Hey guys, its Brandon. I've been working on my other fan fics before I decided to finish up the ones I've worked on previously. Sorry for the delay.
This chapter deals with Gabe and Jo in the aftermath of the hotel bombing, and they are ordered by the city council president to report to city hall, along with Blake, to brief the city council on what had happened.
If everybody's ready, please enjoy, and let me know what you think.
Chapter 2
Gabe Duncan sighed as a nurse wheeled him to the emergency room entrance at St. Luke's Hospital, and stood with him as he waited for a Denver Police officer to take him home.
It had been three hours since the Four Seasons Hotel in Downtown Denver was damaged in a bombing that took the life of his brother-in-law, Denver mayor Spencer Walsh, and seriously injured his sister, Colorado governor Teddy Duncan. Gabe remembered debris striking him, falling backwards, and slamming into a pillar. He also remembered waking up minutes later with a terrible headache. The paramedics arrived seconds later, determined that he had suffered a concussion, and brought him to St. Luke's where the doctors and nurses stated that the concussion was mild, and administered the proper treatment.
He looked around, and saw a Denver Police cruiser pull up to the entrance, and noticed a female officer driving. The officer opened the driver's door, and revealed herself.
Gabe quickly realized that the driver of the cruiser was Jo Keener.
Jo walked up to Gabe, who was getting out of the wheelchair, and smiled.
"Hey, Gabe. How's that hard head of yours, dumb-dumb?" Jo asked as she opened the front passenger door.
"The doctors said that the CT scan showed no neurological damage, but they said that the headache would be bothersome for at least 24 hours. How's Teddy?" Gabe asked as he walked to the car and sat in the front passenger seat.
"They took her to Swedish with a severe head injury. Chief Dabney's at Denver Health with massive head trauma, but they don't think she's going to make it, and Agent Blake is across the street at St. Joseph being treated for a concussion. She asked for me to pick her up when she's discharged." Jo said as she fastened Gabe's seat belt, and closed the door.
Gabe looked at Jo, and sighed. Fearing the worst possible outcome for the city, he then asked a critical question.
"Who's now in charge of the city since Mayor Walsh is gone?" Gabe asked as he heard his cell phone ring. Pulling out his phone, he looked at the screen, and saw a number he was unfamiliar with. He then swiped his finger across the screen, and turned on the speaker. He than began to speak.
"This is Gabe Duncan. May I ask who's calling?" Gabe ask as he looked at Jo with a bit of confusion on their faces.
The line was quiet for a minute, and then a woman with a heavy Minnesota accent came on the line.
"Is this Captain Gabriel Duncan or Captain Joanne Keener?" the woman asked.
Jo sighed, looked at the phone, and spoke into it.
"This is Captain Keener. May I ask who's calling." Jo asked.
The woman took a deep breath, and released it.
"This is Denver City Council President Debra Dooley. I had heard about Mayor Walsh's death at the Four Seasons a few hours ago. Shortly after the bombing, I notified the other members of the city council, and we have agreed to convene an emergency meeting of the council. I need the two of you to report to the Emergency Operations Center as soon as a possible to deliver a sitrep to the city council." Debbie Dooley said over the phone.
Gabe and Jo looked at each other, and sighed. Three hours after the bombing, they were tired, and were not prepared to deliver a situation report to the city council. They also knew that it was paramount to brief the city council as soon as possible on the situation developing downtown.
"Mrs. Dooley, can the council wait until morning? Captain Keener and I were eyewitnesses to the Four Seasons bombing, so our accounts of what happened will be foggy at best." Gabe said into the phone.
Dooley came back on the phone, and there was a tone of frustration in her voice.
"That is out of the question, Captain Duncan! I expect you and Captain Keener to report to the basement of city hall and march your hides into the Emergency Operations Center within the next hour! As president of the city council, I am next in line to become the mayor, and I don't want this city to be blown into smithereens so bad that we lose vital tourism dollars. Do I make myself clear?!" Debbie Dooley told the two officers.
"We're crystal, Mrs. Dooley." Jo said, accepting defeat.
"By the way, Lieutenant Governor Deleseur has asked me to rectify this situation as soon as possible, and I understand that the BAU is already en route to the city, am I correct?"
"Yes, ma'am. An SSA Alex Blake is being treated at St. Joseph right now for a concussion, so once she is discharged, we will be right there." Gabe said.
"Since Chief Dabney is clinging to life after the bombing, and my inability to get a hold of any of the other deputy chiefs, I have no choice but to appoint the two of you acting chiefs of police, considering that there are others higher up the chain of command. However, since you two are eyewitnesses to the hotel bombing, I think we can bypass the chain of command for once. When Ms. Blake is discharged, please report to city hall. We have a long night ahead of us, and we need the BAU's input if we want to find the bastard bombing our beloved city." Dooley said as the line went dead.
Gabe and Jo looked at each other, and sighed in unison. Gabe pocketed the phone, and looked at Jo as she began speaking.
"I take it that we must do what she says. Three hours earlier, I was the commander of the Tactical Response Team, and now I'm appointed by the president of the Denver City Council as an acting chief of police. I did not intend to go that far up the chain of command in such a short period." Jo said as she started up the police cruiser.
"You heard Ms. Dooley. Lieutenant Governor Deleseur wants this rectified quickly. It will be our heads if we fail to find the perp responsible." Gabe said.
"Then we'll head across the street to check on Agent Blake, then proceed to city hall to brief council, and allow ATF and Homeland to examine the evidence." Jo said as she placed the cruiser in drive, and pulled out of the ER entrance.
Thirty minutes later, Blake was wheeled out of the ER at St. Joseph, and got in the backseat of the cruiser. Gabe and Jo looked at the FBI profiler, and asked how she was after the bombing.
"I've got a bit of a headache, but otherwise, I'm fine. What's the latest on the bombings?" Blake quipped.
"We've been summoned to city hall by Debra Dooley, the president of the Denver City Council, to brief council on the events, and consult with ATF, Homeland, state, and local agencies. The state's lieutenant governor might be there, so please behave." Gabe said.
"It's going to be a very long night ahead of us. Be sure to have some caffeine handy." Jo said.
"My team is already en route, so they'll notify us when they're thirty minutes out." Blake said.
Jo then placed the cruiser in drive, and pulled out of the St. Joseph ER entrance, and headed towards Denver City Hall, where they would notify the city council of the events that unfolded, and what needed to be done to ensure that Denver would be safe.
That's chapter 2. Please rate and review. I'm working on chapter 3 as we speak.
