Mew's Legacy
Chapter Two
'Friendship... A wonderful thing...'
Via and I run about inside my home, chasing each other in a violent game of tag. The pitter-patter of rain sounds from the shingles on the roof. I tag the cyndaquil and start to flee, laughing all the while. Pieces of furniture lay scattered about the house, though nothing is broken. Mama would kill me if that were the case – well, give me a stern talking to, but it's much the same. Via laughs, chasing me into my room.
She freezes at the sight as I stand on my bed. The room is fairly large for a one-pokemon bedroom, but it's no larger than any other in the house. What she's truly in awe over, I've no idea, but I suspect that the various human objects scattered about the desks and walls have much to do with it. She walks over to one object, picking it up.
"What is this, Daniel?"
I take it from her, pressing a button on the top. A bright flash of light fills the room, and a piece of parchment rolls from the device. I show her the parchment, and she laughs in delight.
"This is a camera. Humans used these to capture memories so that they wouldn't forget anything," I explain.
"Wow," she says. "That's amazing."
I take the picture from her, nodding. "Humans were amazing creatures. They've left behind so many amazing things; some day, I hope to actually meet one," I say, putting the picture on the top of a stack of others.
"Humans are extinct, though," she says.
"Yeah…"
Silence fills the room momentarily before she remembers our game. She tackles me to the bed, pinning me there.
"Ha! I win!"
"Via, let me up!" I yell, struggling against the triumphant cyndaquil. "This isn't funny!"
"Yes, it is," she says, laughing. She leans in close. "Admit it, I'm awesome."
I open my mouth to tell her that I'll never admit that, but I'm interrupted by the front door slamming open. Via scrambles off me onto the floor, and I follow, rushing into the hall.
"Anna! Anna, come quick!" yells a feminine voice. It's melodic, beautiful, but frantic.
We rush into the living area to find a distraught pokemon crying and yelling for my mother. Her fur is a stunning shade of pink, and she has a ruby embedded in her forehead. Her long, large ears flick in tandem with her tail, which splits at the end. She turns to me, tears in her eyes.
"Daniel, where's your mother?" she asks.
"Mama's out right now. I think she went to Via's house," I respond.
"Mama," cries another voice. "When will Vera come home?"
"Soon, love," says the pink pokemon. "Daniel, this is my daughter, Vee. Do you think you two could stay here with her for a little bit? I need to go get the others…"
Papa walks into the room from the kitchen. "Don't worry, Asuna. I'll watch the kids. You go get Redpelt and Anna."
The espeon nods. "Thanks, Shock. My mate should be here shortly with Aeon and Ferron. I apologize for everything in advance, but it can't be helped."
Papa gives Asuna a funny look before nodding. "It's quite alright. Go. Get the others. The kids will be fine."
Asuna thanks him and runs out of the house into the rain. The raichu turns to us.
"Daniel, why don't you take Via and Vee to the den? Get the fire going, would you? I've a feeling we'll all be needing it soon," Papa says sadly.
'Ask for help and you will receive. That's the rescue team creed.'
The three of us curl up by the fire, each wrapped in a blanket. Vee sits closest to the fire, attempting to dry her fur. I exchange a look with Via.
"What happened?" I ask the eevee.
"Dunno. Vera's gone," she says.
"Vera?" Via asks.
"My twin sister. I'm cold," Vee says, shivering. She curls up more in her blanket.
"What happened?" I ask again.
"I dunno! We were playing, and suddenly something took her away! I just want her to come home," Vee weeps.
The door to the house opens and we hear Papa greeting Aeon and the others. Shortly thereafter, they come into the den, sitting by the fire. Via scoots closer to me as her enemy, Ferron the honedge, glares at her.
"Ferron, play nice."
The honedge grumbles and stops glaring.
"Now then," says Papa, "we need to wait for Anna."
"No need," she responds from the doorway, "we're here."
She walks into the room and sits beside Papa. Shortly thereafter, a giant, red-furred pokemon follows, sitting next to her and in front of the doorway. The pokemon grunts, stands, and moves aside to let Asuna into the room. Too many pokemon!
"Papa!" Via cries, rushing the giant pokemon.
It bellows in laughter, picking her up and swinging her around. "Hey, darling! Having fun with Daniel?"
She laughs and nods. "Yeah! He showed me this great thing called a camaro!"
"Camera," I correct. "Not a camaro."
