Chapter 3 – Digging
"Did you notice what she was wearing?" Kenzi asked as they both clambered into Bo's car. Bo who was currently on cloud nine turned to face her friend.
"Oh my god Bo! Tune it down a bit. You're blinding me with your teeth," Kenzi teased pointing at Bo's toothy smile.
"Shut up! Anyway, what do you mean?" Bo asked as she started the car.
"The bracelet. I know Trick said that it's a necklace or whatever but Lauren was wearing a bracelet with the same symbol on it! I noticed it when she reached for the milk. Besides, you know me, I can't help but notice…shiny things," the younger woman said with a cheeky little smirk.
"How did I miss that?!"
"Oh, I don't know, maybe because you were too busy drooling over Lauren to realize what she was wearing?"
Bo rolled her eyes, but she was grateful that Kenzi had picked up on it. Kenzi was right. As soon as Lauren started talking, she couldn't help but listen intently. Bo hardly paid any attention to what she had been wearing. She internally kicked herself for being so caught up.
"So what are we going to do?" Kenzi asked.
"We are going to find answers. I think Dyson might be our best option. If Trick doesn't want to help me with this, then we'll find other ways."
"Do you think that's really the Mermory External whatchamacallit that Trick was talking about? I mean he did say it was a necklace…"
"Well, there's only one way to find out. I also feel like Trick knows more than what he's letting on. But we will need to ask him whether if it's possible for the necklace to be turned into a bracelet. You did see the symbol right? Argh, I still can't believe I didn't notice it."
"Yeah, well, that's why you have me," Kenzi replied.
Bo felt like she was finally beginning to get somewhere with this information. For such a long time she had been looking and now just the thought of being able to help Lauren get her memory back was adding fuel to the fire again. But she needed answers. She needed to find out whether Dyson knew of any Angels that were living in town. The only problem she faced was whether or not it was a good idea.
Trick had warned her against them for a reason, but what was it? She hated it when Trick kept things from her. However, she was determined to find out what made them so bad. She wanted to talk to an Angel. Bo needed a plan and she wasn't exactly sure where to start but an Angel sure sounded like a good place to start.
"What's the plan for today then Succubum?"
"We have to go see Dyson. He's known Trick for a long time, he's bound to know half of the people Trick does."
"Yes! Does that mean we might actually get to see a real Angel? I can't believe we're going to see an Angel! I wonder if he's got wings! Ooo with a nice wee six-pack and dressed only in a toga? Oh hells to the bells yes! Thank you Lauren for losing your memory!" The younger woman rejoiced.
"That is not funny Kenzi. Besides, Trick said they're not that kind of Angel remember?
"Hey, don't kill my buzz Succubus. Oh god I'm so excited! All I need to see now is a Mermaid and my life will be complete!"
Bo smiled at the excitement in her friend's voice. In some ways, she too was a little more than curious about what these 'Angels' would look like. She was still finding it rather difficult that in the Fae world an Angel could be dangerous. If there was one thing that Bo was certain about, it was the fact that she would do whatever it took to bring back her Lauren.
"Do you think this had anything to do with Taft?"
"It might. We have to find out for sure. I don't care what Dyson said about him, I still felt like something was wrong with him. Like he was hiding something. But first we have to find an Angel and then we'll see where we'll go from there."
"And you're sure it's Lauren?" Dyson asked looking up at Bo.
"Yep," she replied taking a seat opposite him.
"Oh great…the Succubus and her pet. Don't you two have anything better to do? Like babysitting a monkey or something?" Tamsin mumbled as she took a seat at her desk, throwing her feet up on it.
"Did someone say something?" Kenzi said glaring at the Valkyrie. For the last eight months, Kenzi and Tamsin still never quite saw eye-to-eye. They bickered constantly and were always insulting each other every chance they got.
"Look Bo, we already questioned Taft. He had an alibi. We even ran a thorough background check and he came up clean."
Bo remembered that day. She had been with them when they questioned him. The guy was relaxed and incredibly calm. Every question had an answer and not once did Taft stutter or stumble on a question. The one thing that really stood out about him was the little glint he seemed to have in his eye. Now that 'Karen' had mentioned working with him, Bo felt like this could finally be an opening to help with her search.
"But Lauren…or Karen, said she worked for Taft. The bastard was lying Dyson. Come on, you have to believe me," Bo pleaded.
"Okay…okay. Tamsin and I will question him again but I can't make any promises that we'll even find him. He said he was leaving town that same day we questioned him. You do realize that if it's really Lauren, the Fae elders will want to see her right? In their eyes, she betrayed the Light Fae and ran away. I really don't see this ending well," he replied.
