Interested primarily in music and Philosophy he was a brilliant flute player and had a deep love for philosophy he wasn't truly interested in the arts of war during his youth, at the age of 18 Frederick unsuccessfully attempted to flee from his authoritarian father with childhood friend Hans Hermann von Katte their destination was Britain and were imprisoned in Küstrin he was forced to watch the execution of his friend after they were captured and thrown into prison. and to watch the execution Frederick was held up by two servants so he could look out the window in his cell and watched as Hans was executed it is also said that Frederick quickly fainted after witnessing the horrific event and suffered hallucination for two days afterwards.

It is also speculated that Katte was Frederick's lover.