"That's fun," her father says. He sets her on the floor and turns his attention to Asuna. "Now then, what's this about?"
The espeon opens her mouth to start speaking, but Mama interrupts her. "Daniel, take the others into your room. Why don't you show the other kids your favorite toy?"
"Okay! Come on, guys!" I yell, causing most of the adults to wince. "You'll love this!"
"Honedge, the Sword Pokemon. Honedge are born when departed spirits inhabit a sword. Apparently, they use their hilt to suck the life force from people and use the energy as food."
"See!" I yell, still pointing the red device at Ferron. "Isn't it cool?"
The honedge rolls his eye. "Not really, cause that's not true. We's hatched just the same as any other pokemon, and we don't mean to drain the life force from others. In fact, we don't even drain life force. It's just simple energy, and it's just a side effect. Being 'round us will just make you more tired than normal."
"Well, I assume our ancestors wanted to keep a lot of information away from the humans," I say. "You can't expect human information to be perfect."
"Ooh, do me!" Via yells after a slight pause. "What did humans think about cyndaquil?"
I point the device at her, and it beeps once before emitting a red light. "Cyndaquil, the Fire Mouse Pokemon. Cyndaquil tend to be really timid in nature. When frightened, the flames on their backs flare wildly and they curl into a ball."
"Hey!" she exclaims. "That's not true!"
Ferron bursts into laughter. "Ha, it kinda is. Scaredy meowth."
Tears start forming in Via's eyes. "You meanie!"
"Stop it, you guys!" Vee says abruptly. "Vera's gone and you're all just joking around!"
Silence. "Whatever..."
"Well, it's okay, cause I forgive you anyways," she says.
"So what do we do now?" Via asks after calming down.
I grin, holding the device up again. "This thing is more than just a pokedex. Watch this."
After tinkering with the device again, I set it on the ground. It beeps a couple of times and emits a red light into the air, forming the figures of the adults in the room next to us. Collective gasps from the others fill the room.
"Alright," I say. "It's time to figure out what they're talking about."
"So do we know why they took Vera?" Mama's figure asks.
Asuna shakes her head. "No. All we really know is that she's been taken."
"Do we even know who took her?" Papa asks.
"No," says a black-furred vulpine. "We don't."
"So we know nothing about her disappearance?" roars Via's papa. "This is useless! We should be out there right now looking for her!"
"But we don't know where to look," Asuna responds.
"If I may, perhaps we do. Nocturn, what was Vera doing when she was taken?" Aeon asks.
The room is silent for a moment before the black-furred and red-ringed vulpine responds. "Playing with Vee in the woods."
"And this was only recent? Within the last hour?"
Nocturn nods. "Just about an hour ago."
Aeon floats around the room, seemingly deep in thought. "Did Vee see who took Vera?"
"Yeah! It was a strange green thing with lots of colors!" Vee exclaims.
"Probably an elgyem," I say. "They're rare, but they fit that description."
"From her description," Asuna says, "We think it's a baltoy or a claydol."
"So it probably took her into the Crevice Caverns."
"Then what are we waiting for?" Nocturn yells. "Let's go!"
I turn the device off. "Vee, was it alone? Did it say anything to you?"
"N-no. It mainly just made a bunch of beeping noises. Like this!" The eevee tries mimicking the noises she heard.
"How exact was that?" Ferron questions intently.
"Uh… I dunno."
"If that was exact, then Vera's still in the forest! The adults are wrong! They'll never make it to her in time," the honedge says. "We don't have much time. Let's go."
"Wait, not that I'm arguing, but why do you care?" I ask. "Since when are you nice?"
"None of your business," he responds bluntly. "Do you want to save Vera or not?"
"Of course I do!" we yell in tandem.
"I hope you aren't thinking of going off on your own," Papa says without warning.
Oh no. When did Papa get here? "Umm…"
"Look. I know you guys want to help, but this is adult stuff. You guys really shouldn't get involved. We'd never forgive ourselves if we let you get hurt. Now, I'm going to go take a nap. You guys take care of yourselves for a little while," Papa says. "Got it?"
I smile and nod when he winks at me. "Alright. We'll take good care of ourselves. We're gonna go play in the forest."
"Don't forget your bag," he says. "You know, the one with all your toys in it."
"Right. Love you, Papa!"
"Love you too, Daniel. Have fun, and be careful!"
'And they explored off into the unknown...'
