This was designed to be a happy-ever-after type story.
Vincent and Aeris would travel far to find the individual members of the original crew. In the meantime, Jenova would return from the dust to make revenge threats against the soul-stream itself. Slowly, Vincent would find himself falling in love, but battling with his inner monster to allow himself to deserve it. He never wants to become a monster again, and so vows to never use his limit break - it killed him to see the look on Aeris's face when he did it the first time. At the final battle he is forced to use his limit break, but Aeris, instead of flinching, reaches out to him and confesses her feelings of affection for him. Together, they all face Jenova and destroy her, for good this time.
