Chapter Two
Christmas 1981
It was the new parents, first Christmas without Lily and James Potter and their son, Harry's first Christmas without his parents. Remus and Sirius tried not to think of this and concentrated on trying to make Christmas fun for their godson. The young pair was helping the now seventeen month old boy open his presents. They were delighted when he gave a little shriek of delight when his first present was opened. It was a large cuddly snitch toy which the Weasley family, they had been friends of Harry's parents as well as Sirius and Remus, had sent over. The Weasleys had a young boy about the same age as Harry. The child wrapped his arms around the toy and sent Remus and Sirius a look that dared them to try and take the toy away from them. The two Marauders laughed.
"MINE!" Harry cried. Remus and Sirius smiled at him, they knew they were spoiling him but they couldn't help it.
"Yes, yours" Sirius agreed. Harry smiled and his emerald green eyes shone with happiness. With Harry determined to keep hold of his snitch toy it was up to Remus and Sirius to open the rest of his presents, showing him each in turn. They themselves had gotten Harry lots of toys and clothes. Albus Dumbledore had sent a present by owl for Harry, it was a model of the moon and Harry's eyes widened in excitement when it rose and actually began shining. "It will make a decent night light" Remus pointed out and Sirius agreed. Harry now had his own room. There was already a night light but his guardians decided the moon model would be a better one. Soon the moon stopped glowing and sank gently back down to the floor. Harry clapped his hands happily.
...
After all of Harry's presents had been opened and brightly coloured paper littered the floor in the lounge room, it was time for lunch. Remus headed into the kitchen to serve the food and lay it out on the dining table, while Sirius picked Harry up and carried him through to the kitchen and placed him in his highchair and tied his bib around his neck, as he flapped his arms.
"Here you go, little man" Remus said as he deposited a small plate with bunnies dancing around the rim. The plate contained carefully portioned and chopped up pieces of turkey, peas, carrots, Yorkshire pudding and mashed potato, for the toddler. Sirius picked up the small spoon and scooped up a small amount mash and offered it to Harry, while he dived into his turkey with his fingers. Meanwhile, Remus was loading a plate for Sirius and himself.
"Here we are" He said brightly placing a heaped plate beside Sirius as he fed their son.
"Thanks Moony. You're such as domestic goddess!" He joked and ducked as Remus took a swipe at him with a wet tea towel. Harry laughed and flicking a couple of peas onto the floor in his excitement. "But no really, this is delicious" Sirius said as he tucked in enthusiastically. A light blush dusted Remus' face at the compliment.
"I'm glad you like it," he said smiling, "and you seem to like it to little man" he cooed at Harry.
...
When they had finished lunch they used the floo powder to travel to the Weasleys house as they decided it was high time Harry was introduced to their children. When they arrived there they received an enthusiastic greeting from Molly Weasley.
"Merry Christmas!" They announced as they walked in.
"Sirius, Remus, it's good to see you," she said cheerily.
"It's good to see you too, Molly," Remus said.
"And you brought Harry as well. The other boys are down in orchard" referring to her four, other sons, "but Ronnie is in the lounge and Arthur is putting Ginny down for a sleep upstairs." she referred to her, youngest son and four month old daughter.
"Wonderful" Sirius carried him through to the lounge while Remus stayed in the kitchen to talk to Molly. Sirius entered the crowded living area, many overstuffed seats and a three seater couch in off-white were wedged around the edges, a scrawny Christmas tree stood in the corner near a second fireplace, this one was not hooked up to the floo network like the one in the kitchen. There were a couple of hemp bags filled with wrapping litter, bright paper, ribbons and empty envelopes. Sirius set Harry down on the rug next to a small red headed boy, just a little older then Harry.
"Merry Christmas, Ronnie" he said.
"Pa'foo" the child said with a giggle. The two boys eyed each other and Sirius watched them gaging their reactions. Harry smiled at the boy and picked up a bright red block from Ron's pile. The redhead baby didn't seem too worried and the two children were soon busy playing with building blocks. Satisfied that his godson was alright, he ducked back into the kitchen. Remus turned when he heard Sirius enter the room.
"How's Harry?" he asked. Sirius smiled.
"His fine, he's playing with Ron," He assured him "Ronnie's getting big, how old is he now?" He spoke to Molly.
"He is twenty-one months now," Molly said excitedly, "hay, have you spent much time with your cousin, Narcissa?" she asked.
"Ah…yeah, Uncle Cygnus' youngest" He reminisced, "we spent some summer's together when we were younger"
"Oh, well she married Lucius Malfoy" she paused for affect; Sirius nodded "She has a wee boy, Harry's age too" Remus and Sirius appeared surprised. "I believe they called him…Draco I believe. Perhaps you'd like to introduce them"
"Could do…" Sirius looked to Remus "It would be good for Harry to have some more friends"
"Sure, I don't see why not." Remus agreed.
...
They spent several hours at the Weasleys house and ended up going home near tea time. As they had had a big Christmas lunch Remus just made some soup for them. While they were eating Harry let out a yawn. His guardians chuckled.
"Sounds like it's someone's bedtime," Remus said. They finished eating and Sirius picked Harry up and carried him to his room. Remus followed behind them carrying Harry's presents. He watched as his best friend tucked Harry in and then activated the moon light that Dumbledore had sent. The two best friends took some time to admire the light before heading back downstairs. They settled down in the sitting room and Sirius got a fire going. Remus collapsed into an armchair while Sirius spread himself out over a sofa. They spent a few minutes in comfortable silence before Remus spoke up.
"I'm glad that Harry had a nice time today," he said. A small somewhat sad smile graced his best friend's face.
"Me too," Sirius murmured. He sighed. "James and Lily should have been there with him," he said sadly. Remus' face clouded over briefly in sorrow too.
"I'm sure they're watching over us," he replied gently. That made Sirius smile.
"Yes," he agreed, "and we have our memories." That set the two off talking about the times they'd had will Lily and James at school. They laughed at memories from when Lily refused to go out with James. They reminisced about the pranks they had played and even their escapades during the full moon when James and Sirius would take their animagus forms to keep Remus company. Neither of them mentioned Peter Pettigrew. The last they had heard of him was that the aurors were still out looking for him. Remus had asked if Sirius had planned to rejoin the aurors and he said that he would as soon as Harry was a bit older. They had also talked about what Remus could do. Remus was interested in working with other werewolves and was considering teaching children with lycanthropy. Sirius had thought this was a brilliant idea. It was close to midnight before Remus and Sirius finally headed off to bed. They stopped by Harry's room to check that his was alright. They were relieved to see that he was sleeping peacefully. They continued on to their rooms and bid each other good night. They fell asleep with fond thoughts of the Christmas they had had with Harry.
