I walked behind them from the restaurant to Java Jones. I was in a whole different world right now. I don't really think I was thinking about anything, I just realized how upset I was that I probably upset my dad and that always managed to get to me. Whether he thought I knew it or not, I knew he was proud of me and he always has been. I didn't want to let him down but how could he just think I wouldn't be upset that they wanted to move all of us. I'd still be with Clary but it wouldn't be the same.
I think Simon was trying to talk to me, but I couldn't look at him. There was something making me look towards the shops across the street. I couldn't tell you what it was but I did think I saw a flash of perfectly blond hair.
I had to force myself to look to Java Jones otherwise I'd run straight into the door. I walked in and saw Eric was already onstage, Matt behind him beating on a djembe. "Is he stoned?" I asked Simon and Clary snorted.
"Which one?" She asked. I laughed at her response. Eric didn't look too all-there either. I wasn't sure how I felt about the dip-dyed pink tips and the squinting look wasn't helping. "This is ridiculous." Clary turned towards me while grabbing on to Simon's sleeve and my wrist. "This is going to suck, let's go before he sees us." I laughed at her as Simon squared his shoulders.
"I promised and I am a man of my word." He huffed and you could see it in his eyes that he wished nothing more than to take Clary up on her offer. "You two find us a seat and I'll get the drinks."
"You're gonna carry three drinks by yourself?" I asked him. He nodded at me. I shrugged and Clary told him that she wanted coffee as black as her soul. "Are you fucking serious?" I asked her in a hushed voice while laughing a little louder than I liked. It surely alerted Eric that we were here. "Oops. Now we really can't leave."
"You bitch." Clary hunched over, starting to lead the way. Simon grabbed my shoulder before I could follow.
"Do you want a drink?" He asked me. I looked over at him, completely forgetting that he had even said he'd get it.
"Uh... yeah. Something with chocolate in it." I shrugged.
"They don't sell chocolate things her, nerd." He laughed.
"Oh," I pulled a ten out of my pocket and handed it to Simon. "Give this to Jeffrey and tell him Lila wants the usual and ask him if he could have someone bring it over so you don't have to carry all of it." I smiled at him and he looked stunned. He gave me the look of 'you will explain when I come to sit down' and turned towards the coffee bar and walked away.
Clary was already sitting in a love seat in the back corner of the shop. I went and sat down next to her, "This seat is big enough for all three of us, barely, but if you wanted, you could always sit on Simon's lap." I winked at her and she chuckled. She always thought I was kidding but every one could see the way he looked at her but her. I always wondered if I ever had anyone like that but thinking about it, I didn't think so.
"Har har. No way." She laughed. Simon walked over and sat in the middle of us. "Where are the drinks?" She asked him.
"Apparently, Lila has some explaining to do because the second I gave the man a ten and said it was from her, he blushed like a tomato and handed me five dollars back, saying that ten was too much from a girl like her." He looked at me with a smirk as he handed me back a five.
"That just explains that Lila, as always, knows everyone. That doesn't explain why you came over here empty handed with a five dollar bill to show for it." Clary said, shrugging.
"Oh, she gave me a ten, telling me to go tell the guy at the coffee bar that it was hers and to get her 'the usual' and to have someone bring it over." He looked towards the woman bringing the coffee and tilted his head towards her. "Here it is now."
"Black coffee?" She asked. Clary raised her hand like a girl in school and I had to smile at that. She was always so innocent. The waitress handed Simon's his coffee and looked kind of confused as to how she knew that was his and the nodded in acknowledgment when she turned towards me and smiled. "Everyone here knows that Lila is the only one here who ever gets this." She handed my coffee and I smiled back at her.
"Thank you, Sarah." She nodded her head and walked away, the tray in front of her.
"You really do know everyone." Simon said.
"So why did the coffee guy blush?" Clary said, smiling.
"Because we dated like a million years ago." I laughed when Simon and Clary looked at me. They were more than a little shocked. "Calm down, I'm just kidding! He's like 35." Clary looked at the guy.
"Are you sure he's that old." I looked at him and I really didn't know how old he was but something just made me know.
"He's twenty-three." I looked back at Clary and she nodded.
