"You look…" Spock's voice caught in his throat.
"Spectacularly sexy?" croaked Kirk, trying to smile but the bruising to his face didn't let him do more than grimace.
"Hardly," replied Spock teasingly, barely managing to conceal his concern for his lover. He went to step closer, moving to touch Kirk but he froze, suddenly uncertain of his welcome. Kirk gazed at him then looked away, deflating slightly and that ripped at Spock's heart. Without hesitation he reached out, his fingers curling tenderly around Kirk's broke hand.
"I thought you might like this," he murmured, forcing his voice to stay firm.
Kirk gasped as he saw the battered book in Spock's other hand.
"My bo...you…"
"You said it always cheered you up. I thought it a logical choice when searching for something which would occupy us while we wait for your body to mend."
Kirk tightened his grip as much as he could in a silent thank. Sinking into the seat beside the bio-bed Spock started to read. His voice washing over Kirk as their fingers slid closer together, tightening the bond between them, both of them taking much needed comfort from the simplest yet most intimate of touches possible.
