Chapter 3: Preparation
The next morning I woke up with only one thought in mind: What is going to happen tonight? I had been pondering over that question ever since I had gotten back from track the day before. Even though I wasn't 100% sure the letter I received was genuine, I had decided that it would be best to get ready and act like I was going to the ball—just in case someone from Black Butler did happen to show up at my doorstep. I wasn't sure what my parents and siblings would think about this, but one thing was definite: I had to be ready for this thing.
As the day went on, time seemed to fly by. My school work didn't even take that long to get through. And pretty soon it was 4:00. Time go get ready, I thought. I grabbed my computer and went into the kitchen where my mom was.
''Mom?'' I called as I entered the room
''What is it Cynthia?'' she asked.
''Well, you see, I have this really big math project I need to complete, and I want to work on it in my room so I don't get distracted.''
''Alright. How long do you think you'll be?'' my mom asked.
''Um…probably a few hours.'' I said.
''Okay. Just make sure you finish it up before dinner.''
I nodded. Although realistically, I didn't know how long I was going to be…or if I was even going to be home for that matter.
''Can you make sure no one comes in my room?'' I asked.
''Of course.'' my mom responded.
''Thanks!'' I walked into my room and shut the door. I put the computer on my bed and opened up my closet door. What the heck am I supposed to wear to this thing? I thought as I scanned the racks of clothes. It wasn't like I owned genuine ball attire, or any Victorian style dresses for that matter. I shuffled through a pile of dresses I had previously worn to see if any of them came close to what would be considered ''appropriate attire'' to wear to this kind of an event. However, none of them did.
So after ripping apart practically half of my closet, I forced myself to pick a dress that I thought would somewhat fit the occasion. It was a sleeve-less black dress with pink and yellow floral print on it. It had an open back, and came down to just above the knee. I paired it with a white cardigan and some black flats. It wasn't exactly the most modest thing to wear to a ball, but it would have to do. I quickly fixed my hair and put on my make-up. I also made sure I put on my half of the best friend necklace me and Katie shared. I wore it anytime I went out somewhere, (except when exercising at track of course) as it symbolized mine and Katie's friendship.
Then I checked the clock—it read 4:30. That means I have 15 minutes to go, I thought. I opened my bedroom window and looked outside. If someone was going to show up, I was going to see them this time no matter what.
But before I knew it, a half hour past and no one had showed up. The letter had said to be ready by 4:45, and now it was 5:00. I guess that letter really was a fake after all, I thought with a slight disappointment. I walked away from the window and plopped down on my bed next to my computer. So much for getting dressed up. I got all exited for nothing.
I opened up the internet tab and stared blankly at my computer screen. I felt so stupid. Here I thought I was actually going to get to meet the characters from Black Butler, and all I ended up doing was wasting a half hour getting all dressed up, only to stare outside of my bedroom window. As I leaned back and waited for the computer screen to load, I let out a loud yawn. I was a lot more tired than I had thought. It's probably because I spent the majority of last night thinking about the ball that I was going to attend instead of sleeping. I laid back on my pillows and I sighed. Maybe I should just take a nap, I thought. I had told my mom I would be in my room for a few hours anyway, so if I just dozed off for an hour, no one would even notice. I closed my eyes, and drifted off to sleep.
However, when I awoke, I realized I was no longer laying in my bed. I was in a carriage.
Author's Note: A big thank you goes out to whoever is reading this! I promise the Black Butler characters will be in the next chapter, and it will be a lot longer then this one as well.
