Chapter III

We Summon Julia…

Olivia was in a mood.

Ezra could tell when he spoke to her on the phone. Oh boy, what did Papa Pope and the raging trio do this time? he thought to himself.

Despite the awkwardness of her high school crush on him and the mortifying night of her almost deflowerment by him, they had remained friends. He remembered walking to school the next day, he had to walk because his car was still parked at Crawford Park, wondering how he could avoid Olivia in the hallways. He needn't have worried. He spotted her walking with Abby and as soon as she laid eyes on him she had run across the hallway to pull him into her arms and hug him. Abby was close on her heels wanting to share the love. She had spent weeks after that apologizing for being so caught up in herself that she hadn't realized what he was going through. There was no need for apologies. He hadn't been honest with her…hadn't been honest with himself until that night.

She was the first person he had come out to as gay; and she had been wonderful about it. Her acceptance of him, had given him… wings. He has gone home and come out to everybody. He remembered stopping at a seven-eleven on the way home from Crawford park. Out running Harold Pope had been hard work and it had left him parched. He had pulled a diet soda from the cooler walked over to the cashier and paid. On the way out, he turned and looked at the older black woman manning the register.

"I'm gay" he said without thinking. She had looked at him quiet, contemplative. Then finally she spoke

"Then own that shit baby. Do you!" she threw him a thumb up and went back to checking the next customer.

He had walked out of the store laughing like a maniac. Wow, acceptance from two different people in the same night…. he knew then…. he was going to be okay….

Olivia, Abby and he had stayed friends throughout college. He had majored in Psychology, Liv in Criminal Justice and Abby in Political Science. They had all come a long way, and he was glad to have their friendship every step of the way. He did sometimes wish he wasn't best friends with girls. Sometimes you needed another dude's opinion, but those are the cards he had been dealt and he was quite alright with them.

He looked at his watch. It was 6pm. He needed to call it a night. He picked up the phone and called Abby. She picked up on the first ring. Abby always picked up on the first ring.

"Hey"

"What's up Ez?"

"Liv, I spoke to her and I think something is going on"

"I know I spoke to her an hour ago, Is it the raging trio?" Abby asked

"What else…pick up Chinese and meet you at hers in…" Ezra looked down at his watch again. He had been too lost in thought the first time he looked down, the time had not registered. "in thirty minutes?"

"You betcha!" she chirped and hung up.

He picked up his coat and headed out of the office. I better pick up some wine too. He had a feeling the conversation might get heavy…

Should I be doing this? Maybe I don't have enough experience to do this…. E.J. may be right, this is not the case to wet my feet….

Olivia had been running worst case scenarios through her head all morning, and the doubts about her abilities and capabilities were crippling her. Fitz had dropped her off two hours ago and she hadn't moved off the couch. She just sat…sat and thought about…everything.

The doorbell to her apartment rang. She was so not in the mood for company so she ignored it. The bell rang a few more times before she heard the key turn in the lock.

Shit! It was either Abby or Ezra. They were the only two who had a key. She turned and saw two bodies enter… Yikes!

"Hey guys, what are you doing here?" she asked trying to sound nonchalant

"We brought you dinner and we're here to hear what the raging trio did this time" Abby said as she headed off to the kitchen to presumably grab plates and napkins.

Ezra had stopped by the couch and was now looking at her. She looked at him and plastered a fake smile on her face.

"Hi Ez. How they rolling?"

He didn't respond; just kept looking at her while she looked every which way but him. He counted down in his head. Five, four, three, two, and there she went… he watched as the tears run down her face.

"Tell me Liv" he sat next to her on the couch and pulled her in close for a hug. She crawled into his side and he heard the little hiccup sobs escaping.

"I suck…" she whispered out just as Abby came out the kitchen carrying a tray of wine and spring roll appetizers.

"You don't suck! Now tell Uncle Ezra and Aunty Abby what's wrong" he said….and so she did.

By the time she was done telling them about the case, she left out as much detail as possible, they had polished off the wine Ezra had brought and were on to a bottle from her wine collection… aka the bottles she kept on top of the fridge on a cheap Ikea wine rack.

"So, it sounds like you did a good job in the shooting thingy and the hand to hand thingy what's the problem?" Abby asked as she topped off everyone's glass

"He doesn't think I am sexy enough…."

Abby and Ezra paused mid-sip, and then both spoke out at the same time

"Bullshit" this from Ezra

"Not freaking possible…" from Abby

"He doesn't! he spent the whole ride home telling me how I am to reticent and not seductive enough to be the girlfriend of the thug he is pretending to be!"

"That rubbish you can be plenty shexy…sexy…" Abby said drunkenly.

Ezra was not as deep in the cups as she was and piped in "Well that depends…is he talking about Olivia Pope? Cause if he is…he's right"

Olivia gasped. She couldn't believe Ezra had just told her she wasn't sexy! How mean was that?!

"Olivia Pope daughter of Eli Pope, Sister to E.J, Brian and Harold Pope and also outstanding citizen of the District of Columbia is not sexy. She has the makings of sexy…but she ain't sexy!"

"Ezra, that is the unkindest thing you have ever said to me!"

"I did not say you were not sexy Olivia, I said this version of you…" he waved a hand over her "is not sexy…" he sipped more of his wine and then continued

"Now if you want to talk about Miss Julia …Miss Julia was hot! Miss Julia…Miss Julia was fire!" he said mock fanning himself.

Abby and Olivia turned towards him; shocked to hear a name they had not heard in years. The memories came flashing back at them. Abby remembered…Abby remembered and she squealed. Loud!

"Oh my god! I forgot about Julia…Julia was a fucking sexy bitch!"

Olivia was already shaking her head. No, no, no, no….

"No…No! Julia is dead! I decided that long ago, I will not be bringing her back" she said firmly

"But Liv…" Abby pleaded

She looked at Abby spread out on her carpet "No! That was a role I played for a drama class. I have no interest in playing that character again!"

"No, no Liv…don't you see she's perfect for this! Julia, is the conniving, manipulative, sexy bitch that Conner Maxwell would date!" Abby said excitedly "She brought every fucking man and a couple of women to their knees at Langley High! You need to do some Voodoo and summon that bitch up!"

Olivia shook her head again. No way! Playing that character had put her in some dark places. She played it too well. More than a few people had told her she ought to go into acting based on that role. She had declined. IT changed her…and not in a good way.

"Liv, Abby is right! Plus, as a licensed professional I can tell you that the reason you play that role so well is because she lets you escape from being buttoned down, boring, dull Olivia Pope…and that is a good thing.! Julia doesn't have the baggage that Olivia Pope does. Here's your chance to channel her in a way that will do you some good…and get you to break out of your shell!"

Olivia listened but was still doubtful. Julia had almost gotten her kicked out of high school. Julia produced a prodigious amount of sensuality and fearlessness that was worrisome to all who encountered her.

She had enjoyed playing the character so much she had somehow evolved from sedate Olivia to leave no fucking prisoners behind Julia.

She took another sip of her drink….and then another.

Julia was a cold-hearted temptress. She was the kind of woman Fitz was talking about. Should could let her loose….

Julia didn't take half-measures, if she took control now, there would be no telling where or how far she could take this….

"Bring out Julia!…. Bring out Julia!…. Bring out Julia!" Olivia turned to face Abby who was drunkenly chanting. She looked at Ezra and he lifted his shoulders…the decision was up to her….

To Julia or not to Julia…. hmm…That indeed was the question….

To be continued on Chapter IV. …. Say hello to Julia…. Hmm...
