Project Demi

Chapter 3

A throat cleared behind me, breaking me out of my silent victory.

"Sir, no go. The whole level's flooded." That voice that sent chills stated from her place at my right hand side. I had to keep myself from turning to her and making the best of our time here.

Instead, I focused on a blonde haired, blue eyed male leaning against a wall. He wasn't in gear like the others, and was wearing a suit. I didn't recognize him, so he most certainly wasn't a Hive worker. Well, he probably wasn't a Hive worker. He might not have been a Hive worker. I really don't know, I'm terrible with faces and names unless I see them every day. He had flinched when Rain spoke out, his head whipping around to face her. And judging by the slightly inquisitive look in Alice's eyes, I'm not the only one who noticed. Once he got over the shock, he slowly looked to the vent that was above him.

I titled my head in confusion. I couldn't see anything or hear anything-oh shit. Well that's just not good. At least three have awoken.

"Alright, we're behind schedule. So let's move it." The commanding officer's voice tore me out of my panic.

After he said this, everyone started moving, following some guy who was using something to get us to some place. I stayed back until I was beside Alice. She gave me a confused look but didn't protest, thankfully. Even with her memory wiped, I have no doubt that she could kick my ass. Rain and J.D. kept their position at the back, behind Alice, Spence and I. I heard Rain mutter 'poor bastards' behind me, but thinking about these people dying had pain shooting through my heart, so I ignored it.

"Alice, are you okay?" I questioned.

"Is that my name? Who are you? How do we know each other?" her questions came in rapid fire, but a calm rapid fire. Like everything else she does. I swear the world could be ending and it would still seem like she just finished meditating. Although her cool personality eased some tension out of my shoulders, I felt a prickle of annoyance. Normally she would make a snarky comment, then I would snark back, and somehow we would end up snarking about sex, or Spence, or Umbrella. This seemed like a cheap imitation of my friend.

The Alice I knew was self-sacrificing to a fault. She hid her emotions well. She wouldn't let you know if she was hurt-which is a real pain in the ass, by the way. Once she deems you worthy, she would do anything to keep you safe. She never showed when she was scared. I knew her well enough to usually see the emotions she hides, but she gets an A for effort.

This Alice was terrified. You could see the shaking in her hands, the fear in her eyes. Hell, I could practically smell the fear on her. She was shivering-even with Spence's jacket on-and I would've given her my coat, but that wouldn't end so well. This Alice isn't the same. She couldn't fight a fly, much less fight for her life.

"It's times like this where I really hate Umbrella's precautionary measures. Yes, Alice is your name. I'm Demi. We've known each other since I was 18, when you started working at the Hive. It's been seven years." I made my voice low, keeping up with the whole shock-victim-thing going on.

"Do you know me?" Spence's annoying voice questioned.

"Yup." I popped the p just to annoy him. He flinched just like I knew he would.

"Care to share with the class?" Alice questioned with a small smirk on her face. Even though she doesn't remember it, making Spence squirm was our favorite pastime.

"Nope." I grinned my Cheshire cat grin at her. My smile only grew larger when I got a chuckle out of not only her, but the sexy soldier behind me. A small chuckle, but a chuckle none the less. It was deep and throaty, like I thought it would be.

Spence made an annoyed noise in the back of his throat and sped up to get in front of us.

"He's always been an ass. I still can't believe you slept with him. I still can't believe my ex slept with him. I would say you both have poor taste, but she chose to go out with me… so that wouldn't be too smart." I sent a sarcastic grin to Alice, making her smile.

"Have-have we ever…?" she trailed off awkwardly, a confused look on her face.

"Have we ever what?" I just really like being a nuisance.

"You know."

"No, I don't know. I have not matured past eight years old." I spoke in a deadpan.

She laughed shakily and went to shove my arm, but thought better of it. This sobered me up, and my smile dropped. Alice has a problem with being touched. Just not with her friends or those she trusts. She's like me in that aspect. I don't know what annoys me more; the fact that she wouldn't touch me, or that she doesn't remember that she trusts me with her life.

"No, Alice, we never slept together. You are, sadly, straight." I chuckled to her, ignoring the pain and annoyance at the situation. "Doesn't mean I didn't try." I grinned.

She laughed in response before nodding. We walked for a while before she spoke up again.

"So…" she trailed off in thought, a look of confusion covering her face.

"So what?" I questioned, looking away from her. I might sound needy, but Alice was my best friend, she's my rock. I was so hateful when she met me, and she just… had a way with me. A completely platonic way. She helped me let go of some of my anger. Yes, I still want to fucking kill Albert Whesker, but it's not an inferno of hate in the pit of my stomach anymore. I just need justice for him ruining my life. I have no doubt that I can survive, but Alice would make that feat much easier.

Anyway, this imitation of Alice is just annoying me.

"What am I like? What are we like? What do I do here?"

"You're a loser, we are losers, and you do what losers do." when those words came out of my mouth she looked so confused, I couldn't help but burst out laughing.

"I was being serious about the first two. We're both losers, it's why we get along so well. But you worked for security. You were supposed to become head after Bridge retired."

"And you?" a different, throatier, voice came from behind me. I paused in shock and turned to see Rain staring at me, a single eyebrow raised.

"Me? Well I'm just lucky to be here." I gave her a grin. She chuckled back at me, glancing from me to the ground and back. "Seriously? I used to work in the labs. Nowhere in particular, just wherever they had need of me. I don't actually have a set job, or workplace here. Sometimes I work in security, sometimes in the labs. It depends."

"Depends on what?" Rain asked, staring intently at me.

"Whoever needs me more. But that all seems irrelevant now." I gave her a small smile before turning around. "Where are we going, anyway?" I asked no one in particular.

"Dining Hall B." J.D. spoke up from behind me. I turned to him slightly and gave him a look.

"You guys know that I work here, right? And I have my memory? I could've led you there."

Not a single one of the soldiers responded, just gave me looks that said shut up.

Well then. Rude.

Okay, so I just realized that I never technically put a disclaimer here, so…..

I DO NOT OWN RESIDENT EVIL. I WISH I DID, BUT I DON'T. THE ONLY THING I OWN IS DEMI.

That goes for the whole story because I really don't feel like putting that in every chapter.