"Then I'll protect her. I won't let them touch her."
She could almost see the gears turning in Dyson's head as he contemplated his next move.
"Only on one condition though," he said finally holding up his hand.
"If it turns out that this is another dead end, you can't come back here and ask me to help you out with finding her again Bo. There's only so much I can do without getting fired. Last time was close enough."
"Fine," she agreed. "Anyway, I need to know one more thing. Where can I find an Angel?"
"What do you want with an Angel?" He asked slowly.
"Trick says they can help restore a persons memory. Do you know any?"
"No…" Dyson replied looking away from Bo as he rifled through the papers on his desk pretending to look for something.
"Don't bullshit me Dyson," the Succubus said dangerously. Dyson stopped 'looking' and gave Bo an apprehensive look. He knew that look all to well being on the receiving end of it many times. Bo could tell he could see the hunger in her eyes. It was back. Bo wanted something and she knew she wasn't going to stop until she got it.
"I do know one. I can talk to him if you'd like. He owes me a favour anyway."
"NO!" Tamsin yelled. She got up from her desk and walked over hurriedly to where Bo was standing. "You shouldn't be messing with people you know nothing about baby Fae," she said glaring at Bo. The brunette wondered why everyone was so against meeting an Angel.
"Look, I don't want you getting yourself into a situation that's going to get ME into shit. Angel's are bad news and that's all you need to know. I suggest you go home with your little pet and have a pillow fight or whatever it is you do."
Bo glared back at Tamsin. She couldn't help but shake the feeling that Tamsin was hiding something by the way she said that. She turned to Dyson to find him avoiding eye contact with her.
"Dyson, you're taking us to this guy," she turned back to Tamsin. "You can come with us or not. Either way, we're going."
Walking over to Kenzi, the two of them went to their car. Bo didn't quite know what her plan was but at least talking to an Angel was the first step. Both of them watched as Dyson followed by an angry looking Tamsin jumped into Dyson's truck. As the Succubus stared at the Valkyrie, she couldn't help the feeling of distrust that passed over her. Tamsin was hiding something and she was going to find out.
As they pulled up to the run down building, Bo couldn't help but feel like someone was watching her. The hairs on the back of her neck were standing at attention and she felt herself tensing as she looked around the building. There was something off about the place.
"Wow. For an Angel, he could do with a bit of renovating," Kenzi mumbled. The Succubus raised an eyebrow at her.
"What? Even the Crack Shack looks better than this!" the smaller woman said defending herself. "Plus, is it just me or does this place give you the creeps?"
"Just a little," Bo agreed giving her a small nod of acknowledgment. As both cars parked up, Bo took another look around the area. There were some dark shaded areas and Bo swore she saw something or someone move back into that darkness. As Kenzi and Bo got out of the car, Dyson made his way quickly over to them.
"Stay close. Any sign of danger and we're out, got it? Don't look anyone in the eye," Dyson said quietly to them as his eyes scanned the area.
"Why?" Kenzi whispered back curiously.
"Head down, ask questions later. Lets get going."
With Kenzi, Tamsin and Bo in tow, the three of them followed Dyson to the side of the building and into an alleyway. As they reached the end of it, a door appeared out of nowhere.
"Holy shitballs!" Kenzi let out.
Dyson knocked on the door three times, paused and then knocked again twice. The door swung open and the four of them stepped through the door. Stepping through, Bo felt a sudden chill run right through her.
"Don't move," Dyson said, holding his arm out in front of Bo and Kenzi to stop them from going any further.
"No sudden movements until I say."
Looking to her left, Bo could see Tamsin standing there, arms folded and tapping her foot impatiently. The Succubus just glared at her and backed away from Dyson a little. Dyson at that moment seemed to pick up on something. She watched as he sniffed the air. Suddenly his eyes widened and his hands grabbed at his throat as he began to choke.
"Dyson!" All three women surrounded him. Tamsin got there in time to lay him down.
"D-death," he coughed.
"Don't say anything, just breathe," Tamsin ordered.
"N-no. I can s-smell death. The only th-thing capable of smelling this b-bad is a dead Angel. Out…take me out."
Bo and Tamsin hauled him up by the shoulders and dragged him out, followed by an awestruck Kenzi. They gave Dyson a few minutes to get his breath back and help him to his feet.
"From what I could smell, he's been dead a day or so. Angel's tend to give off this potent smell that only I can smell. It can actually be quite deadly. I don't know what it is but I can't go in with you guys."
"So you're saying that the only person I could've have to help is now dead?"
"Pretty much."
"Dyson, please tell me it was old age?" Bo asked doubtfully.
"No, he was still young, late two hundreds, give or take."
