Next morning Rain woke up due to sunlight hitting her eyelids, so she slowly opened them to see that she was still in her uncle's office and with him sitting in a chair by the table, doing paperwork. Noting movement, Kaien raised his eyes to look at the girl.
„Ah, you are awake. Sorry, did I wake you up?" The ex-hunter asked to which Rain shook her head. Seeing the girl's reply he smiled and continued: „Today we'll see what you remember to see what you know and what you need to learn."
The brunette only nodded her head not knowing how else to reply. Kaien stood up and gestured with his hand for the girl to follow him, smile adorning his lips. The chairman led the girl to a bathroom and opened the door for the girl to enter.
"You can take a warm bath, while I prepare something to eat for you. I've put your uniform on a hanger for you to change into." Kaien said and closed the door after the girl, after which he went to the kitchen to prepare a late breakfast for his 'niece'.
While the ex-hunter put the dishes out on the table, he heard footsteps coming in the room, so he raised his head to see Rain dressed in the uniform but with the ribbon untied, simply being around her neck.
"Here, let me help you tie the ribbon. Watch how I do it, so that you could do that yourself later on." Kaien said, going to the girl and tied the ribbon in an appropriate manner all while Rain's eyes were on his hands. Once done with the ribbon the adult took a few steps back to look at the girl with a critical eye to see if anything else needed to be fixed. The look made the girl fidget. Seeing that, the chairman smiled and pulled one of the chairs out for his 'niece' to sit in.
"Have a seat. I hope you enjoy your breakfast." Kaien said, waiting for Rain to take the seat, which she did. Looking at the table, Rain saw table full of different dishes, making her wonder how did the man prepare all of it in such a short time, but decided not to voice it out, fearing to upset her uncle. After pushing his new niece's chair to the table, he took a seat opposite of her.
After silent breakfast, Kaien took her to her new room and left her there to explore, while saying that he would be right back. The room was simple – a bed, wardrobe, a chest of drawers, table with a lamp on it and chair by it. There were no doors other than the one behind her back which lead outside of the room.
She opened the wardrobe to see a spare uniform hanging in it, so she closed it, letting her eyes wander around, but her thoughts drifted to the sad eyes of Kuran Kaname and her uncle. She wanted to know the reason, but didn't know how to ask about it without hurting them in the process. Clearly, it was a very sensitive subject to both of them.
After a while there was a loud knock, more like a boom, against the door, so she opened the door to see two piles of books in front of her. After stepping aside, the two piles were carried inside. One of the piles was carried by her uncle, while the other was carried by another person, who she didn't know. Once the piles were put on the table, both males turned to her.
"Rain-chan, this is Sachiko Yami. He is a prefect of this academy." Kaien introduced the boy, so she studied him with her eyes. Compared to the chairman, the boy was quite short, but still taller than her. He had short brown chopped hair and green eyes. He was also wearing a uniform, only male version of it.
The girl bowed slightly towards the prefect, only for him to dismiss it with a wave of his hand, saying "No need to be so formal. Since you are the chairman's niece, you can call my simply Yami."
However, as he said that, he walked past her, not seeing her nod her head.
"Don't mind him, he is always like that." The Chairman said to the girl, to disperse any negative thought that might have appeared in the brunette's head. As a response, the girl nodded her head again.
"I want you to look through these books and later bring me the books which holds things you don't remember." Kaien explained, putting one of his hands on a pile of books.
"What are they about?" Rain asked.
"Just general things, like math, science, history and so on. Don't worry if you don't know things. We will browse through them together later on." Kaien explained with a smile on his face that didn't seem to leave his lips often, as far as Rain could see it. After that he also left the room to let the girl be alone in her studies.
Few hours later there was a knock on Rain's door, but there was no reply from the girl. After another knock there was still no answer so the person behind the door opened them, to reveal that it was Kaien. He looked around the room to see Rain asleep by the table, head resting on folded arms. A soft smile appeared on the man's lips as he saw the sight. He quietly went to the girl and shook her shoulder lightly, calling her name. After the first few attempts to wake to wake her up quietly, Kaien sighed and picket the girl up and lied her on her bed, after which he took off her shoes, pulled the covers from underneath her only to cover her with it. After that he left, closing the door quietly.
When Rain did wake up, it was already dusk. The room was still dim-lit, so she could see where everything was. She got out of the bed, put on her shoes and went to the table, turning on the table lamp. She saw on the chair and continued her studies. As she found out, she knew quite a lot of things, though history was completely foreign to her, so she put the history books to the side, to learn it later.
When Kaien returned to his office after the dusk ruckus, he saw Rain sitting on the coach, reading a book. Hearing the door open, Rain raised her eyes to meet her uncle's.
"Ah, you are awake. Would you like to eat something?" Kaien asked but was surprised that the girl shook her head. Then he noticed a pile of books next to the girl.
"You have already studied the books?" He asked in quite surprised tone.
