Aurora Loute- District 7 Female- 16
"Almost there…" I mumble to myself, staring intently at the ticking clock mounted on top of the whitewashed wall above my professor's head. There's less than a minute left of Mr. Belgrade's history class. Well, history is one word for it. It is more of a Panem Propaganda class, with the teachers pretending to love our nation, gushing over all the wonderful things President Snow has done for us. Everyone just goes along with it though, because no one wants to be seen as a traitor. Everyone saw what happened last year when Adrian Rossellini and her family were caught burning Panem flags inside their house. Peacekeepers came and the whole family was executed. They didn't tell us that of course. We were told they were taken to the capitol to learn 'loyalty', but we all knew.
BRIIIIIIIING!
Finally.
I grab my books, and shuffle out of the classroom with everyone else.
Deep in thought, I trudge down the hallway towards my next class, when suddenly, I am being shoved against a wall.
"Augh!" I drop my books, and attempt to fight against my attacker.
I peer up, and see Jack Golde smirking, with his idiotic cronies standing around.
"If it isn't the cyclops." Jack says smugly.
Anger boils up inside of me.
I lost my eye when I was ten years old. I used to have a friend, her name was Croslynn Benson. Every day, we would go into the woods behind my house, and play our favorite game. It involved throwing an axe at a large oak tree in the center of a clearing. We played it every day, and we played hard. We would stay at the clearing for hours, until we beat that tree up good. But eventually, we got bored of the poor tree, and decided to try something more dangerous. We knew that in a few years, we would be eligible for the Hunger Games, and we wanted to be ready. So we began throwing that axe at each other. We would never hit each other of course, at least not on purpose. But that game was bound to be a disaster, and one day, Croslynn's hand slipped, and that axe was hurled right at my face. I was able to duck enough, so I didn't die, but that axe left a nasty scar, and it caused me to lose my right eye. But Croslynn had it worse though. At our first reaping, she was picked, and died in the Bloodbath. I still miss her. And that's why I wasn't going to let Jack get away with calling me a cyclops. He has been picking on me for years, and it was going to stop now.
I awake from my daze, and leap at Jack.
"I'll kill you Jack!" I scream, throwing myself on top of him. His foolish friends try to intervene, but they aren't strong enough to pull me off of him. I clasp my hands around his throat, and he starts choking.
"L-let me go, psycho!" He gasps through strangled cries.
I hear rapid footsteps approaching and a woman's voice.
"Oh my goodness! What is going on here?!" Principal Whalina shrieks.
I get off of him, not before socking him in the stomach for good measure.
The principal helps Jack and I up before beckoning us to come with her.
"You two have some explaining to do."

"Oh man!" I think to myself, laughing through the pain of almost getting strangled. "When Mommy hears what Aurora did, she'll make sure she never sees the light of day again!" I laugh to myself, grinning. I touch my neck. Bruises.
I stamp my foot on the ground, frustrated. She had to leave bruises! Those'll take weeks to go away!
Tears well up in my eyes.
"I'm going to be so ugly at the reaping!" I yell out loud. Aurora turn around and smirks at me, while Whalina doesn't say anything.
When we get to the Principal's office, she opens the door, and motions for us to sit down.
"This is the principal's office?" I laugh. "My closet is bigger than this!"
"Please sit down, John."
I almost vomit all over the fake leather chair I'm sitting in. I hate when teachers call me John.
"My name is Jack!" I yell at her, my face reddening with embarrassment.
Whalina looks taken aback. She raises an eyebrow, as if to judge me.
"I wouldn't judge Whalina, you and I both know that if I wanted you gone, I could tell me parents, and you'd be gone."
Aurora rolls her eyes, and the principal ignores me.
"Okay, first order of business. What was that?!"
'Well I-" I begin, but Whalina cuts me off.
"Aurora first."
I scoff, as Cyclops starts talking out of her hole.
I don't even listen to half of what she says, all I hear is "blah, blah, blah." When will it be my turn? No one cares what she has to say. She's poor and starving, while I'm rich and handsome! Whalina should be asking me questions, not her.
When Aurora finally finishes with her story, which I'm sure is filled with bogus lies, it's my turn.
"Now Whalina-"
"Do not address me that way, Jack."
This woman is so ridiculous. Doesn't she know I'm better than she is? How can she talk down to me like that! Old hag.
"Okay, Principal. Whatever Cyc- I mean Aurora told you, don't believe it, she's lying. What happened is, I was walking down the hallway, trying to get to my next class when Aurora starts threatening to kill me! I am so scared for me life, I flee down the hallway, and some friends rush to my aid. But she is too aggressive, and she tackles me. She holds a knife to my throat, and then starts choking me. I think, Principal Whalina, that if you hadn't saved me, I would've died."
Whalina frowns.
"You both bring up interesting points. But I know the truth."
My chest tightens, probably from lack of oxygen after being strangled. "Does Whalina know I'm lying? Will Mommy find out? I start to sweat."
"Aurora, effective after the reaping tomorrow, you are suspended for sixteen days." Whalina announces.
"What!?" Aurora yells angrily.
I crack a smile.
Aurora runs out of the room, knocking her seat over in the process.
"Thank you for serving justice Principal." I nod to Whalina.
"Oh don't be a fool, boy." She says to me. "I know what happened, I was monitoring the cameras as soon as I heard a commotion. I know what you did Jack, but I like you, and I like your family, so I won't punish you. This can be our little secret." Whalina smiles.
"Alright." Is all I say, before exiting the room.