"Oh sure, because 200 is the next stepping stone in my long life," Kenzi quipped.
"You three have to go back inside. See what happened. That cold rush that you felt? It's the Angel's spirit. When they die, they stay stranded in what you might call 'Limbo' and Tamsin is the only person that can protect you. They can sense when a Valkyrie is near and won't do anything to harm those near one."
"Really D-Man?" Tamsin said glaring at him.
"Let's go," Bo said ignoring Tamsin. The blonde just huffed and made her way begrudgingly to the door with Bo and Kenzi right behind her.
"I didn't want to get involved with this shit Succubus. Now I'm involved. When you get in there, you listen to me. What I say goes, your life is gonna depend on it so trust me. Especially you human," she finished turning her head to look at Kenzi.
Bo just gave her a tight-lipped nod as they stepped through the door again. Once again, Bo felt the cold rush again before it quickly disappeared. All three of them made their way slowly up the stairs that was there and came to a halt at another door. Tamsin gave one good firm hard knock. Nothing happened.
"Well that was a bit of a downer," Kenzi said sarcastically.
"Shhh!" The Valkyrie replied holding up a hand to silence her. Kenzi just made faces at her and folded her arms across her chest. After another minute or two, the door finally gave way and opened for them.
"Stay close, I can't carry the both of you," Tamsin warned.
An audible gasp escaped from Kenzi as they were greeted with the horrid scene in front of them. On the floor, a man, whom Bo could only assume was the Angel, was laid out naked. He had his arms by his sides and his legs tied together. The body was covered in blood. In what Bo guessed was his own blood. Every part of his body mutilated, save for his face. Bo wondered if there was some kind of significance behind that. When Bo's eyes scanned the room, they stopped right on the message that was written across one of the walls in blood. It read:
"I know what you're doing. Stop looking."
"What the fuuuck?!" Kenzi said, her hand covering her mouth.
"Oh shit! This is not good. We have to get out of here!"
"What?" Bo asked.
"Just go. We can't be in here, let's GO dammit!"
Turning back around the three of them ran down the stairs and out into the alleyway again. Dyson looked over from where he was standing a few feet away. Bo and Kenzi followed Tamsin as they all made their way back to their cars.
"What happened?!" Dyson demanded.
"Her," the blonde said pointing at Bo. "Whatever happened to your guy in there is because of her! They know that she's digging Dyson and you know what happens when people dig."
Bo glared at her.
"What do you mean?!" Dyson asked again.
"He was in the Circle of Death Dyson! Jesus, he was covered in his own blood and mutilated. Legs tied, arms at his side. When we got in there, a lovely little painting was left for her. Whoever is doing this doesn't want to be found."
"The Circle of Death?"
"It's supposed to send a message. When people wanted to threaten someone that had done them wrong, they torture the person with several small cuts to the body. This is drawn out over an hour sometimes three. The cuts get deeper and longer until eventually they're left to bleed to death. The circle drawn in blood is supposed to be a sort of mark. For an Angel, they cut every part of the body but leave the face. Angel's are known for their faces because you will never find one that isn't good looking or beautiful. It's sort of like a mark. If you don't stop digging, eventually, everyone that you love will be doomed to suffer the same fate until they finally get to you."
Bo was shocked. There was suddenly a whirlwind of questions forming in her head. Why was it so important that she stop digging? Whoever was behind this didn't want her to bring Lauren back, but why? How did they even know that she was digging? Once again, Bo's thoughts went back to Taft. Is it possible that he could be behind all of this?
"Another thing you need the know, the only person that could've done this, was another Angel. You see you can't physically touch an Angel unless you are one or if you have access to their water. Whoever killed this one was definitely an Angel, not human."
The last thing Bo wanted was for anything to happen to any of her friends. This was starting to become more complicated than what she original thought.
"Now that we've had our history lesson can we go now? We have to call the cleaners. They can deal with this shit," Tamsin said impatiently as she began to climb back in the truck. Bo just nodded in agreement and motioned for Kenzi to follow her to the car. She needed to think about her next move. Pulling out her cell she began to search the net for the number she wanted. Finding it she dialed the number and waited. Kenzi just sat there looking at her with a slightly confused look on her face.
"Good Afternoon, Woodridge High School, Daisy speaking, how can I help you?"
"Umm…Hi, uh, my name is er Bo. Bo Dennis? I was wondering if it was possible to leave a message for a teacher there? Her names Lau—I mean, Karen Beattie? I think she teaches Science there. I'm a friend of hers and I forgot to get her number off of her earlier so I was wondering if it was possible for you to give her my number?"
"Oh, uh sure, of course. What was you name again love?"
"Bo. Bo Dennis."
