Chapter Three

Katrina POV

I headed into

my room to see Kendall sitting on my bed.

"Did you get your essay finished?" I shook my head.

"I've been a little distracted." I look through my bag onto the chair next to my bed and flopped on my bed.

"My brother is going to see about negotiating the terms. I agree with what you said." I got off the bed and looked out of the window.

"It doesn't matter about negotiating about the contract. There's no getting out of it, nothing I want is going to change the fact that I have to leave here and marry a guy I don't know or love." I know it was wrong to take it out on Kendall, but he was the only person I seemed to be seeing.

"I know it's hard but we'll get through this." He went to rub my arm, but I flinched away from him.

"It's not as hard for you. We are moving to your home! Were all your friends and family live. I don't get to graduate college or be here to celebrate Christmas with my family. Don't tell me we'll get through this!" I took a breath, feeling even worse than I did when I started my rant. "I think lunch will be ready soon." I left him there and headed down the stairs.

My mum was sitting at the dinner table with bridal magazines.

"Oh good. I was wondering if you had thought about what you're going to wear to your engagement party tonight?" My face paled. "I was thinking about that nice little lilac dress we saw in town last week. I'm going into town so I'll pick it up for you." Before I could argue with her, the rest of the family came down for lunch. The parents sat chatting away whilst I ate in silence. Mum grabbed my attention when I was cleaning the dishes.

"Cathy and I are going into town to get supplies for tonight. Why don't you and Kendall spend the afternoon together?" I shook my head and went to leave the room but my mum grabbed me.

"Look I know you hate this but this is what is happening. Stop being a child and get over it!" She hissed and left the house. I sighed and headed up to my room and started throwing things in boxes. Kendall ran into the room after hearing all the crashing.

"What are you doing?" Kendall asked. I kept throwing all my belongings into boxes.

"I'm packing all my things like a good obedient wife does." Kendall again tried to grab my hands but I jumped away again.

"You don't have to do this now. We have time."

"How much?" He rubbed his face in his hands.

"Till the end of the week." He mumbled out. I dropped the books that were in my hand.

"In three days?" He nodded. I could feel my eyes water and my heart drop to the pit of my stomach. I had three days to pack up my entire life. "I do have to do this now then."

The rest of the afternoon was spent packing, I tried to ignore Kendall, but he was making a lot of effort. He would make little observations with me sometimes answering him. Kendall was helping me get books from the top shelf on my bookcase. He stopped on one particular book.

"Fahrenheit 451. I love this book." I took the book from him and put it in the box.

"I've never actually gotten around to reading it."

"You don't know what you're missing." He joked. I smiled up at him.

"I don't think I want to read about a world where there are no books. That sounds like hell."

We heard the door opening downstairs and a rabble of voices. We taped up the rest of the boxes and headed down the stairs. We got half way down when Naomi popped up at the bottom.

"I have your dress for tonight. Kendall go get changed too. People have already started arriving so let's go put our fake smiles on." I was pushed up the stairs.

"Naomi, what do you think of all this?" I asked as she started on my hair.

"I think you're really brave. The fact that you are moving halfway across the world with a man you don't know proves it."

"I can't believe the parents are moving so quickly on this. I feel like a child and I have no say what so ever." Naomi smirked at me.

"Let's show them you do have a say."

Half an hour later I was ready. Kendall was down the stairs with my brother already and it was time for us to go down. As I made my way into the room, Naomi whispered in my ear.

"Remember and smile, you are supposed to be in love." She headed off to my brother. My mum came over and I could see she was trying not to explode infront off everyone.

"What on earth are you wearing! You look like a common party girl" I smiled down at my dress. It was not the one that she had picked out. It was completely different. This dress was a black lace bodycon dress instead of the purple skater dress she had picked out.

"I bought it for her." I heard from behind me. Kendall came next to me and smiled at my mum. "I saw it yesterday and thought she would look beautiful in it, and she does." He looked down at me causing me to blush. My mum scoffed and headed back to where my aunt was standing, looking at me in shock.

"Thanks, you didn't have to take the blame for this." He smiled and handed me a glass. "Don't worry, its non alcoholic. Stephen said it was your favourite." I took the glass and sipped the contents inside it. "So what story has my mother told everyone here?"

"Apparently we met a few years ago when your family went to New York and we've been secretly dating each other since. Then I decided that it was time to make you a Schmidt instead of a Wallace. We are so in love and can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together."

"Yeah and ride off into the sunset on a unicorn." I mutter causing him to laugh. People started coming up to us to congratulate us. We both stood there, fake smiles shining bright.

The house was slowly filling up with friends and family. I was chatting to my brother in the corner, when I heard a glass being tapped.

"Oh no." I muttered to Stephen, who looked as panic stricken as I was. I spotted Kendall on the opposite side of the room, mirroring my horror. He made his way over to me as mum started talking.

"Today we celebrate the coming together of two families. At the end of the week our little Katrina will be starting her new life with her soul mate."

"She is really laying this on thick." I muttered to my brother, who nodded his head in agreement. Everyone raised their glasses to the two of us, making me feel more cornered and scared than I had since I found out my fate.
