"The beginning, I guess, is always an ideal place to begin. I met you before our first year actually began, though, I didn't know who you were or what house you'd be in. You were pretty normal...I thought."
"You thought? How quickly did I change?" Hermione asked, a frown playing heavily on her lips.
"Well...when I met you at Madam Malkin's, you were getting your first set of robes. Neither of your parents had been there, and I was alone. Um, so I had asked for your name, to start a conversation...you know? You said I was..." Draco blushed and bowed his head uncertainly, not entirely interested in continuing, glancing up he saw the look of distraught anticipation in her eyes. "...um, we can skip that. Needless to say, you were well worded, a vernacular above your years."
"Be honest, please."
He frowned, but nodded all the same. "You said I was a delicious species of...Veela."
Hermione blushed, "I'd never! I was only eleven!"
"I'm well aware, and trust me when I say, it took me off guard as sure as it did you just now." He smiled, his eyes still watching her from beneath his platinum blonde hair. He shook his head and continued, "I said nothing after that, but you weren't done. You had much more to say, actually. Talked a lot about your mother and father, how they couldn't be there with you due to their jobs. You mentioned they were well known in the...Muggle world. Um, highly thought of philanthropists and business tycoons."
Hermione felt her head spinning, her whole body quaking under every revelation that was uttered by her Slytherin nemesis. 'My parents are...rich!?'
"You were very...audacious...and, um...maybe a bit...saucy?"
"Audacious and saucy..." Her cheeks were becoming dank under the harsh and highly controversial descriptive adjectives that were used to depict her personality.
"If it's any consolation...most people find confidence...attractive?"
Hermione scoffed, "you don't seem so sure. Not that it matters. As a young lady, I can tell you personally that being called saucy is anything but flattering."
He shrugged and tore his eyes away from Hermione, "if you're going for flattery, then why have you slept with most of the male populace at Hogwarts?"
"...slept...with..." Hermione's eyes widened in horror, scared of what she'd just heard. "How dare you!" Hermione's voice rose in pitch, standing so quickly that the chair she'd been in fell backwards with a loud clatter.
Draco became ashen with the sudden change in her tone. He also stood, but his hands fell to his side in a nervous form of retreat. "What are you so upset over? Hell, you bloody well gloat over the fact every chance you get!"
"I-I would never lower myself to sleeping around! It's disgusting! Immoral! DEPRAVED AND NEFARIOUS!"
"I'm impressed that you can give me so many synonyms for the word corrupt, however, I hardly believe that calling you nefarious is fair. I mean...so you're a little-"
"Watch it Malfoy! Or I'll turn you into a Ferret before you can say Salazar!"
Draco laughed, "you're failing transfiguration, Hermione, I hardly think you'd be able to preform such a complex human to animal transformation spell."
'Failing?!' The horror stricken look on her face had confused Draco greatly.
"Um...if you don't need me anymore, we have...potions...next?" He tilted his head as gravity took hold of Hermione and her legs gave out from beneath her. 'I'm so confused. Which part hurt her more? Finding out that she's loose or finding out that she's failing?!' He sighed, moving in front of her, he held his hand out for the girl who was on the floor staring past him with a lost stare.
Hermione brought her brown eyes up to Draco as tears had pooled into her eyes. "I don't understand, how...this could possibly be me." She closed her eyes, letting his words echo through her head as if on repeat. Hermione brought a hand up to her cheek as her tears began falling. A slightly damp line had been paved by her tears that didn't seem to have an end in sight.
"Look, let's just go to class, after Potions, Slytherin and Gryffindor house have Double Transfigurations class together. Then we will have a free period and can...um, talk more?"
Hermione stared at his hand for a second before nodding and taking his hand as if it were a lifeline. As Draco pulled her into a standing position, she held tight to his hand. Something that he couldn't comprehend as he frowned while staring at the hand in his. In a daze of disarray, he turned with a broken down Hermione walking beside him in silence. He had his bag, but hadn't seen hers, so he just kept on towards Potion's.
'Everyone is staring...at me...' Hermione tightened her grip on Draco's hand as he just continued walking. She frowned as the students turned their scoffs and judgmental eyes onto Draco. Biting her lip, she closed her eyes and made to release his hand, but he only tightened his around hers.
"Let them stare, they'll do it whether you are holding my hand or walking alone on your own. For now...just...hold my hand and...and I'll keep you strong."
"...Malfoy..."
"Until you feel you can cope with reality as it is...I'll be here."
