Chapter Three – Reunited

Bella POV

When the door opened, Alice was standing there. I had been dealing with how hard it was living without him; I didn't even realize that almost half of it was the absence of Alice. I had lost my soul mate and a best friend. When I saw her face, gazing up at mine, my knees buckled and I fell into her, tears streaming from my cheeks. Jasper was standing behind Alice, and I had a flashback of the last time I saw him. Alice carried me over to the couch, and I sank into it.

"Bella, we need you're help." Alice informed me after we got past the tearful reunion. I stared up at her with surprised eyes. What would they need my help with?"

"Now, this might be painful for you, but Edward…" She began, but I cried out, clutching my torso. Alice and Jasper exchanged an alarmed glance.

"Bella, are you okay?" She asked, concerned.

"No, I'm fine." I assured them after a couple deep breaths. "It's just…please don't say his name. it hurts too much." Alice looked distraught. I felt a wave of calm envelope me, but my arm didn't budge. "I don't think any calm is going to heal this, Jasper, but thanks for trying." I did my best to smile at him.

"Well," Jasper explained. "We would actually need you to…come and see my brother." He looked at me doubtfully. I felt elated after a second. "Why do you feel happy?" He asked me, confused. Alice mirrored his frown.

Wasn't it obvious? "I get to see…him…again?" I asked, my voice breaking. I couldn't let myself hope. "I mean, I know he doesn't like me anymore, but…"

"You honestly think that Edward doesn't like you anymore?" Alice cut in.

"I'm only a human, Alice." I laughed once without humor. "He was right. He can do better than me." I put my head between my knees.

"Oh. God." Jasper breathed.

"Bella," She began to say something, then stopped. She went for a softer tone. "Edward is in just as much pain as you are, or worse. Believe me. Losing you was just as hard for him as losing him was for you." I didn't allow myself to understand. I couldn't hope… "He only left to protect you. He didn't want to endanger your life anymore." The words began to process. He still wanted me?

"But I'm not safe here!" I blurted. "Vampires still came back for me!" I tried to tell them about Laurent.

"We aren't going to hurt you, Bella." Jasper whispered. "I know I was terrible…last time...but I won't lose control. I feel awful."

"Not you!" I interrupted. "And Alice was supposed to tell you that I wasn't angry at you, and that I didn't blame you. I'm talking about…" I bit my lip. "Do you remember Laurent and Victoria?" I asked, knowing that they did. Alice's eyes narrowed, and Jasper looked bemused.

"Well," I told them. "I know it was stupid, but I went back to the meadow that he showed me, you know, just to remember him, and Laurent was there. He was about to kill me, but then massive, horse sized wolves chased him out of the clearing. Before the wolves showed up though, he told me that he would kill me then because he was thirsty, and that I should thank him. He told me that this would be an easy death compared to what Victoria had planned for me. James was her mate and…Edward…" I forced the name out, and Alice and Jasper winced at how much pain it cost me. "Killed him. She wanted, as he put it, 'mate for mate.' She didn't know that it wasn't like that anymore with us."

Alice's nostrils flared. "Did you say…wolves?" she asked. She sniffed my shoulder. "Gross!" She cried, recoiling. "Werewolves." She nodded.

What?! Vampires, werewolves…what next? Fairies and griffons? Honestly!

"This is almost…good though!" Jasper smiled. I looked at him as if he had lost his mind. "Listen! If Edward thinks Bella is being hunted by vengeful vampires, what do you think he'll do?"

"Come back." Alice whispered. "Bella?" She turned to me. "Will you do this for me? For us? For my brother?"

How could she doubt my answer?

"Of course."

The next one will be in Jasper's POV. I'll write if I get a couple more reviews.