"I could see that." She sat back and I was still kind of on edge from yesterday but thinking about everything that's happened in my life, I'm surprised I wasn't a genius. I just knew things. I couldn't tell you how but I just looked at things or people and I knew things about them that I really shouldn't. I looked at Eric and shuddered. Somehow, I knew that he was the master of getting into girl's pants and who they were, even though I've never heard of any one saying they've ever had sex with him. Maybe they were embarrassed. I smiled inwardly to myself.
Then, it was like the feeling from outside washed over me again. I just wanted to look up and stare of in some odd direction that was a way from all the commotion just to see if he was there. Of course, I had a for sure reason to do that this time. I heard a loud cough, but not that 'I'm sick' cough. More like, 'look at me now' cough. I knew Clary heard it too because she looked over to the same direction at the same time I did. I wish she hadn't though. I wanted to look at him all my own.
It was Him.
He was sitting on a green sofa a few feet away from us in the same clothes he was in last night. There were faint white lines all over his uncovered skin, like scars that were never going to go away. He was looking intently at me for a moment before turning to Clary then smirking. Always Clary, I thought to myself. Except, I think this was one time I didn't mind it. His smirked didn't really seem to be towards her, not in the kind of way I would want it for me. He seemed to be laughing but I wasn't completely sure at what.
"What are we looking at?" Simon asked, looking in the direction of the angel boy, obviously not seeing him sit there. The boy raised his hand and waved at us before walking towards the door, swiftly and as casually as someone of his form would ever be able to.
I looked at Clary and she shared the look with me. She stood up, "I'll be right back." She gave a small glance towards me and she was on her way out the door.
"I'm going to go see where she went." I followed her out the door and I could feel Simon's confusion on the back of my head, watching as we left him sit there.
I pushed on the door slightly after passing through to to make it close just a little bit faster. I turned and I saw that Clary was already in a conversation with him. "Clary sage. In the old days people thought eating the seeds would let you see the fair folk." He looked at me then. "What's your name? She's told me hers and so far she seems to be like any other mundane, with the sight of course."
"Lila." I said. "You said 'fair folk', like werewolves, vampires, warlocks, demons and things like that?" He seemed kind of pleased.
"I've never heard the name Lila before, is it short for something?" He ignored my question.
"It is but I couldn't tell you what. No one will even tell me." I shrugged. I never really cared about it, I thought Lila was good enough.
"Well, it seems that you both have the sight. I want you both to come with me." He said.
"I don't think that's the best idea." Clary said. And as much as I didn't want to, I had to agree.
"We don't even know your name. How do you expect us to just trust you?" He looked amused with us.
"My name is Jace. It sure is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Let's go now." He smiled and he turned to walk away. Clary's phone began to ring. I saw her pick it up and I kept the conversation going with Jace, wanting to know more.
"Why do you want us to come with you?" I asked him.
He looked at me. I wish I could tell what he was thinking but that wasn't something I could make happen all the time. "You both seem like regular mundanes, excluding the purple coming from the top of your head, and yet you both have the sight. No mundane has known about us for at least a hundred years and my tutor, Hodge, wants to meet you both." I was going to reply when I heard Clary yelling at her phone. It wasn't mad, more like worried.
"Mom?!" She yelled. She threw her phone at the wall, smashing it. "Shit." She said before turning to us. "Let me use your phone." She grabbed the thing that Jace was playing with and took it from him. "Its not a phone." He wasn't wrong. It looked like it could have been once until some crazy kid came along and tore it up and turned it into something new. She shook her head and looked at me, "I have to go, something is wrong." She said before running off.
The night had taken over quicker than I had expected. Something about this time always made me really happy though. I'd probably never be able to tell you what but I do know, that this was the time when I was most awake. I never really slept because of it. I slept from dawn until noon every day and maybe a nap during lunch time at school.
This was a good time to be awake because Clary had run off and seeing her disappear into the shadows gave me the urge to follow her. I turned towards Jace, watching him watch me. I felt very calm but whenever I looked at him, everything seemed to slow down and speed up all at the same time. "If you really want to help, find us at her house. I'm sure that won't be too hard for you to do."
I knew he wanted to help, my genius coming through again, I just knew what he was thinking and what he wanted. Maybe, he just wanted it bad enough for me to know what was happening inside his head. Either way, I started running towards the Clary's home, the place I knew she was going. I seemed to go into a hyper-speed. Everything going fast as I passed it. I just wanted to follow Clary to make sure she was okay.
