the power so that it won't go volatile and destroy the place it is in."

Sasuke, who had tried his best to pay attention, felt his ears perk up at the idea of power. "So what do you do with this power that you extract? Can you use it?"

"Potentially, yes but I haven't tried. It's taken me years of research to figure this out. And I still think it is dangerous," Naruto said not noticing the young Uchiha's eyes light up at the prospect of power. "But that is why I am here. I have zeroed in on the location of the first power that has started to act up. And coincidentally it is still in the Elemental Nations which makes things easier." Naruto rolled up the scroll with a flick of his wrist and tossed it in his pack before stretching. "Mmmm well that's enough of a history lesson for ya," he yawned. "I'm going to scout the area for a bit and see if I can find the area. If I can get it without having to make a locator spell that would be great. If not then oh well." And with that said Naruto started to walk off.

"Wait! I want to go with you," Sasuke said as Naruto stared to leave.

"Yeah me too. I kinda wanna see what this whole super power place looks like," Kiba put in as Akamaru barked in agreement. Ino merely nodded showing she wished to come also.

A small smile tugged at Naruto's lips before he covered it with a smirk.

"And why, pray tell, should I drag you three along? Didn't you all just have training so shouldn't you be tired?"

"No way! Well I mean yeah, but all we are doing is looking around right? It shouldn't be that bad. And besides you're our mission too!" Ino said. Naruto laughed and shook his head causing Ino to huff in annoyance.

"If that is what you wish then that is fine. It's not going to be too exciting. Just basically us walking around trying to find some clues," Naruto started to walk down the stairs and outside as Team seven ran to catch up. "It's time for you guys to learn how to do recon work."

Xxx

Kiba yawned loudly as he walked around the market area. Smacking his lips audibly he looked at all the poverty that graced the area. It was a truly sad sight. His team had followed Naruto around the town till he told them to split up and look for clues. And by looking for clues he meant start asking random people if they had noticed anything weird. Not the best way to talk to a bunch of terrified citizens under a dictator.

While Kiba's search was fruitless, Ino was actually finding it easier to talk to the people. There was a certain way you needed to talk to them so they were comfortable enough to speak to you. Unfortunately, Ino could tell that her two male teammates weren't the best when it came to social skills. Kiba was too brash and Sasuke-kun, well he was too closed off. 'But someday I'll get him to open up,' Ino swooned before shaking her head quickly as she saw Naruto walk up to her.

"So what information did you get," he said with his hands in his pockets. Behind him were a grumbling Kiba and a more moody than normal Sasuke.

"Um well people have been saying that there is an area in the surrounding forest where things have been a bit weird. They said they saw things like branches flying about and an abundance of flying squirrels and birds. But some just say it could be a very strong area of wind," Naruto grinned at that before turning around.

"That about matches up with what little these two bozos got," Naruto said as the two in question growled. "Oi you two just need to work on your people skills, you're going to need them," Naruto said making sure to keep that last part under his breath. With the information in hand the group decided to go back to Tazuna's house as it was getting late. The Team still had training to do and Naruto was going to explore the surrounding area on his own.

The next day Naruto found himself walking through a tranquil forest. Team seven was training once more in the tree climbing exercise. Ino had gotten it down but was told to keep doing it so she could raise her chakra capacity while Kiba and Sasuke were still have trouble.

'Mmm it's only been three days. They'll be able to do it eventually,' Naruto mused. Taking a deep breath and enjoying the nature, Naruto continued his search for the spot that the rumor was about. Ideally it wouldn't be hard to find the area, but realistically the clues that he had were few to none. Seeing an abundance of birds and flying squirrels didn't mean much.

"Maybe if I had those Genin with me the search would be easier," Naruto said as he jumped onto a fallen log and yawned. With a sigh the blonde boy stepped down and decided he had to go deeper into the forest. Technically, Naruto could have waited till Team seven finished their training but he didn't really want to just sit there as they finished. It had been years since his...accident, and he believed that he had gotten over it. But deep down Naruto really knew that no matter how much he smiled, it still hurt. Clenching his fist Naruto continued to walk through the woods as his thoughts rolled around his head. As a child all he wanted was to be was a ninja, to be Hokage. But after what happened there was no possible chance. His chakra couldn't be accessed, his hopes of being a ninja were destroyed. But there was a silver lining. There always was. Naruto had become Konoha's resident wizard. In fact he was probably the only wizard in Hi no Kuni. In all of the Elemental Nations even! And that thought was always something that made Naruto happy. He wasn't a ninja but he was by no means weak. And Naruto grinned at that.

The boy wizard was cut from his musings as he heard a twig snap. Stopping suddenly Naruto dropped low and reached into his traveling cloak. As quietly as he could, Naruto pulled out a dried blowfish and held it by the base of its tail. His fingers curled comfortably around its handle thanks to years of use as his nerves calmed down. Closing his eyes, Naruto allowed himself to be one with nature to make sure he wouldn't be caught off guard. Feeling a presence behind him the boy spun around immediately and pointed the blowfish to whatever was there.

...

Blinking in wonder the little squirrel sniffed up at the blowfish that was pointed at it like a gun. Naruto also blinked in confusion. Though it wasn't because of the squirrel. It was because the squirrel was floating more than a foot off the ground. Pocketing his fish Naruto kneeled down and reached into another pocket and pulled out a few pieces of bread from breakfast that morning. Amazed at how docile the squirrel was, he watched as it floated to the bread and grabbed the scrap of food before floating away into the foliage. Humming in thought Naruto followed closely to the anomaly. This could be interesting.