By the end of the day, everyone knows what Principal Whalina said to Jack about knowing the truth. Especially me. It's all I've heard since we left her office. Whalina's gone, and she knows it. I bet she is hoping the reapings will cause everyone to forget, and she will keep her job.

It's reaping day! I'm so excited! Two losers are going to be picked today to be slaughtered in the Hunger Games. I'm fine with it, because it's always poor kids that we don't need anyway.
"Oh Jacky, you look so handsome in you tuxedo!" Mommy squeals, tossling my hair.
"Ugh! God mom! Stop! You're going to mess up my hair! Idiot."
"I'm sorry Jacky! How about if I buy you ice-cream after the reaping today? Does that sound good?" She says kindly.
"Yes mommy." I smile. I love my mom.
By the time we get to the square, we are the last ones there. I expect heads to turn to look at us, but, they don't.
I frown.
I walk grumpily over to my age group, and end up standing next to some greasy homeless boy.
"God, of all people!" I complain aloud. "I hope you get picked." I say to the boy, if you can even call him that. I wrinkle my nose.
The kid turns away in shame.
I tap my foot impatiently.
"Hellooooo!?" I yell at no one in particular. "Can we get a move on!?"
"Hey." Homeless says from beside me.
"What?!" I snap.
"Shut up. You're annoying." He quips.
"Excuse me? Do you know who I am?" I ask, knowingly.
Hi pinches his nose.
"Excuse me?" He mocks me. "No. Do I look like I care who you are?" He scoffs, returning to his normal voice.
He stops his incessant babbling after a swift slap across the face.
He looks like he wants to fight, but he does nothing.
"Coward."
I look at him to get a reaction, but all I see is an eye twitch.
Too bad. I love it when unstable people burst.
Speaking of unstable people, I see Aurora walking towards the stage.
She must have been reaped. I cackle. Finally, that disgusting creature is gone!
"Yes!" I scream triumphantly into the air.
"And the male tribute for this year's games is…" Jack Golde!"
I smirk. Jokes on them. I will never be going to the games. Mommy will get me out of this, without a doubt.
I walk up to the stage confidently.

I'm laughing so hard right now. He has no idea how hard I will kill him when we get into the arena.
"Are you alright?" Lynette Paige, our escort asks me.
"Oh yes, I'm better than alright!" I giggle with every word.
"Jack, would you like to say anything?" Lynette asks.
"Yes, I would." Jack replies, taking the microphone from the escorts powdery hands.
"I, unfortunately will not be this years tribute." He says, confidently. "We must choose another."
"I'm sorry?" Lynette Paige asks, confused.
"I'm Jack Golde. I'm rich, so… I can't be picked." Jack states, matter-of-factly.
"That's not how this works, young man." Lynette says, leading us away.
Miss Linda leads us to a comfortable looking room, where I plop down on a beanbag.
Jack looks uncomfortable.
"Aurora?" He asks me.
"Yes Jack?" I reply, condescendingly.
"My mom can't get me out of this, can she?"
"No Jack." I say.
We sit in awkward silence for a while, before his parents burst into the room. There is a lot of crying, and a lot of kissing by the mother.
"Time's up." A peacekeeper says from the hallway.
"Oh I love you Jack!" She says as she leaves with her husband, in tears.
"Come back home son!" The dad squeaks, his voice cracking.
Jack begins to sob as the reality of the situation hits him. He's going into the Hunger Games.
It's nice to see him cry.
"Will you protect me Aurora?" He asks, through tears.
"Oh yes." I lie.
He doesn't realize how badly I am going to kill him.