"Before I fell asleep, I knew barely anything, but, after waking up, I found out that that only history is completely unknown to me. I don't know why it is like that." Rain explained, her voice strongly laced with confusion.
"Let's go to the dining room and look through them together over a cup of tea, unless you are too tired for it." Kaien offered. Rain didn't think long, sicne she recently woke up and hadn't spent her energy on some trivial things. While the kettle was boiling, there was a knock on the room's doorframe, causing both Kaien and Rain to look up in the direction to see Kaname standing there, arm still raised from the knock.
"Ara? Kaname-kun, you wanted something?" Kaien asked in his non-serious mode.
"Nothing much. Just wondering how Rain is doing." Kaname replied, ignoring the headmasters behavior, used to it after the many years of knowing him.
"It turns out Rain-chan is very smart! As expected of my lovable niece!" The chairman gushed, making Rain blush from embarrassment and mutter 'I'm not that smart…' which Kaname caught due to his sensitive hearing.
"Do you need any assistance?" He asked looking at Rain, while walking in the room with no worry in the world. His gaze was quite intense, which caused the girl to avert her eyes from him.
"I know no history." The female brunet admitted to him, though she blushed when Kaname smiled at her.
"Is there any history you remember, or shall be begin from the very beginning?" The pure-blood asked making the girl frown in attempt to find any traces of the world's history in her head. After a while she dropped her head in depression.
"None." She admitted in a dejected tone.
"It is alright. I can teach you in my spare time, if you like to." He offered with a smile on his lips that didn't reach his eyes.
"You don't have to do that. Uncle could teach me, or I could read it from the books on my own." Rain answered, looking down to her hands that were in her lap. What she didn't see, but the chairman did, was Kaname's smile turning sad and his mind drift to the past. To bring Kaname out of his reverie before Rain noticed it, Kaien faked a coughing fit, causing both pairs of eyes look at him.
"Sorry. Seems like I've caught a little cold." The man waved the concern away with a laugh.
"Then you should put some honey in your tea." Rain said, causing both males to look at her in surprise, but in a moment the chairman regained his senses.
"How nice! My niece cares for me!" Kaien went to hug his niece, but she quickly raised her hands in front of her saying: "I don't want to catch that cold."
Next to them Kaname chuckled at their antics of the two, albeit his heart bled from memories trying to resurface. Born Kaien and Rain looked that the pure-blood with surprised look on their faces.
"I haven't heard you laugh in some time." Kaien said fondly which caused Rain to look between the brunet and chairman with a question mark on her head. Noting Rain's expression, Kuran said to her: "Don't worry about it."
Rain slowly nodded her head, yet again wondering about the little information she found out about the male. To change the subject, Kaname took a history book turning it with face down, after which he took another book from the pile and put it on the first book , also face down. He did it till all of the books were in a pile and then turned the pile over.
"You need to read these books in this order. From stone age till nowadays. That way there won't be a mess in your head." Kaname said to the purple-eyed girl and she quietly thanked him.
"It is starting to get late. I better go and let you rest." Kaname turned to leave, quietly muttering something about Aido and punishing him.
"Who's Aido?" Rain asked before she could stop herself.
"He is a student of the Night class. You don't need to worry about him, he is my responsibility." He explained to the girl.
"Good night." The tall brunet said, leaving the room before any other questions appeared in the short girls mind. Rain only looked where the boy had disappeared. Kaien took note of it, hoping that the thing he feared of might happen. He didn't need his adopted niece to fall head over heels in love with Kaname. It would only cause problems and a broken heart.
"Would you also like some tea?" Kaien asked, bringing the girl back to Earth. She only turned her head in chairman's direction and nodded her head, taking the book that was on top of the pile. Kaien poured water the tealeaves after which he set the kettle down and put both cups on the table.
"To tell the truth, there is not much I can help you with history, however, I do suggest you take notes about things you find important. I'll look through them after that." Kaien said, sitting next to the girl. The next few hours Rain spent reading. Kaien had left her after finishing his cup of tea. When he returned to the kitchen, Rain was still reading.
"It is late. How about calling it a night and continue tomorrow?" He asked, walking closer to the girl. Rain looked up from her book and nodded her head, it being her favorite way of agreeing. She noted the page she was at, and put it on the table, using it as leverage to stand up.
Kaien took her to her room and then left her there. Rain went in only to find a rose on her bed along with her white wolf toy she had left somewhere. Picking the rose up, she saw a note stamped to the ribbon that was tied around the rose. Rain opened the note to see four words written in a neat calligraphy: "I'm watching over you."
She didn't know how to react to such note, whether to be scared of it or feel protected. In addition the wolf toy on her bed which wasn't there when she left. Deciding to tell about the note to her uncle tomorrow, she took off her shoes and jacket, along with the ribbon, and fell on the bed. Wearing only the uniform's button-up shirt and skirt, she pulled the covers from underneath her and covered herself with it. She closed her eyes, letting sleep take over her, all while clutching the white plush toy.