Naruto followed the floating rodent for a good while before they came upon a clearing that was lush with flowers and branches. To the boy's surprise he could see a few branches float a bit before dropping to the ground. So this was the place. Grinning from ear to ear Naruto took a good look over the area knowing he would find what he was looking for. Stopping in front of a tree the blonde's smile got impossibly larger as he slid his hand over the bark.

"Why hello there little birdie."

Xxx

The air was seemed tense as everyone sat to eat in Tazuna's home. Well it seemed tense to all but one. Naruto continued to eat happily as Inari glared holes at the boy. Kiba could tell but was too busy scarfing down his food to care. Sasuke would stare at the boy every so often and then look to his food once more and eat slowly. Ino on the other hand was getting increasingly worried. Inari just looked so angry as he glared at them all, especially Naruto. Hoping to get a good conversation going she looked around the room and spotted a picture. It was a nice picture but looked like a corner had been torn off. Maybe burned off.

"Tsunami-san that picture," Ino pointed causing both the woman in question and her father to freeze up. "It is beautiful but what happened to it. Did it get burned?"

"Ah n-no you see," Tsunami started. Before she could carry on Inari forcefully jumped from his seat and ran out of the room. The young woman sighed and Ino suddenly felt very embarrassed.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to pry," she said quietly.

"No it's fine," Tazuna put in. "I...I think you all need to hear why my grandson has been like this."

Kakashi lifted his head from his book and leaned forward. He had been wondering what all the fuss was about but didn't want to dig into the family's past. "I have been wondering about that Tazuna-san. It would seem that the picture there held someone important yes?" Tsunami and Tazuna both nodded.

"I believe you all should hear the story of Kaiza. Inari's step-father, the man I loved, and the hero of this country," Tsunami began. Naruto slowed down his eating and perked his ears. A good story was always a good source of information.

Xxx

Inari sat in his room and looked out the window sulking. How could those ninja know his pain. How could they smile and be happy thinking they could save this country. 'Gato and his thugs took father from me and they'll take your lives too,' Inari thought bitterly. He was unaware of two people watching him from his doorway.

"Quite the spirited kid isn't he," Naruto whispered with mirth. Kakashi held down a chuckle and looked at the small boy.

"I'm surprised you're not ranting and raving at the boy. I would have thought you'd be telling him to grow up or something," Naruto shook his head and let out a hollow chuckle.

"I see where you are coming from. Yes my life was hard. Harder than many people's. In fact it could be harder than yours eh?" Kakashi gave Naruto a small glare that had no heat behind it as Naruto continued. "But that's the thing Kakashi, our problems are just that. Our problems. We can have help and we can have support from other people but we should never compare our issues to others. Everybody is different. Everybody suffers. And everybody needs to know that they don't have to be alone to suffer."

Kakashi hummed in thought as he contemplated the blonde boy's words. "Quite the mature thinking you have there. Who's to say that comparing our issues with others won't make us feel better?" Naruto shook his head and laughed lightly.

"The problems we have will always be there till we can come to terms with them. Just lessening the pain by using some other person's baggage will just numb that pain," he looked to Inari with a sad smile as he spoke. "I never met my father but I also never had to watch him die in front of me. You can talk to the boy tonight if you want. I'll talk to him tomorrow maybe. I need rest." And with that said Naruto turned on his heel and walked away with a casual wave of his hand. The silver haired sensei watched as the boy turned the corner before looking back to the sniffling little boy.

"If only everyone was on the same train of thought as you."

Naruto whistled quietly as he reached his room. As he reached for the doorknob he heard the sound of whispering. Tilting his head in curiosity, the blonde chose to fore go the normal way of walking into a room and decided to silently twist the door knob before slamming it open with a kick. A short shriek and a curse were the sounds that greeted the blonde as he gazed upon Ino, Kiba, and Sasuke.

"So we meet again. Any chance you three would like to inform me why you are in my room whispering," Naruto said. As Kiba opened his mouth Naruto cut him off and corrected himself. "I'm sorry our room."

Kiba huffed and Ino picked herself off the floor from her tumble due to the surprise of the blonde wizard. "Well we were just talking about our training," Ino started. Naruto lifted his eyebrow showing his disbelief. "And talking about you," the girl relented.

"I don't get why you guys are so interested in me," Naruto chuckled.

"You're strange," Sasuke said. "You are considered a civilian by the standards of our village yet you work for Hokage-sama. You are powerful yet you don't have the ability to use chakra."

"You say all this weird stuff about artifacts and mystical things that I've never heard of. I mean like what the hell is a Dublin," Ino added.

"Dublin isn't a thing. It is a place in Ireland."

"That really doesn't tell us anything," Kiba said. "I mean is that a place in the Land of Lightning or something?"

"No, no, ahh," Naruto sighed and scratched his head. "Look it's not even in the Elemental Nations." Seeing the confused looks of team seven Naruto rubbed the bridge of his nose and tried to think of a way to explain. Coming up with no answer the blonde shrugged and looked up. "You're all curious to what I do yes?"

"Mhmm!"

"Hell yeah!"

"Woof!"

"Hn."

"Well then, what do you all say to accompanying me on a little excursion," Naruto grinned.
