Sunday proved uneventful for GoGo Tomago, as she avoided the university. She really didn't want to have to face the prospect of beginning a completely new project, as there was no way in hell that she could afford to get her bike back. Starting a new project always prompted so many questions from nosy students and faculty, and honestly? GoGo was pretty sure she was going to slap the first person who asked her where her bike was.
Monday, however, GoGo knew it was time to face the music. She rode her regular, non-motorized bicycle all the way to the lab. It took her three times as long and she rode up sweaty and gross, which wasn't helping her mood any. She locked up her bike and stomped into the lab, a frown plastered across her face.
GoGo pushed the lab door open hard and froze in her tracks. Her mouth hung open as she stared at her workstation. Her bike was on its rack, right where it belonged. GoGo rushed over and walked in a circle around it, eyeing the bicycle up and down like at any minute, it might disappear in a puff of smoke. She reached out and ran her hand over the back wheel and gave it a push, watching the spin. There was no wobble in the wheel. It was truly like the bike had never left the lab.
GoGo spun on her heel and scanned the lab, her brow furrowed. Her eyes snapped to the university's resident laser expert, who was currently slumped over his desk. Her jaw stiffened and she stormed across the lab as calmly as she could manage. She slammed her hand down on his desk. "HEY!"
Wasabi shot up, a piece of paper stuck to the side of his mouth. "Huh?" His head spun around to look at GoGo as he batted the paper off his face. "Wha—what's going on?"
GoGo glared at him, and he shrank away from her slightly. "Care to explain that?" she quipped, sharply gesturing at her bike.
Wasabi had the good grace to look a little sheepish and he forced a smile. "What, your bike? It looks like it's coming along great."
"Don't play stupid," GoGo snapped. "How'd you get my bike?"
Wasabi let his mouth hang open for a minute. "Uhhhh…"
GoGo let out a sharp breath and rested a hand over her eyes. "How did you even know where it was?"
Wasabi grimaced. "I found the ticket you threw away. It was with the number for the impound lot, and I just thought…"
GoGo set her face and glowered over Wasabi. He looked uncomfortable and squirmed in his seat. She sighed and broke her stare. "Come on," she muttered.
"What?"
"Come on," GoGo repeated, a little more forcefully, and strode out of the lab. Wasabi trailed behind her looking more than a little lost.
GoGo left the building and just kept walking. She finally stopped in front of the coffee cart that sat outside of the university library. She looked at Wasabi expectantly. "Well?"
"Well, what?"
"What would you like to drink?" GoGo huffed.
"Umm…" Wasabi was more than a little intimidated by GoGo normally, so this new temperamental version of her had silenced any rising questions. "A black coffee with a shot of hazelnut would be great."
GoGo walked to the vendor and returned holding two large to-go cups and a brown paper bag. She handed Wasabi one of the cups and walked to one of the tables scattered around.
Wasabi sat down at the chair across from her, sipping his coffee.
"Thank you."
It was so short and curt, Wasabi could've sworn he had imagined it. He met the dark brown eyes staring him down. She continued, "Thank you for getting my bike back." She hesitated. "I can't—I can't pay you back right away, I need some time to—"
"Don't worry about it," Wasabi cut in with a smile. "It's not a big thing."
GoGo's eyes narrowed. "Yes, it is, and I will pay you back."
"Okay," Wasabi said easily. "Just don't stress about it."
GoGo handed him a bearclaw pastry out of the back and bit into a second one, still eyeing him warily.
Wasabi cleared his throat. "So how did you get to the lab today, if you didn't have your bike?"
"I rode my regular bike." Wasabi quirked an eyebrow. "The kind with pedals?"
"Oh!" Wasabi paused. "I've got an appointment later today, but do you want me to pick you up on my way to the lab tomorrow?" GoGo blinked. "I mean, your house is sort of on the way—I mean, if where I dropped you off is where you live, then it's only a minute or two off the main road!"
GoGo stared at him silently for a moment more. Wasabi scratched his head and sipped his coffee, avoiding her gaze. He considered himself a pretty good people person, so it made him uneasy when he couldn't read GoGo's expressions.
"Fine." Another pause. "Thanks."
Wasabi smiled. "Alright! I'll pick you up at 8:00 tomorrow."
Honey Lemon loved, loved, LOVED days like today. The sun was shining down on her gloriously. It just filled her all the way up with joyous energy. She just felt as if she could dance across the quad. To those watching her, she did sort of dance, moving this way and that, reaching out to touch the flowers reaching up from the beds, turning this way and that to take the day in completely. After stopping to toss a coin into the fountain in front of the library, she turned around and was met with a sight that gave her pause. It was her friends GoGo Tomago and Wasabi sitting at one of the adorable little tables littered around the quaint coffee cart ever-present on campus. They appeared to be talking easily, and she watched as Wasabi flashed GoGo a big grin.
"Huh," she hummed to herself. "I didn't think those two usually hung out by themselves."
The pair looked so comfortable, so intimate, that Honey couldn't bring herself to interrupt, so she continued on her way, eyeing the couple over her shoulder before shrugging off the entire affair and continuing on with her wonderful day.
